xONEx taxes

Hi all

I've just booked with QF a DONE4 for myself and an identical LONE4 for PartnerJohnM's daughter.

It's the first time I've done such a double and this may be of interest to people: taxes were $1175.49 for the DONE4 and $748.63 for the LONE4.

What is of interest to me is: can anyone explain the basis of the near 60% extra on the D?

Booked through Qantas travel.

Routing is: PER-SYD-LAX-LAS-DFW-SLC-DFW-SFO-JFK-LHR-MAD-CMN-MAD-LHR(transit)-PEK-HKG-PER. Stopovers everywhere except the LHR transit as marked.

I seem to remember some comment about the transit through LHR being an extra cost - but why the D:L difference?

Sorry, meant to mention that what appears to be the breakdown is a list of incomprehensible (to me) codes at the end of the E-ticket just under the pricing but all the numbers next to letters are larger on the DONE4.

Presumably you are flying from MAD to LHR and then straight on to PEK.

This would be often written as -MAD-xLHR-PEK-

Transit through any UK airport i.e. basically arrive on one flight and depart on another, does not attract the same tax as if you landed in the UK, stayed and then flew out again. Depending on the distance you are travelling and the class of travel, then you can be hit quite a lot.

Here's another interesting take on xONEx taxes:

I had built on the OneWorld RTW planning tool an LONE4 identical to the one booked through Q Travel and had tracked it for the last six months.

Here's today's breakdown of the two fares:

Q Travel: $4653.63 (Fare: $3905, taxes: $748.63).

OneWorld: $5039.89 (Fare: $3904, taxes: $1135.89 - only $40 shy of my DONE4 taxes). What gives?!:shock: Makes the $60 QF agent-assisted booking fee well worthwhile.

I built the same itinerary as a DONE4 on the OW tool but was unable to do the current price comparison as one of the sectors showed no D class about two months ago so dummy pricing ceased to be possible. Guess which sector was the first to lose a D seat?: PER-SYD!

Hate to think what the OW tool would have slugged me for taxes on the DONE4!:mrgreen:

The charging of Fuel fines relates to the 'ticketing' carrier. With the oneworld tool this is generally the first "marketing" carrier. (i.e. That of the flight number.) Some ailines charge more than others. e.g. LAN do not charge these at all.

If you have used the oneworld online tool have you gone to the pricing stage? That brings up lists of the taxes/levies/charges (

). Check that APD is not being charged when it shouldn't be. I have had that issue before.

APD is UK "Air Passenger Duty" - it's code is [-]UK[/-] GB.

It is Air Passenger Duty tax collected on departure from GB airports at time of sale or voluntary rebooking.

There is a breakdown provided.

After clicking (Proceed) and being "moved to the booking engine", you can get the

APD shows as "UK Air Passenger Duty".

Thanks, Serfty. Most interesting. Still need to get onto my dummy LONE4 booking on the OW tool and break that out.

In your re-listing of the taxes, the LONE4 & DONE4 was transposed.

I still can't figure how it equates to the tax charged. Are the individual coded taxes in real money? If so, are they country-specific currency? Here's the totals of the numeric values in the lists:

DONE4: 428.79 (Tax charged was $A1175.69)

LONE4: 336.33 (Tax charged was $A748.63)
