The first Xiamen Airlines flight into SYD from Fuzhou (FOC) arrived about half an hour early this morning (Monday 30 November 2015) at around 1000, no doubt with water cannons blasting.

This airline is so new to SYD that the Sydney Airport website does not have its name loaded into the 'flight status' website section.

I am perplexed by the multitude of 'X airline delays/cancellations' threads. What purpose do they serve?

I have asked exactly the same question before as to why we need a new thread for every single airliner operating to and from Australia.

Danger, reading anything on the Internet is optional.

Smit0847, if I recall a moderator previously gave you a succinct reply to that effect.

The cancellation and delay threads are a guide to how particular airlines operate. For instance many passengers contemplating a trip between MEL and SYD or the east coast and PER may not otherwise know of JQ's relatively high cancellation rates on some of these sectors. The www.nswtrainlink.info XPT train can be more reliable than JQ is late at night sometimes, with JQ passengers unable to travel until the next day.

Others may be unaware of the problems that QF (Qantaslink to be precise) has had in 2015 with its contracted B717s that operate between MEL and HBA. The QF thread shows how delays can on occasion compound through the day. Some may conclude that VA is on balance more reliable on this return sector down to and back from Tassie.

Still more travellers may not know that when ash is evident from that volcano erupting not far from DPS, there is a far greater chance of getting to that Indonesian island if one books on GA rather than on JQ or VA, while XT (with its very limited fleet) is also more likely to give the green light to flights when VA and JQ say 'no' or turn back flights that have almost reached DPS.

Another group of travellers may not know in advance how limited the turnaround time in MEL is between QF94 and QF93 back to LAX, or QF10 and QF9 back to DXB and LHR, or that at some times of the year there can be sandstorms that delay flights in DXB, a problem that when I last checked was not evident in HKG, ICN or SIN as major competing airports. Travellers may determine that it is preferable to book on an airline like SQ through southeast Asia to LHR and the rest of Europe.

Still more may not know that due to problems in mainland Chinese airspace (military alleged commandering of it or shutdowns at major Chinese airports), CX can have problems departing from HKG on time due to many connecting passengers being delayed.

Reports of storms tend to indicate that VA is more likely to divert aircraft than QF. That may be a coincidence, or just plain bad luck of aircraft being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or there may be another explanation - whatever, it can be useful for travellers to know that.

Some AFFers may conclude from the relative paucity of contributions to the cancellation and delay threads that airlines such as BI, JL, KE and OZ have pretty good punctuality. While they also do not have huge numbers of flights, concluding the aforesaid about their timekeeping would be accurate - this may lead to some AFFers deciding to book on one of these relative unknowns out of Oz for Europe, for instance, and they may well have a most satisfactory trip thanks (at least in part) to this newfound information.

More than 500 AFFers find the QF delays and cancellations thread useful (or at least they 'like' it, albeit sometimes through gritted teeth). Many others 'like' particular other airline delay and cancellation threads.

Not everyone is going to like each topic on a forum like AFF; I don't, but choose not to read those that hold no interest. You are at liberty to do the same.

Well done Melburnian - I certainly don't read or follow all these threads very closely but I occasionally have a quick look through most - well done on taking the time and effort for posting this info - keep up the good work.

I think they'd be a bit easier to follow if the language was adjusted a little. Some of the stuff that comes out has forced me to cough up my Shiraz in the past.

N860CR, if you would like to send me a PM upbraiding me and instructing how you would like the language to alter, please do so.

I have visions of an 80 year old gent bringing up his Shiraz and almost having a coronary. We cannot have that, especially if it occurs in an airline lounge.

I have no issue with you posting delay info but they should all be in the one thread. Why do we make all EF requests be in the one thread when we could have a new thread for every airline?

smit0847, that was the moderators' decision. If you woud like separate EF threads for each airline, 'speak to' the moderators.

Well I for one like them in separate threads because I can then select whichever thread might be relevant rather than reading multiple posts with (at that time) irrelevant info on flights I have no interest in.
Never had any issues with language but YMMV.

Im just pointing out im not the only one who thinks these should all be in the one thread
And others prefer separate threads - personally I am really interested in Xiamen's performance - they have some really cheap fares right now - am even considering trying them.

As a point of comparison, Cruiser Elite (great name!), Sichuan Airlines started rather rockily with a lot of late running into and out of MEL but has settled down to become more reliable, punctuality wise.

B788 B-2763, the 1200 SYD to XMN on Sunday 13 December 2015 took off at 1251, about 25 minutes late. It should arrive at around 1800 and still therefore be considered 'on time.'

This time the aircraft is B-2763 not '2762' but the result is the same: late running. On Sunday 14 February MF801 will be about 70 minutes late ex XMN when it arrives in SYD at around 1140. The 1200 scheduled return flight will be late.

MF8936 on Saturday 20 February took off from SYD at 1247 and is expected to be at the XMN gate at roughly 1853 hours this evening, 48 minutes late. The craft is B788 B-2761.

The Monday 22 February arrival of MF807 ex XMN into SYD, timetabled in at 1030, will be at about 1132 as B788 B-2760 did not take off until 2308 on Sunday night despite a pushback time of 2210 hours.

The return flight, MF808 has a departure time of 1200 but today it was airborne at 1312, meaning a likely XMN arrival of 1908, 48 minutes late. That is not much time picked up (only 14 minutes) since the late morning arrival of MF807.
