Worlds Safest Airlines for 2012

Where is Garuda on the list? I need to go to Jakarta and is considering them.

Its interesting how an airline that has never lost a passenger jet can be below airlines that have, they say its based on the past 30 years preformance, if thats the case surely QF scores much higher than many above it. Personally I think Qantas and Virgin Australia along wth Singapore Airlines are the safest. Didn't Air New Zealand fly a plane into the side of an Antarctica Mountain some time in the past 30 years.

Mount Erebus. It was a DC-10

Forget hull losses.

I bet countless more long haul pax have gone stark raving mad from AY's IFE than anyone using QF ever has...

I was very impressed with AY - flown them for the first time recently SIN - HEL - VIE in J. Agreed the IFE is poor but for the price difference vs QF, I could buy hundreds of movies on DVD!

I cannot eat dairy products. In QF, there is no such choice. At CX, I will get a piece of dry chicken. I was so pleasantly impressed when the FA on AY brought me the selection of breads with meal and explained to me how much dairy contents of each type of bread. If they apply the same attention to details in their mechanics, they will certainly be the safest airline in the world. I am happy to fly them again.

So long as you don't mind an SQ captain destroying his 744 by attempting to take off from a runway that was closed and littered with construction gear ...... (Taiwan)

No airline with a complete hull loss should be on that list at all (with rare exceptions - thinking of AA amd UA on 9/11 as obvious exceptions to this rule).

Meaningless report really IMHO.
agrre quite meaingless. What about Swiss air's crrash off the coast of North America? Swiss is still effectively Swiss air (+ Cross air) but because of the name change the crash, which could have been avoided, is not registered

Meaningless report really IMHO.

Did you read the rest of the report? (I assume it's in German, and I assume there's a full report with, e.g. methodology)

I'd hope that in the full report they explain some of the limitations of the results, as you should, as well as the methodology behind calculating their "safety rating", which I believe is indicative and not strictly numerical (e.g. an airline which has a rating of 0.001 is not twice as safe as one with 0.002, all you can say is that they are rated "safer").

Naturally media companies dispense with such disciplined actions and apportion only the results without bothering for the context, which draws some unrealistic or embellished conclusions. This misleads people who don't know better and so on.

So, it may not be a meaningless set of results, but it depends on how the results got there and how they were determined... then ultimately, how they will be used. Based on the OP information only, we know nothing of the sort.

A bit off topic but AY's J has several deficiencies such as no showers in HEL if flying to a Schengen destination (not great after O/N flight from SIN); no amenity kit & the moisturier etc that is available on request (but no one tells you it is available) is cheap and nasty

I believe you could have used the international terminal lounge which has good shower facilities. The 'border' customs never have a queue more than a couple of pax so no hurry to cross to the domestic side too soon. Once crossed no shower.

(Why is) Air France....in the list at all. (Shock that they are in the list.)

My previous post was perhaps a little ambiguous.

Because they met the criteria (dodgy at best). Explain that to the people who are relatives of those who dies due to pilot incompetence and pitot failure.

I tend to take these reports and statistics with a pinch of salt. Personally I would never fly (Sc)Air France* but will routinely fly American Airlines, the airline one below them in the table.

*Firstly because reading the recent reports about pilot training/competence does not fill me with confidence
Secondly because most Air France flights are destined for the country I know as Satan's Toilet

If that wasn't enough, Air France Concorde incident reports (over 26 years) should do it.

Well, there are:

Lies,
Damned Lies

and

Statistics!

What's the issue with Air France (besides the obvious Concorde Accident)?

Is a hull loss caused by mechanical failure the airline's fault? Say, if the QF A380 have of crashed is it Qantas' fault?
But the runway overshoot by QF, which was basically a flight deck cluster, should have more impact on QF's rating, as is was potentially a loss of life incident, caused directly by a QF employee.
