Worlds Safest Airlines for 2012

The one I find interesting is EK at number 4, given the incidents such as MEL tail scrape in the last few years. In my mind, that incident is a very serious safety issue.

of course, as with all "top xx_ lists" it comes down to the measurement criteria.

I find several interesting - Hainan at 8 - now where are all those vocal "You won't catch me dead on a Chinese carrier" AFF members now?

SQ at 30? ouch! MU at 36 / AA at 42 / US at 40 / SAS at 50

Probably still not flying a chinese carrier, on the believe that much like financial results past performance is not a good way to view future performance!

Its interesting how an airline that has never lost a passenger jet can be below airlines that have, they say its based on the past 30 years preformance, if thats the case surely QF scores much higher than many above it. Personally I think Qantas and Virgin Australia along wth Singapore Airlines are the safest. Didn't Air New Zealand fly a plane into the side of an Antarctica Mountain some time in the past 30 years.

It is funny you mention SQ - they lost a 747 last decade, which is much closer in time then NZ losing their DC10 over Antarctica

No, it was 34 years ago, like the last Qantas fatality in 1970 (TAA) not captured in the data, although it would appear they have missed the Safe Air crash in 2011 in regards NZ.

And the Silk Air 737 that did a vertical dive at the request of its captain.

Bit of German translation for those looking at the chart.
  • JAHR DER BETRIEBSAUFNAHME - year of (first) operation
  • FLUGZEUGVERLUSTE SEIT 1983 - aircraft losses since 1983
    • ANZAHL - number
    • TODESOPFER - deaths
  • ANZAHL DER JAHRE SEIT DEM LETZTEN FLUGZEUGVERLUST - number of years since last aircraft loss (capped at 30 years, i.e. any airlines who had a hull loss greater than 30 years ago, or never had one, will still be marked as 30 years)
  • SCHWERSTER FLUGZEUGVERLUST SEIT 1983 - heaviest aircraft loss since 1983
  • JACDEC-SICHERHEITSRATE 2012 - This is the JACDEC (the institute who did the study) "safety rating" for 2012 - no idea how it is determined

And the footnotes to those headings:
FLUGZEUGVERLUSTE SEIT 1983 (1)
(1) Footnote: "Refers to flights with passengers on board, no freight or ferry flights"

TODESOPFER (2)
(2) Footnote: Only refers to the victims in the respective planes without casualties on the ground or other aircraft

ANZAHL DER JAHRE SEIT DEM LETZTEN FLUGZEUGVERLUST (3)
(3) Footnote: If the airline is not crashed, the number of years since 1983 or the date of their establishment. The maximum value is 30

TODESOPFER (4)
(4) Footnote: airline previously not one of the 60 largest airlines

Never mind the ranking order, look at the 'Safety rating' number (assume its linear, not logrithmic!). No doubt a factor based on weighting of various criteria (obviously passenger deaths or hull losses aren't weighted that heavily :)).

Finnair 0.005 Qantas 0.012

Implies that Qantas is less than half as 'safe' as Finnair (based on the criteria).A

ll parochialism aside...... Really?

If you stepped back and said "I want to fly the safest airline', would anyone really think 'Don't fly Qantas, they are twice as 'unsafe' as Finnair'?Have gone to the site to get the detail behind the table. No dice. Looks like I'll have to buy the rag when I'm in Germany later this month. I'm on AC next Sunday, so at #25, 0.032 rating (SIX times worse than Finnair!!) I'm apparently making a relatively unsafe choice!

We need to make our own decisions here. I will fly Qantas anytime.

i believe ANZ scored well. They obviously missed the manslaughter of Mt Erebus
