First or second biggest supermarket retailer in the country?
Imagine WW in the toilet. Maybe Coles scoops up 50% of the doomed WW chain stores. Maybe they divide up the rest of the company. But either way, Coles will have the enviable position of having a dominating control of the supermarket sector. I'm sure Choice and the consumer advocacy groups will be very happy to roll out the red carpet to their new competition-free overlords.

On the other hand Aldi is now rolling out a major re-vamp with bigger, well-stocked fruit and veges on the entrance and more national brands. And Lidl is just around the corner. WW seems to have lost the plot...see Masters.

Nope, don't buy them either. Driving the other brands to the wall. Short term gain on the generic brands will mean less choice for you in years to come. 15 years ago we had 12+ supermarket chains competing for your dollar. Now we don't. Writing is on the wall.

I buy mostly generic items from Woolworths. Usually the only time I buy brand name goods is when there are half price specials on my favourite products. I doubt I'm going to get much in the way of Woolworths dollars from my regular products.

Of course, I'm hoping the targeted offers are a different story.

Ditto., I rarely buy name brand unless it's on special - and a good one. Reading today's catalogue, there is nothing I would buy that has an "orange ticket".

I'm a bit perplexed with the way that WW seems to rolling out the changes...
In the USA, the card discounts are simply that. With the card the item costs $x and without (at least theoretically) it will cost $x+y, where y is normally non-trivial. That aspect of the "program" seems to have been "omitted". And is apparently what the survey respondents asked for.

You can get any answer you want from survey respondents, depending on how the question is asked.
 
I read yesterday that very very few people had booked a QF reward flight by way of EDR points in the last 12 months - there was an exact % quoted but I don't remember what it was. I wondered how they worked that out?

Asking people if they had redeemed points for a flight in the past year is hardly a good measure of people interested in the Qantas program. Firstly, people might have spent points on gift vouchers, vacuum cleaners, toasters, hire cars or something else instead. Secondly, they might be saving up for a long-haul flight redemption.

Personally, I haven't redeemed QFF points for a flight in the past 12 months either. That doesn't mean I'm not interested - quite the opposite as I'm saving up for another oneworld award.
 
If I had redeemed QF points for a reward flight, QF would be the only body to know that. Plus, what if the EDR points were only 1% of the total points required for my redemption. I'm still at a loss as to how they even worked out such a figure. It's like saying that if you work 1 hour a fortnight, you are not unemployed, as was deemed some years ago.

Just a guess, I would think most EDR customers would not be far sighted enough to redeem for QF seats instead redeeming for vacuums, toasters, bicycles, and such. Buttons and beads.

Totally agree. The "research" is flawed on so many levels.
 
Snapping the catalogue from my stocard app (only way I get a catalogue in my apartment) I agree the $$shops are pretty poor.

Again, why they don't just incorporate the "dollars earned" into a discount off the original price is beyond me.
 
My concern is that Coles will see this as an opportunity to raise their prices...in concert!

I agree. And with a low $10 hurdle, it's not like they are going to get much breakage...

It will however help Qantas's breakage rate increase with orphaned points / more people not meeting the 18mth criteria

Yes this is perplexing me too. I cant possibly see how it will cost them that much. I wonder whether there is another agenda here, especially with the lucklustre opening catalougue?

I suspect it's gunna cost the manufactures much of the $500m, not Woolies ...

We regularly use crumpets but have not paid more than $2 a pack all year. I see they are now $3.10 with $1.10 in funny money ... I'll just go across the road to Coles where they were $1.55 recently.
 
I propose the Woolworths threads to be downgraded into the Shopping programs thread.

Also this guy noted what a WW exec said last year.

a woolworths exec made a statement a coupla years ago that went along the lines of: 'customers who buy milk and red meat have a lot less car accidents than those who buy soft drinks, rice and pasta, and those who buy petrol late at night, if we can fully develop our customer's profiles we would be able to offer cheaper insurance policies to those whose purchasing patterns suggest they are a lower risk'
