Why Oh Why

Nice try there too. It was only in the last couple of years I flew J overseas. As redemption flights. And my peers who certainly have the $ means fly Y as they prefer to spend when they arrive. Actually the only time I've bought J fares is next week to SIN because of the DSC that gets me to SG (so many acronyms)
We're the opposite. Most of our O'S J flights have been paid/self funded, only done a few reward flights long haul. Mostly because there is usually two of us, too many points and seats not always available.

To get back on topic, these are young'uns and they can cope with Y flights :)

Not that young! :p I actually struggle a lot with long Y flights; I get lower back pain/restless legs and I have a complete inability to sleep sitting up. I'm quite nervous about it at the moment.

Its stressful not being able to sleep if doing a lot of heavy touring immediately on arrival. Or working. In your case I reckon once you hit destination you will catch up pretty quick and given the weather there's no point doing much else

At your age we were taking an active 2 year old to Europe in Y and we discovered he didn't deal with ear pressure well. Now that was stressful.

The problem is, I get so overtired on the flight that I get quite agitated and upset. Its not fun. I've got melatonin to try so hopefully that helps. Will also be the first flight since my sinus surgery so hopefully it all goes well.

Try the melatonin out first at home I reckon. I understand about the agitation. I get that when I get hot. Very restless and almost panicky. I try say calming things to myself. 'This won't last forever' yada yada.

Tried it without any issues so should be good to go. One more day of work...

I feel your worry BC. When I am tired I get stressed easily and am inclined to weep rather. I have a friend in her seventies and her husband over 80; they always fly Y and survive OK without too many dramas. I can manage daylight flights but not so good on the overnighters as I can't sleep sitting up.
I remember once I thought I would take valerian to help relax me but the stink when I took the lid off the bottle was enough for me to shove the lid back on very quickly. Had visions of the passengers around complaining and being chucked off the plane.

Why is good for the soul ... occasionally ... ;)

This year I flew transpac twice each way in economy ... and survived.

Once was a QF July 1st fuel fine free fare (~$390) and the other an Orbitz error (~$370) booked on VA.

In a month I am off to the UK on QF - a $1200 ($1400 less AX $200) fare.

(Never actually managed to travel upper deck economy on a QF A380 before. ..)

I will be talking a spare pair of PJ's (or as QF called them in the 90's - an "oversuit").

Upper deck is worth its weight in gold.

After doing this, MEL-LAX and LAX-MEL, I can honestly say it's a good as it gets for Y.

To me, not having anyone behind you (in Y) is almost as important as legroom. Tapping on the screen (or hammering) and bumping into your seat for hours can be a bit annoying. There are quite a few seats in the upper deck economy that have no seat behind. Also, in upper deck economy, it seems a bit easier for the crew to extend a bit of PE/J service to higher status pax. The upper deck A380 Y cabin, although at the wrong end of the plane, does have a feeling of a mini-cabin too.

No you will be right, we are self funded, building points up at the moment using the advice from this site for hopefully an upgrade next trip. Two trips USA in Y, I don't sleep on the way over but we hit the ground running, in our late 50's and reasonably fit and healthy. It is not the journey, but the adventure :)

Certainly going to be an adventure :)
