Where else would you like to be able to earn points?

Today's Sydney Morning Herald (and The Age) has an article on page 24 in the business section talking about the Qantas loyalty division. You may also be able to view online here although a soft paywall exists.

There were a few interesting things that caught my eye such as the program now having 13.6 million members, Qantas wine grew 29% last year and two-thirds of points are actually earned on the ground but the main point of the article was the QF loyalty intention to return to pre pandemic growth.

The boss of Qantas’ loyalty division says the airline has a large pipeline of new business partners and direct-to-customer products to launch over the next 12 months, which will put the lucrative unit back on its prepandemic growth trajectory.
Recently when buying a jumper at Macpac in New Zealand they actually asked for an Air NZ airpoints card at checkout and in return I earned some trivial number of points but I thought it was interesting to see a retailer just able to scan the card (similar to petrol stations in NZ).

Now I can't think of a single place where it's not possible to earn points (either directly or indirectly via credit card etc) and as such I'm curious to hear if others can think of places where they'd like to earn more QF points?

I'm thinking they will want to leverage with businesses who already have a loyalty/rewards program of sorts - eg the partnership with Terry White (do I recall correctly that came to an end?), Woolies and so on.

Accor seems possible as we already know they have a partnership developing so I can see more opportunities with that tie-in.

I think an area they have barely touched is food - QF Restaurants was relatively small, but what about partnering with Uber Eats (I know there's Uber, but that seems limited) or one of the big fast food joints like Maccas or KFC or whatever to earn that way. I think they all have apps and things providing customer discounts and things that could potentially be leveraged somehow.

QF Shopping offers many opportunities with places like JB Hi-Fi and other outlets, but perhaps some way to extend that to in store purchasing may be an option. eg buy a big screen TV get 5k points (or whatever).

They probably do not want to tie in with say Dan Murphy's or other big chain to steal from QF Wine but that would probably be a bit of an earner also.

What about Bunnings?! I mean what a coup something like that would be? I am sure they've tried :) but how big is that?

Yes sure we earn using a CC at all these businesses, but clearly they want more ways to target consumers with deals and thus profits...

The other area I can think of is events or venues.. Now I know QF sponsor the cricket so what about say points for tickets or entry to games? or to concerts/events at venues? Maybe subscriptions to things like the Ballet or Theatre Companies.

btw is it any wonder earning on the ground (and by extension QF Wine has skyrocketed)? I mean hardly anyone has been able to earn in the air, and people in lockdown have well.. been buying more online and yes, drinking more (I may have gotten one or two cases more than perhaps I normally would...)

anyway just some thoughts.

Small beer but you can currently earn VFF points via Flybuys in Bunnings by buying giftcards at Coles. I'm sure very few people go to the effort though

Bit of dreaming there!

Dan Murphys would be in Woolworths Rewards if anywhere, and they have chosen not to go down that path

Similarly, Bunnings, being Wesfarmers and all would go Flybuys if it was to do anything.

Another area that occurs to me is things like rent/OC payment services like DEFT. That's the kind of thing many people use on a regular basis (like utilities) and could be a way to earn points.

yep, forgot Bunnings was owned by Wesfarmers so fair enough.

re Dan's... I think they're owned by Endeavour which has been split off from Woolies I think? that may be a bit murky there, but at least if those links still existed in some form either go WWR or potentially direct to QF.

I'm just throwing out ideas here rather than what I specifically want or would use (well OK, I'd buy more from Dans perhaps if Igot some points on the side lol)

I'd like to see QF partner up with gyms.

You can already earn Velocity points at Virgin Active gyms.

I'd sign up to any gym that offers QF points.

DEFT is such a rort, they could certainly afford at least some miserly points to users based on the surcharges they apply. Owned by Macquarie though (I think?) who aren't widely known for eye opening QF offers. But I don't think consumers largely have a choice here, so there's no incentive to offer QF points. Maybe QF Business Rewards to the landlords?

I'd gladly sign up for a gym and complete a minimum period to earn bonus points.

Others I'd consider in their shoes:
  • Agree re: JBHifi/The Good Guys - already supply a decent chunk of toasters to QF for the rewards store - you could see bonus QF points as carrots on top of discounts on TVs, etc at JB.
  • One of the auto servicing chains - possibly also car yards - an incentive to buy/sell/service your car there
  • RAC/NRMA/etc (though i think their insurance gives roadside assist so that could be a competitor)
  • Also agree re Ubereats (also for redemptions)
I guess from a business perspective QF would want places where the consumer would change their behaviour in order to earn points. I don't think QF points would make me more likely to use a toll road, take the bus, etc.

The other sweet spot is areas where the decision maker doesn't pay for the item but is personally rewarded for the purchase (i.e. business purchases). So even if the price is higher, the points become an incentive.

but what about partnering with Uber Eats (I know there's Uber, but that seems limited)

The Qantas-Uber agreement includes Uber Eats, which earns at a rate of 0.27 QFF points per dollar spent (1 Uber point per dollar, 750 Uber = 200 QFF)

I do find it surprising that they went to the hassle of running this promotion and didn't continue promoting the relationship.

aha. Thanks sudoer. I don't use Uber Eats so I admit I did not know this. I honestly thought the Uber deal was limited to trips to the airport for some reason.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Correct, but the terms of that deal give WWR exclusivity on any loyalty deals for three years.

So there won’t be a direct QF earn from Dan’s any time soon.

WWR which you could convert to QF potentially, but even that’s a long shot IMHO.

If there was revenue to be made, it would already be in action.

I honestly thought the Uber deal was limited to trips to the airport for some reason.

That was the old deal (pre Uber Rewards) which also included a status bonus. Much preferred that arrangement myself :(

Wouldn't surprise me if there's another car park deal in the works following the Secure Parking agreement ceasing in Feb 2020. (Wilson perhaps? They severed ties with Velocity a couple of years ago)

Some more options to earn Qantas points in New Zealand would be nice.

There is the tie-up with AA Smartfuel which gets you some "loose change", but in general I'm finding there aren't many places in NZ where I can earn Qantas points. And earning 90 Qantas points for spending $200+ per week at Countdown is a drop in the ocean compared to what I would earn with Woolies in Australia.

(Yes, I know I can join Airpoints - but that's not what this thread is about :))

Re: above.
I think that Dan Murphys does not accept WWR, they have their own rewards system.
If they did join the 2/or that if WWR was acceptable at Dans, that would be good, as some grogs are not sold at BWS, but are sold at Dans.
I did try to present my WWR card at Dans one time, was told it was not acceptable, but I could join Dan's own rewards program, which is individual to them.
BWS, for that one, yes, you can earn WWR with them.
Edit:
I'm thinking they will want to leverage with businesses who already have a loyalty/rewards program of sorts - eg the partnership with Terry White (do I recall correctly that came to an end?), Woolies and so on.
Re: Terry White Chemmart and QFF, yep, thats ending soon, or has already.
But you could go with SuperPharmacy.
Priceline would be good to be a join with QFF, I have one near me, granted that scrips/meds are always excluded from the Sisterhood club earning system.
Some things that WW/Coles don't sell, but pharmacies do, and to earn a bit more QFF points with them would be good.
Kogan is already in the QFF system, earn rate not that good though, maybe Wish.com, could be a good one if they had a tie in with QFF, yes, I know their items are cheapies, and break down so fast (!).

Anyone here got the qantas email about Solargain? Get 1000 points for a quote?

Here's another thought... what about tourist attractions? Not the Melbourne Star anymore lol but that got me thinking about attractions in general. What about things like Zoos? I think here one cne can get passes to visit multiple Zoos and that could be something to leverage.

Or what about tie ins with interstate visitor pass type deals (like I think QLD has a tourist pass thing for tram and train rides on a special Go card with discounts and things aimed at visitors).. How about transport options other than Uber - eg: Brisbane/SYD Air train and/or shuttle companies providing service (I know Skybus has or had a tie in with VA - smart move!)

see once we put our minds to it I htink a few of us have come up with quite a few places where potentially QFF could find opportunities :)

Had, unfortunately. Another partnership they axed just before the pandemic.

Was a great partnership and one I'd love to see Qantas pick up. The only issue I had was the requirement to present a physical Velocity card at the point of sale in order to get the points - I can't imagine Qantas would be keen on that given they seem to be moving in the digital card direction.
