When is Qantas going to cancel November flights?

Qantas has still only cancelled its international flights until the end of October 2020.

We have flight bookings in early November that we're unable to use, but we need to wait until Qantas cancels them, otherwise we will be charged cancellation fees.

We find it strange that Qantas is not making any decisions yet around flights that are less than 2 months away.

This is what they say about this on their website:

"Our regular pre-COVID-19 international network is unlikely to return until at least July 2021. Because the situation is constantly evolving and may change rapidly, we haven't, at this stage, made a decision to cancel international flights after October 2020."

Does anyone have any idea how Qantas will be dealing with this? Are people expecting them to announce cancellations on a monthly basis, maybe, or only for certain flights or destinations?

We'll continue to wait and monitor the situation, but was wondering if anyone here might have any insight into this.

Original poster of this thread with an update. QF1 flight for 6 November disappeared from our booking over the weekend. Got an email from American Express Travel yesterday (booked via them partly with travel credit) about that flight cancellation, but leaving the Coffs-Sydney leg as a confirmed flight.

I'll contact them on Monday (available business hours only) to say the whole booking should be cancelled and requesting a refund. Anyone know how the $450 travel credit will be treated? The original validity of that has long expired. Will be curious to see if they'll offer an extension, or that money is lost. I have another $450 that's supposed to be used by March, which probably won't be possible. We're not in Australia so can't use it...
Did you do the cancellation over the phone or on the internet? Just wondering how smooth the fee free aspect of the process is.
I cancelled an award on Tuesday last week over the 'phone. (WP and wait was about 90 seconds).

No issues about the full refund without penalty - I asked I was told two reasons, either being sufficient: 1) before 31st October (under the waiver policy) and 2) my second flight had been cancelled anyway(under significant change policy).

Points were back within 3 days.

QF have extended the fee free cancellation of classic rewards, so we were able to pull the pin on our flights to and from the US for Christmas without penalty.

I haven't been able to find information about this, can you please point me to it?

Our trip is a combination of paid flights CFS-SYD-SIN on Qantas, partly paid with my $450 Amex Qantas travel credit, and classic reward flights a few days later (we had planned to spend a few days in Singapore) SIN-LHR-AMS on BA - and these flight are still going.

It would be great if I could at least go ahead and cancel the reward flights without paying the cancellation fees.

I'll then just wait for Qantas to confirm QF1 to SIN is cancelled and apply for a refund for that part of the trip.

Apparently mixed bookings aren’t eligible.

That's OK, I'm not looking to cancel both bookings at once.

I found the information on penalty-free Classic Flight Reward booking cancellations of flights up to 31 January 2021: Flexible Classic Flight Rewards | Qantas Frequent Flyer

This is great. I can now go ahead and cancel the second part of the trip (SIN-AMS) and get all our points and fees and charges back.

Received an email re a “change” to an international booking departing 1 Dec.
Rang to request a refund and was offered a credit voucher plus DSCs, and 2 x FF points, and a 10% supplement on value of credit, and a Dec 2022 cutoff date for rebooking.
That package sounded amazingly generous.
Closer questioning led to substitution of “or” for each “and”.:)
Back to the request for refund.
And a 12 week wait “because we are so busy”.

nice at least they are moving on December.....I assume it’s Qantas metal?

So, was the ‘change’ actually a flight/trip cancellation advice?
Hopefully they come back soon and let us know.

i did notice this

If we’ve cancelled your Qantas flight, we'll rebook you on the next available flight to your booked destination (if possible), at no additional cost to you. Alternatively, you can choose a flight credit or a refund. You won’t be charged any change or cancellation fees. We’ll be contacting anyone whose flight has been impacted as soon as possible.

on this Booking changes and other options | Qantas so it could be just a straightforward email placing them on another flight

It was a combination of QF metal and QF code share. The “change” was a QF code share leg and the email advised that QF was seeking alternatives - but included the possibility of a call to discuss.
The CS agent focussed on only the “changed” leg but accepted my request to cancel all seven legs.

Just to clarify, which specific leg was changed? codeshare means other airline’s metal? I’m guessing it was mid-itinerary

Thanks.

Sigh.....so it actually means that Qantas is still not moving on Qantas flights.....October, November or December...
Well, the CS agent did begin to say:
“So you will still be flying ......
Oh. We won’t be flying those routes anyway!”

For what that’s worth.

They were QF metal, in December.

But, yes, I agree. More patience needed, at this stage, unfortunately.

Then again, you might be lucky enough to get an offer of DSCs+DFF points+10% credit bonus
:)

False alarm again - another email from QF this morning to accept a change to the return domestic connecting flight which has been cancelled but the only other option is for me to cancel the whole booking for a credit and not a full refund...
Finally an official cancellation notification for my QF flight on Christmas Day but I've been on hold for more than an hour to request a refund...
