LAX may well be a hole, as is staying at any airport in the world, however in the case of LAX if you don't want to stay "at" the airport you have some great places within 10 mins or so i.e. Crowne Plaza Hotel, Redondo Beach. Right opposite the marinas, close to some great bars and restaurants and some magic walks.Maximise your time in LAS. LAX is a hole. I travel between the two regularly with no problems, although the best scenario is when you can avoid LAX altogether by routing via SFO.
IIRC correctly, last time I drove it took me approx 3 hours to get to within 20 miles of LAX and another 2 hours to get the last bit. When ever possible I always get to my final departure point the previous day and save myself the possibility of stress associated with missed or close connectionsI'd plump for early morning departure from LAS to connect - unless the weather was forecast to be bad that morning. Always have the back up of driving from LAS to LAX... (not that I have done it)

Ball and chain made the decision, fly up at lunch time the day before, the winning argument was Lobster at the Santa Monica Pier thanks DC3
