Hi

I was just wondering what kind of jobs you all here have, that require you to do so much travel ?

Tennis umpiring requires me to do a *bit* of travel - but not much. Most of my travel (725 Qantas Status Credits last year) was optional leisure travel.

Dave

Scientific Sales means that I travel to conferences, both internationally and interstate. With a lot of the distributors in Europe, and with my language skills, I get posted there for a few weeks every year at various intervals to talk to them.

Most interstate travel is also to make sales.

I'm a financial management pre-sales consultant.

Most of my travel is domestic and designed to influence the sale of IT software. I wish I could travel internationally for work, but that's another issue!

I work in customer service to every regional and air transport airline in Australia, NZ and the Sth Pacific.
Needless to say this takes me INT & DOM regularly but the parent company is cutting back on our budgets so the path to Plat is a yearly challenge.
This time I've reached it with 4 months to spare :D

I'm a Certified Financial Planner in a family-owned Financial Services business. I caught the bug from watching my parents fly overseas since 1978 on Sales Conferences (every second year), with personal trips each alternate year.

I specialise in Corporate Superannuation, thus I have a number of national and multi-national companies as clients. One MNC in particular, required me in the last 2 years to do a signifiant amount of travel to every State capital (thus achieving Plat both years).

I also travel overseas to see clients (expats living in SIN, HKG and LHR) as well as family in the USA in a similar business.

In my leisure time, I also travel overseas, as I know that soon my travelling days might be over (family considerations, no it hasn't happened yet).

I'm in the the agriculture industry, basically in a role in managing product stewardship, amongst other things. Although based in Melbourne, with a lot of time in northern NSW (a lot of Dash 8 flights), I have spanned the continent (as far away as the Ord), and spend a lot of time outside the cities (as a result I've probably flown on nearly all of the different types of aircraft operating domestically at the moment!). Throw in the odd Asia Pac meeting and suddenly Platinum is easy to achieve. Not all smooth "sailing", as it can be tiring and there is lots of driving as well, but certainly gives plenty of variety (not to mention the odd FF point or three!).

I am group taxation manager for an engineering company headquartered in Australia. My job entails travel to most of our offices at least once a year. I am currently in Thailand after visiting Manila and HK. After a quick sojourn for a week and a half, travelling to Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh in Cambodia and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam I then get back into business mode to Singapore, KL and Jakarta.

I have also been to the UK and out offices in Auckland, Fiji and Nairobi. Status? Just argentum. We have a policy of both cheapest (therefore discount economy) on all routes except SYD-LHR-SYD (WT+) and/or use of the lowest cost airlines which therefore does not alsways mean consistent earning of points/credits with one loyalty scheme. The current trip will be CX,CX,CX,CX,SG,SG,SG,CX and QF. Not bad for oneworld but still not a lot of credits.

I'm kind of lost in deciding which direction my career will be going

I am starting a first year international business course in march, although i'm not 100% sure if i will continue all through it.

If i finish it i was going to try and enter qantas graduate entry program. and either try international logistics or something else.

Thing is i dont' know if i will enjoy business (being a science and maths guy) so i was just looking for some ideas of career paths.

- If worst comes to worst there is still the airforce :)
or air traffic controller school :)

Become a tennis umpire - spend a week at a tournament staying in the same hotel as the players (and the likes of Andre, Pete and Lleyton do not stay at hovels) umpiring two, maybe three matches per day, then have a week off and go to another tournament, and so on all year. Flights and accommodation are all paid for by the ATP or ITF (depending on who you work for) and you get to see some great tennis.

Of course, you have to put up with obnoxious arrogant conceited little ****** like HIM from Adelaide, but you get that. :D

Dave

Pacific Region Sales & Marketing Manager for a US-based publisher. Did a stack of travel around Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Indonesia and of course requisite trips to the head office in Chicago. Got me WAY past Platinum for a good few years.

Had a real break from travel for the past year or so, working in a State-focused role.

BAD MOVE.

Likely I'll be hitting the road/ sky/ etc again shortly.....

Work in an IT role, and get a fair bit of domestic flying (mostly in discount economy - and getting to platinum like that means I fly far too much :) )

Work as an IT and Management Consulting company. Right now have to fly back and forth each week to Canberra and back to Melbourne.

I also do a lot of holiday travel each year and I'm just a few credits away from Silver membership. HEHE.

Regards
Daniel

davem,

Were you thinking that the RAAF would be a 'second / third' choice of career?

Surely, anyone who can ACTUALLY gain entry to the ADF as an officer should consider the ADF a FIRST choice!

It is so competitive to get through to the selection board these days..... I've tried, and missed out several times over as many years. Recently I received a letter from Recruiting, stating that I am no longer eligable to apply for DEO (direct officer entry) in my field of specialty, because I've had seven attempts - and failed..... therefore, 'please do not waste the taxpayer's money' on any further applications!!!

Even though I'm a 'registered health professional', I can't just 'walk in' to a position as an officer in any of the ADF services. It is EXTREMELY competitive for doctors, nurses, physios, and even psychologists to get through the complete set of recruitment selection procedures, let alone other fields of specialty for officer employment.

I recommend, that you go for your applications with the ADF, and take anything you are offered..... if you miss out...... then, think of 'something else'.

I was an enlisted airman in the RAAF when I was 17yo. (straight from school and the ATC cadets). In the 1970s, ADF recruiting could get away with giving potential recruits any type of bullsh*t they wanted.... as long as they 'got you'. I joined up in a field I really didn't like or have the aptitude for, and got out after my first term was up. I really should have stayed, and gone for 'further education' opportunities etc. instead of getting out. They still refer to your service record, even when you are applying after being out for twenty years, and the psych. officer asks you "well, why did you want to leave the Service?" etc. etc.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you do.....

best regards,

Hmm

About that RAAF thing.

I was going to go and apply during my first semester of uni

I didn't apply straight after school as well i didn't think i was ready to well, leave.

So far it looks like continuing business at Uni

In april (when i'm 18) trying out for Air traffic controller
Some time in the next month try and arrange a test for the RAAF (I'm only interested in becomeing a pilot though atm.)

Does anyone have any info on become a pilot in the Raaf?
IE, how it is like and how compeditive it is

If you pass the officer test then you go for 2 weeks for flight assesment in NSW and then they pick from there

Although i think i'm going to have to go to their office and find out some more

Thing is is that the website is confusing and i think that you might have to actualy join the defence force before you are sent on the 2 weeks.

And ATM unless i can become a pilot i don't want to join yet as i'd like to have some studies behind me that i can use.

:( thing was i left everything too late last year, and well now i'm only realy exploring my options.

Contractor to state govt, partner recently relocated to HK. More travel than I've ever done in my life.

Davem,

If you want to be a pilot for the airforce you basically have to be the perfect human being. My brother applied and was rejected because he didn't have the perfect sight that they required even though he doesn't wear glasses and didn't even know he had a problem until his physical exam. Also you usually need to have the extremely high marks so I'm guessing anything below a distinction average won't cut it. I'm not sure what they expect from Uni grads exactly this is based on my brothers experiences coming straight from school.

I hope you can do it, but be aware that they are very choosey about who they train to be a pilot as you are going to have millions of dollars spent on you to train you to become a pilot.

:( ah well i'm going to try

My vision is less than perfect
However it was my understanding that as long as 2 pairs of glasses are carried then it is possible to gain a class 1 medical

not that i need glasses continuously

Does that mean you take the photos.... or are the subject of the photos?

Hey, what kind of 'upgrades' come with a job like that?
