What I ate today - the food thread

Dinner at a Thai place, Bo Rarn, ADL CBD.

IMG_1844.jpegIMG_1843.jpeg

We planned to go to and did go to Golden Boy thai restaurant. But we were told that they are only doing the feed me menu - which is a chef curated set menu at $72/person. Most of my travel party did not feel like indulging in another feed me menu situation after the amazing Indian dinner at Jasmine the previous night. So we tried a different Thai place - Bo Rarn.

Nice decor, warm light settings. The restaurant is a tribute to Lord Hanuman, a god from the Hindu religion. The walls are decorated with images and depictions of Lord Hanuman. The restaurant itself was too warm, bordering hot temperature, but was alright I guess. Once we got used to the temperature, we were alright.

Started with their vegan spring rolls - amazing dish. Simply amazing. The filling had nice flavour and makes you keep going back. I was the only vego, so I had all the three rolls to myself. I did offer to share, but others had satay chicken and prawns - guess they had better things to tuck into than a vegan spring roll. Anyways, more for me! Yayy!

For mains, I had ordered the vegan fried rice (and as some of you might have guessed the pattern) with a side of fresh chilli. 😊

As the mains hit the table, I could see eggs in the dish. So I had to politely decline and send it back. The waitperson was apologetic and took the dish back to be replaced. Mistakes happen eh! At this point in time, I had a change of mind and I asked if I could get the red curry with tofu instead of the fried rice.

The kitchen was happy for the dish swap. I also ordered a serve of rice and a roti. It took a bit longer than usual, but the red curry was served. It has pineapple and lychee in it along with a generous portion of carrots, sweet potatoes and what I think were edamame beans? The dish was flavour full and had the subtle sweetness from the fruits. The chilli on the side, albeit not fresh, did an excellent job in balancing the dish. used all the rice and roti to mop up the dish.

I also had Jasmine Green tea to accompany all the dishes.

Come bill time, the restaurant offered the rice and roti I had for free for the earlier dish mix up. I refused and offered to pay the whole bill, but they were insistent that the rice and roti was on the house.

Was a good night with good dishes. Will definitely come back.

Today's breakfast. Total of S$8

My wife had two Dosai and a coffee.

I had the "Indian Toast Set". Due to the waiters poor English and my non-existent Tamil I missed out on the little bowl of Chicken Curry that came with it. I didn't really need it anyway.

Two "half boiled eggs". Actually, barely 1/4 boiled. Plus a Dosai and Pandan Tea.

It’s been over 6 months since I had Dosai. My mouth’s watering seeing this 🤣

Edit: the store name translates to Kumar (is the name of a person), mama is uncle, Kadai is store and Veetu Saapadu means home cooked meals. If you need any help with Tamil, pls PM me, I’ll help 😀

Thanks for the offer of translation duties .

This was one of little roadside cafe"s at Changi Village. It was doing a very good breakfast trade and did seem to be operating as a family run place

Miss H has developed a flair for cooking and baking.

After sending me shopping to get a bunch of ingredients including “the biggest bag of icing sugar you can find”, she set about baking cupcakes.

Several hours later I wandered into the kitchen and was simply stunned.

This is the just-opened, 2nd fixed Spice on Wheels in Hobart. In Sandy Bay so conveniently just down the road. Food superb, and service from the one staff member (to be increased as they open fully) excellent. She kept providing fresh papad as well as pickle and raita through the meal, at no charge.

Colmar for lunch. With a beer, soft drink and bread 60Euro.

I have never been in Europe previously for White Asparagus season. So I was determined to try it and was not disappointed. Served cold with ham, a basic salad and homemade mayonnaise.

Service was a bit slow even though we were the only guests dining. As we were heading to "An Evening with Tommy Emmanuel," we had our desserts delivered to our room for later in the evening

Very enjoyable meal - apart from the couple who really CMO - empty restaurant and this couple facetimed family and friends for 20 minutes at top volume whilst they had their free ALL wines 🫣 they better not be there at breakfast!

7 thick spears - that's about a $6 bottle full at Harris Farms. I think theirs is from South America but it is good value.

We wanted a quiet day today so we hopped onto a random tram and rode it to the end of the line. I chose one because it had an interesting sounding destination - Illkirch Graffenstaden. In the end it was nowhere special just an old town that had turned into an outer suburb of Strasbourg due to urban sprawl. We decided to have lunch there.

To give you an idea of what you get for a daily special outside the city centre.

We both had the Terrine for entree

My wife had the Ravioli.

I had Palette a la Diable. It is apparently a traditional dish in Alsation cuisine. Much to my surprise it turned out to be baked pork with white mustard sauce and potatoes. It was very similar what my mother would have made for tea in Perth 60 years ago. Except the pork would probably have been done in a pressure cooker.

It was not haute cuisine but good ingredients well prepared. The locals obviously agreed as we were put onto the last available table.

As we were paying the bill the woman at the till asked how we had enjoyed it. After we had said how much we had liked it she nodded to a very young woman standing nearby who was obviously the cook. She was very happy with our comments especially when I said we had a similar pork dish in Australia.

Lunch yesterday at the Calile Hotel, Fortitude Valley.

Glad I got the fish, was beautifully cooked and very tasty

IMG_2642.jpeg

The tart shell was a little thick and hard to cut with a fork, heard and saw others having trouble. The meringue was beautiful, the lemon tartness was just right
