Western Sydney Airport (WSI) Discussion

Few pax wanting to go to Sydney will want to go to Badgery's Creek and then find a way to get to the city in
And people failing to understand the catchment area for the airport.

WSI will start small.. it would be a planning disaster if it hits 10M capacity (or roughly ADL) year 1.
It will be a white elephant if they aren't planning the next stage of terminal expansion by the mid-2030s..

I very very occasionally have work out west, Parramatta, Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown, etc. A flight from WSIA to WLG would be a good choice. But I wonder if car hire companies would treat it together with SYD as one location, or would we be hit with a re-location fee if you entered by one and left with the other? Generally I would lose about A$3,000.00 if I had to use WSIA as that would be the value of the lost business opportunity if I had to travel from the East. I am a consultant and time is money! No, that's not my hourly rate!

Agreed. Considering it is primarily JQ setting up a large base of WSI thus far and QfLink are only basing 5 aircraft with no mainline QF ops to start off with.

We still don't even know if VA will be entering routes out of WSI, with only just over a year before the airport opens for RPT operations.

I wouldn't worry about WSI right now, given it is government owned so it will run for decades to come, whether it is "white elephant" or not. If they need to, they can just take WSI out of Sydney Metro list to allow more airlines to fly there without impacting the metro quota.

What NSW government needs to do though is to fast track development of Bradfield and surrounding areas to provide lots of jobs.

People also are forgetting that the freight is the initial selling point. Freight organisations refused to move to Avalon whereas they jumped at the chance to move operations to WSI. It will be the airfreight hub of Australia in a rapidly growing industry

Yep, the dedicated freight ops can’t wait to get out there. Most have already move their warehousing out there already.

Hopefully that will free up some space to make T1 a bit more efficient as well. Although some freight will continue to come and go below the self-loading cargo.

Why is it that every few weeks this thread ends up re-litigating the same argument?

Why don't we just wait and see what happens and if you get a choice between SYD or WSIA (or whatever). I think some unsuspecting travellers from AKL to WSIA, on the proposed Air NZ route, might get a surprise!

While I hate to say this, I do agree with you.

And, I did live in Western Sydney for quite a while, so I think I know the demographics. Whether that will tip the balance, I don't know. Good luck to WSI (an airport we didn't have to have, but got anyway).
