Western Sydney Airport (WSI) Discussion

Just how many PAX flights are there to and from AVV? I can only see about 14 to 20. Is this what to expect at WSI?
JQ and QF have already announced they'll be planning to set up bases for 10x A320s and 5x QFLink jets at WSI.

WSI will gradually build from day 1 with the largest Australian airline group putting in the $ to set the JQ / QFLink bases from the get go.

Probably what was said about AVV, but then WSI has more infrastructure around it.
Avalon was never going to work.
Western Sydney will be huge and has the government backing to make it work. Major International airlines have already committed to WSI with more to come, whereas Avalon struggled to attract even LCC’s.

We actually can't afford (both financially and metaphorically) to continually build outwards until we've built upwards somewhat more.

You aren't taking into account Australians' clear preference for living in a detached house, even though block sizes have dramatically decreased from the 1950s c.750 square metres to as low as 240 square metres today. This applies even if there's more travelling time to work because a couple or family live in an outer suburb.

Apartments/flats/condominiums are a second best situation for children to grow up in.

Western Sydney will be huge and has the government backing to make it work.

A very poor "solution" domestically compared to high speed rail that our politicians largely seem ignorant of, despite how we have a High Speed Rail Authority that is very slowly undertaking preparatory works on the Sydney to Newcastle "corridor".

Like AVV, Western Sydney Airport will have a distinct three letter code that's dissimilar to the capital city airport.

Many travellers are informed and would never make this mistake, but is it going to be a problem for the great unwashed (and even some foreign travel agents) that if (say) SQ has one flight a day from SIN to the new airport, some travellers end up being booked to the 'wrong' airport?

Does this already occur with JQd flights to/from Avalon?
I have a friend who for two decades has kept their vow to never contemplate travelling on Jetstar again..

This after a day trip Melbourne to Sydney using Jetstar. Their return flight was cancelled and they were rebooked on another Jetstar flight to Melbourne.

It was only after arrival they realised they were at Avalon while their vehicle was parked at Tullamarine.

Given that WSI has clearly state its expected growth, anyone in an affected area would find it hard to complain that they weren't aware of it.

That has rarely stopped residents who live near freeways or rail lines that 'got busier' from advocating for noise walls to be erected, or wanting double or triple glazing of their homes.

Yes, WSI will probably be more "successful" than AVV, but it may still be a relative white elephant. Govt backing does not ensure success (remember the Voice?). The Govt can throw money (or issue threats) to airlines, but there may well just be token compliance, to test the water. Of course the LCC will gladly accept the Govt's handouts and try to snare pax via cheap tix a la Avalon), something the mainstream airlines won't do.

Few pax wanting to go to Sydney will want to go to Badgery's Creek and then find a way to get to the city in a timely and relatively comfortable way. So let's see how it goes.

And people failing to understand the catchment area for the airport.

WSI will start small.. it would be a planning disaster if it hits 10M capacity (or roughly ADL) year 1.
It will be a white elephant if they aren't planning the next stage of terminal expansion by the mid-2030s..

I very very occasionally have work out west, Parramatta, Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown, etc. A flight from WSIA to WLG would be a good choice. But I wonder if car hire companies would treat it together with SYD as one location, or would we be hit with a re-location fee if you entered by one and left with the other? Generally I would lose about A$3,000.00 if I had to use WSIA as that would be the value of the lost business opportunity if I had to travel from the East. I am a consultant and time is money! No, that's not my hourly rate!

Agreed. Considering it is primarily JQ setting up a large base of WSI thus far and QfLink are only basing 5 aircraft with no mainline QF ops to start off with.

We still don't even know if VA will be entering routes out of WSI, with only just over a year before the airport opens for RPT operations.

I wouldn't worry about WSI right now, given it is government owned so it will run for decades to come, whether it is "white elephant" or not. If they need to, they can just take WSI out of Sydney Metro list to allow more airlines to fly there without impacting the metro quota.

What NSW government needs to do though is to fast track development of Bradfield and surrounding areas to provide lots of jobs.

People also are forgetting that the freight is the initial selling point. Freight organisations refused to move to Avalon whereas they jumped at the chance to move operations to WSI. It will be the airfreight hub of Australia in a rapidly growing industry
Yep, the dedicated freight ops can’t wait to get out there. Most have already move their warehousing out there already.

Hopefully that will free up some space to make T1 a bit more efficient as well. Although some freight will continue to come and go below the self-loading cargo.

Why is it that every few weeks this thread ends up re-litigating the same argument?
If you think it's bad on this thread you should have a browse of the Virgin forum!

Why don't we just wait and see what happens and if you get a choice between SYD or WSIA (or whatever). I think some unsuspecting travellers from AKL to WSIA, on the proposed Air NZ route, might get a surprise!

While I hate to say this, I do agree with you.

And, I did live in Western Sydney for quite a while, so I think I know the demographics. Whether that will tip the balance, I don't know. Good luck to WSI (an airport we didn't have to have, but got anyway).

Really? Been discussed for decades given SYD will never have the curfew lifted.

Many years later - still not actually open of course…
I'm not against a second Sydney airport, but just not where it's been plonked. Surely RAAF Richmond would have been a better place to start with. Oh, sorry, I forgot the noise issue....

Or failing that, just make Badgery's Creek a LCC, GA and freight airport. Oh wait, that's what it is.
