Watch this space

I have a "few" watches. Some now over 5o years old. They don't go out of fashion.

I love watches. It's one of my 3 kryptonites.
You don't buy a watch to tell the time - it symbolises something deeper and is a reflection of who you are. It's all style.

The Apple watch really should be called the Apple Extension. Nobody honestly uses it to tell the time...and if they did it would go flat in a matter of hours from being 'always on'.

Don't judge me for buying one, but I did. I've only just gotten around to setting it up, and I quite like it. (I also love proper, automatic watches too, this is just a toy)
I think there'll be some great innovation come out in the space over the next 3-6 months which will make it even better, and there will always be the next iteration of hardware that will be five times better at everything.

Only problem I need to fix now is this one though:

Has anybody got some use out of apple watch App yet? Aside from the inability to use BP's, what are the general thoughts?
I've finally bit the bullet and am ordering a watch tonight...

I used it to get into the QC on my last trip, rather than digging my phone out. Of course, it ended up taking longer than the phone would have because the lounge staff were keen to admire the watch :) The alerts and info about upcoming flights also work well, but I also have the TripIt app, which takes care of that for me anyway.

Let's be honest, the Apple watch will have a lifespan of two years if you're lucky!

The iPhone product cycle is around 6 months...

Expected life cycle is not a reason for not buying technology. if you took that attitude with any computing product you would still be using an abacus :)

Plus in two years your IWC won't be obsolete and worthless!

So they'll just spend several days queueing up in 2 years time to part with a similar amount of money for the next version so they can brag about it on Facebook.

People can always scan their freq flyer card to board no matter how they checked in however that won't look nearly as cool which could be a huge issue for some.

I don't think that the Apple Watch us about "looking cool" for most customers, however there is nothing wrong with buying new tech products if it brings joy.
I'm sure many members on these forums buy nice cars or expensive wines, we certainly spend money on J fares (perhaps even other very expensive watches)... This Apple Watch costs a tiny fraction of those mentioned splurges and really is no different.

Many still do And they still work perfectly well I'm reliably informed.
:)

So, the watch arrived today (2 and a half weeks ahead of schedule) and so far seems pretty good..
However minor thing... It seems that the Qantas app constantly logs me out of both the iPhone and Apple Watch app now... Logging in with all that information just to open the apple watch app screen is a bit annoying.

Anybody else had this issue?

I'd be happy to follow up for you. As reference, which iPhone and app version are you using?

+1 here.

No matter how many times I login on the phone and save my details, if I go in on the watch it's always "please login on your phone..." and basically useless.

Using the latest Apps and OS on both watch and phone, as far as I know.

admittedly i did a very quick search but this seems to be the only thread about the apple watch. any more comments about the +/- of it generally, as well as with the qantas app? i'm flying out shortly and tossing up whether to get one. 10% discount would be nice given the pricetag!

cheers

Check out the macrumors watch forum for a lot of discussion. WatchOS has just been updated, which should fix the slowness of third party apps as app developers update their apps to take advantage of the improvements.

It's handy to have my calendar and flight alerts on my watch, and to be able to get the more discrete notifications that the watch offers vs my phone.

There are watch-faces that show you where you are in the world, or multiple time-zones at once, or sunrise and sunset times, which are nice features when travelling.

Physically, the stainless steel model is a lovely object, and it is well made: water resistant with a scratch-proof face. It's a better-than average fitness tracker, too.

I've only once tried using it as a boarding pass, and that didn't work so well, since it timed out and went back to the clock face between bringing up the pass and getting to the front of the boarding queue.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Have recently ordered one having been a Pebble user for the past few years. Ultimately, the latest Pebble just hasn't won me over and actually pushed me away a little. I'll be looking forward to the slightly more advanced UI. Obviously, I ordered through the Qantas Mall, so I have to wait for delivery, instead of buying in-store ;)

Any plans to develop the app for Tizen?
The Samsung S2 watch is the first smart watch to tempt me.

The watch is great, not a life changer but I didn't expect it to be.. I love the calendar functionality and flight alerts (having the gate details and delays etc right here is super handy)
Qantas app leaves alot to be desired and could be improved however it's still pretty good. Same as the Air New Zealand app, it's cough until the day of your flight when all the functionality kicks in.

Has anyone tried the Tripit app on a watch with a pro subscription?
I run all my travel plans through tripit and it is the main reason I would look at a smart watch.

Yes, I use TripIt Pro and the app works pretty well.
