Virgin Blue steals AFL official airline contract from Qantas

I still think you will find that the Collingwoods etc will charter private jets to WA and maybe Brisbane. It wouldn't surprise me if the WA teams also charter an aircraft for at least some of the games. It would be expensive to do it for all of them but it might be a worthwhile investment.

Both WA teams were unaware of the charter plane last year. If anything the teams most affected about the change of supplier would be the WA teams/teams who would be flying every second week.

Talking about charter flights, QF can provide a mean charter service...Just ask the pope and/or the Socceroos!

UPDATE: We've now heard from the AFL who say although Andrew Demetriou's entry to Qantas' Chairman's Lounge will come to an end, he has not been refused entry to that lounge in the last week.

Except the players, who lose lounge access (ok my get DJ access), and no upgrades until DJ has J.. apparently the clubs aren't happy either...

Looks like the Lions have sucked it up, they are in the lounge in MEL and on my flight, so Lounge entry was no doubt part of the deal, which is fair enough. Two years ago I was in Perth with the Cats and they were not in the QP at all!

Looks like the Lions have sucked it up,

They don't *really* have a choice, the AFL has punitive measures in place to force them to use Virgin in line with the master deal.

It was all posturing, huffing and puffing by the clubs who obviously were not that thrilled about the deal. They all knew they didn't have much say or voice in the matter.

Yes- like appointing Ricky Nixon as player manager for those who refuse

The Lions were only given 4 seats in PE and the exit rows surprisingly, with Row 1 empty and row 3 had non status pax (you can tell when they comment, "why so much room, we did not have this on the way down). Some of the big boys were moved to Row 1 after take off, not sure how the ruck watched TV in row 2, his knee was in the way most of the time!

Wonder if that all white DJ 737 with a navy stripe down the fuselage with AFL insignia on it is dedicated a/c to fly teams around & if it has more pitch in the rows?

Saw the "Gold Coast" liveried plane awaiting at T3 ~1115 as we taxied out to head to BNE this morning.

**bump**

Working at the grand final today and the flyover was done by one of the Virgin A330's - VH-XFB.

And some people still referred to it as the Qantas flyover!! Given the paint scheme VA modeled so closely on QF who could blame them!

Came from behind us in the Souther stand; managed only a poor Quality snap before it disappeared into the low cloud to the North.

The corresponded with a 2 minute play of the recent Virgin Australia advertisements on all the screens.

We didn't get anything either.

Certainly not as impressive as a 747 or A380 flying over.

The weather conditions were pretty poor - honestly, with the way the aircraft disappeared into the very low cloud base I was surprised they gave the go-ahead.

Watching live I said to myself, there goes the Qantas A380, and didn’t think twice of it till I saw this thread and it dawned on me. :p

Didn't you notice the plane only had 2 engines? Must've had your Oktoberfest beer goggles on Sam? :p
