December 2025 | VA1422 | CNS to SYD
Enjoyable trip home from Cairns thanks to a successful UpgradeMe bid - a steal at just $65 each! I suspect everyone in J was upgraded as the cabin was showing 0/8 a couple days out before jumping to 6/8 at the same time as our upgrade cleared.
Boarding commenced more or less on time, about ten minutes behind schedule. Was pleased to see Santa parked at the gate next to us!

Before long it was time for PDBs and our CM Nick came around to introduce himself. I'm sure he is a popular figure amongst the frequent flyers here, he's such a character and I was glad to see he hasn't changed a bit since my last flight with him in 2023! I went with water and my travelling companion a sparkling wine.

Nick came around not long after takeoff for early dinner orders, taken in the standard 1AC, 1DF, 2AC, 2DF. Options were exactly the same as my last flight, stir fried beef in black bean sauce with seasoned rice and bok choy or vegetable ragout cottage pie with roast vegetables. We took both options and I went with the cottage pie this time. Everyone got their first choice.
Both were accompanied by cheese and crackers and a honey cake. I was really impressed with the cottage pie.

Service after the meal from Nick was top-notch as always with drink top ups regularly offered as well as snacks from the pantry. Got some chips as well as the almond and pretzel mix, both of which were very good. He apologised for having run out of ramekins for the almonds and pretzels but serving it in a mug with a handle did have its benefits given the turbulence on this particular day!

Only minor disappointment was that Wi-Fi wasn't available, a shame as they have installed the new seating since my last trip on this particular aircraft but obviously haven't gotten around to the Wi-Fi part yet. Otherwise fantastic and if every VA flight in J was this good I'm sure they would have an incredibly content and loyal fanbase!
