Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

December 2025 | VA1422 | CNS to SYD

Enjoyable trip home from Cairns thanks to a successful UpgradeMe bid - a steal at just $65 each! I suspect everyone in J was upgraded as the cabin was showing 0/8 a couple days out before jumping to 6/8 at the same time as our upgrade cleared.

Boarding commenced more or less on time, about ten minutes behind schedule. Was pleased to see Santa parked at the gate next to us!

Before long it was time for PDBs and our CM Nick came around to introduce himself. I'm sure he is a popular figure amongst the frequent flyers here, he's such a character and I was glad to see he hasn't changed a bit since my last flight with him in 2023! I went with water and my travelling companion a sparkling wine.

Nick came around not long after takeoff for early dinner orders, taken in the standard 1AC, 1DF, 2AC, 2DF. Options were exactly the same as my last flight, stir fried beef in black bean sauce with seasoned rice and bok choy or vegetable ragout cottage pie with roast vegetables. We took both options and I went with the cottage pie this time. Everyone got their first choice.

Both were accompanied by cheese and crackers and a honey cake. I was really impressed with the cottage pie.

Service after the meal from Nick was top-notch as always with drink top ups regularly offered as well as snacks from the pantry. Got some chips as well as the almond and pretzel mix, both of which were very good. He apologised for having run out of ramekins for the almonds and pretzels but serving it in a mug with a handle did have its benefits given the turbulence on this particular day! 😂

Only minor disappointment was that Wi-Fi wasn't available, a shame as they have installed the new seating since my last trip on this particular aircraft but obviously haven't gotten around to the Wi-Fi part yet. Otherwise fantastic and if every VA flight in J was this good I'm sure they would have an incredibly content and loyal fanbase!

Christmas day flying.

Choice of two dishes for breakfast this morning. I went for the scrambled eggs with potatoes, Boston baked beans and sausage. The alternative was a pancake stack (appeared to be 2 pancakes) with berry compote and marscapone cream.

Breakfast was accompanied with a small, rich Christmas fruit cupcake, as well as a white chocolate candy cane flavoured Lindt ball. Tea and coffee were naturally available, along with regular soft drinks.

I know many scrambled eggs on board are powdered, but parts of this plate were quite powdery. Potatoes were also quite floury and not pleasant to eat - maybe I'm having a bad run with onboard potatoes. Boston beans were nice, though there were a couple of beans in the mix that somehow escaped enough cooking. Surprising that my cutlery set contained a fork and spoon - no knife. Not a big deal for me, being raised in an Asian household and very used to using a fork and spoon over fork and knife, even to cut the sausage with.

CSM Yannika had a festive bow in her hair and wore her Christmas stockings as well. Orders were taken in order of 1DF, 1A, 2DF, 2AB. Textbook execution of the service by the crew. A further round of drinks was offered after clearing the trays. One thing I hadn't noticed as a procedure is that when the coughpit door is to be opened, another member of crew is summoned to the front to "guard" the galley area as the CSM opens the door and interacts with the coughpit - perfectly understandable SOP.

It’s a very ‘USA’ thing to guard the door/galley area. Qantas don’t need to suspend the entire service doing it.

According to info available on the web, both dnata and Gategourmet use liquid eggs, delivered in bulk, rather than powdered eggs.

Which makes sense as they don’t have to spend time rehydrating them.

There was something in my eggs with some sort of fine coarse texture.

Thinking back again, not mentioned but I believe there was some cheese in the scramble. It might be that (fine bits of cheese).

could be powdered parmesan or other cheese! That would make sense in terms of even distribution in the final product!
