Vinomofo Wine Deals

Sage words Rug, I'm a pretty laid-back sort of guy but RRV needs to be little bit more conscious of the tone of his postings as it comes across as downright aggressive. As far as the car-buying analogy goes I'm not convinced, on-line wine buying is a considerable leap of faith, shelling out hundreds of dollars on a product that (in the case of contraband and black market deals) is unable to be tasted pre-purchase. At least with a dodgy car sale you can eyeball the vehicle in person, test drive it and in fact get your mechanic to give it the once over. Until I came across FF (obviously by my post-count only quite recently) I had been reliant on my own intuition to assess the identity of the wines without any other input. Only a short while ago I correctly guessed the Ulithorne Familia and Jack Shiraz but now this forum has become a daily ritual for me and having access to it's esteemed members views will hopefully ensure far fewer misfires....

The analogy about buying a car was purely based on buying it on advertising alone online otherwise your statement about car buying is true. Buyuing wine online as you say either contraband or secret deals requires research and teamwork by and from all members. Even then some may not enjoy the wine and therefore send it back. As yet I have returned none; as some have said good for cooking; good for drain cleaner and some given away but over 90% have been enjoyed. Cheers

Hi Rug

i am very happy you have had a 90% success so far. I am a little concerned you are prepared to keep or offload to friends your drain cleaner. The only way as a community we can stop these merchants from peddling us c&@p is to send it back. If they keep the sale then they see it as a success and peddle us more rubbish. They will only change their practices if you send it back. I have a very simple process for this. Is it worth what I paid for it?(not Rrp). If not it goes back. I find 15% goes back and the merchants seem happy with this. If a merchant provides a few duds in a row they go to the naughty corner for a while. Cellarmasters and Vinomofo have both had recent stints.
Please give your friends good wines. They tend to reciprocate in kind.
cheers Birdyzone

Hi Birdyzone; I have found that what I may not totally like there are others who do. I dont JUST GIVE them away my social circle have a chance to try them and if they like them they can have them. The point people miss is Vinomofo now have more customers. As I said before we all have different taste buds. Through esteemed members here I have found many great wines that I would not have known about, liked and cellared. I have tried some supposedly great wines but they did not do anything for me; even though the host was raving about this red wine and this chardy is so damn good. If I come across real let downs then I will exercise my right to return. Cheers

Tomich Winemakers Reserve Chardy. I enjoyed it, as described but not something to Scream from the rooftops. Good value for the price though.

Amazing coincidence el-nudgo. Just put down my last glass of this an hour ago at my brothers house where we shared the bottle.
My comments are identical to yours. It is a fresh, slightly over acidic but don't forget a very young chardonnay. Minimal oak treatment if any and at the price, a good buy. It was quite smooth which impressed me after purchasing a similar Tomich Winemakers Reserve Pinot last year. That was absolute cordial and I gave them heaps at the winery for selling rubbish like that with a supposed rrp of $45. Reeeefund. But this chardy needs to sleep for a few years. It's probably a $20 to $25 proposition, so ultimately it gets a tick as a reasonable buy from the Fo. It certainly is no dud thankfully !

I'm absolutely of the same persuasion Rug, it's just that you obviously hadn't had the stinkers I have had of late and so, nil return rate. I do actually agonise a bit over whether I'm being too harsh/subjective but at the end of the day the VM entity is quite capable of wearing the return freight and flogging my discards to someone else, possibly in a "salvation case" but who's salvation?

Maybe the best comments I have read in a long while, but you have to love the fire and enthusiasm shown by all here. What's my favourite wine you ask - the next.

VM's salvation of course. Following opinions here I have avoided stuff like Think outside etc.

FWIW I've had the Moppity Lock and Key Shiraz from Cloudwine* and The Mike Press Shiraz not too long ago and both of which I thought were a bit over-hyped and neither of which I sent back because of the refund policy "All we ask is that the goods still be in a saleable condition, in original packaging and are not damaged. The refund is for the item only and does not include freight charges." I made a pact with myself that I wouldn't deal with a company that wouldn't cover return-freight as it is untenable when you live in a place like Tasmania to cover the cost as a consumer....(Starwine being another of the same ilk)

*had no real problem with Cloudwine but Starwine.....

Sounds fair to me. Lucky I live in Victoria

We're often held to ransom here in Tas compared to the "mainland", we don't have Dan Murphy's here either. I think if we had a larger more competitive liquor outlet like Dan M. my on-line purchases would start to dwindle, as it is, the two-bit players here on the whole have a fraction of the range and don't offer such attractive specials...

Sounds like a trip to the mainland on the overnight ferry, and load up the car. Hell, three cases of Glenlofty on the front left never looked so good as a passenger ! Sure to have folks amused.

This didn't even last 20 minutes to sell 20 cases of 6. But it was nice to get the email heads up.

Even if I've never bought a CS (even a blend) through VM.

30998101da6a6f68bb226df22fdf093d

almost as good/rare a deal as serrat last year :)

select DM stores have it for $78 per bottle ( Te Mata)

very select ie. most don't :(

~$90 at wine culture is otherwise perhaps the cheapest available

Bought this stuff I've been happy with over the past 12 months.

wow - just wondering how much wine you would roughly drink and buy in a year? and how much do you own overall?

on average i would probably drink/open 1-3 bottles a week, buy 1-2 dozen a month, and my cellar might have about 500 bottles

I'm a big fan of Mike Press. He markets his wines at an RRP that is the same as 60% off for the others, at the end of the day it's similar what comes out of your wallet...

I am too, bought some from MyCellars and most were a real hit at their ~$10 price

Looks like the mitolo 2006 Savitar is up at a good price. https://vinomofo.com/wines/red-wine/mof_-secret-deal-shiraz-2006-69ac3a54

I drunk my first bottle of the 2005 of this on Friday (I bought a six pack from VM a few weeks ago) and it it was really very good indeed. I reckon these Mitolo wines a ready for drinking now which is probably why Mitolo are getting rid of them. Also, the cork in my bottle had gone a bit soft and it disintegrated when I remove it from the bottle. I had to push a bit of it into the bottle which decanting properly ended up taking care of. This may be another reason they are offloading them on VM. My experience of the 2005 though is that it's an excellent wine at the peak of its power from an aging perspective. I will probably aim to drink my others before the winter's out given my slight concern regarding the longevity of the wine given the cork situation.

Had no issue with the cork in the one bottle of 2005 I've opened so far. 2006 was a much bigger wine for me:
