Vinomofo Wine Deals

Sorry for the change in topic, but how are most of you fine people storing your wine? I am in Tassie and I am still finding it hard to keep my cellar cool in the warmer months. I can only imagine how difficult you mainlanders in the hotter climates have maintaining 15-18*C storage conditions.
I am going to get a fridge soon for my more expensive drops but still have a few hundred decent wines that are currently sitting around 20*C which has been making me nervous for a while now.

20C if constant isn't going to kill your wine. Just dont expect any serious long term cellaring.

Previously I had a wine fridge (Liebherr 312 bottle capacity). That was living in an apartment. Now I have a cellar (being in Perth, not much is below ground) which is on the bottom level of a multi-story townhouse. The room has insulation installed and a wine cellar cooling system installed. Capacity is probably around 1100 bottles. Even with all that in place, there is some small increase in temp after several hot days and nights.

The other obvious solution is off-site storage. I decided that it was too inconvenient for me. Cooling costs in summer is a little under $2/day and well under $1/day in the cooler months.
 
Thanks for response Daver, well it does fluctuate with the seasons, in winter it seems to sit around 13-15...I might try and get some better insulation around it. Most wines are mid term cellaring but have around 2 dozen that are long term which will go in the fridge.

Seasonal variation while not ideal, is certainly better than daily temperature swings.
 
I look forward to your gsm review rocket.....btw , there is another on today. I would suspect the maverick to be better since it has been 'more nurtured' so to speak by the old timers running the place in the barossa. The other one, a sort of virtual contract effort, surely cannot have seen the full conception to birthing processes and inputs. Not saying it's going to be a bad one, but I think I would put my money on the Mav. Oh yes, there is an absolute stunner for sale today as well. the 2011 vic shiraz - it's the glenlofty, which i have a couple of cases. It;s been here before, but at under 8 bucks, a steal....this stuff is ridiculously good. And you know why. Because the mature folks who put it out used to sell their quality grapes elsewhere, but lo and behold, the 2011 was their first own bottling. Tell me like someone on a prom doesnt want to impress on the first night. That's what they did with this wine, in a tricky year as well.

Plenty of studies have shown biggest killler of wine is not actually the heat so much as fluctuation in temperature and in particular rapid fluctuations. I only have the ability to keep under 20c in mid summer but I manage to store wine for 8-10 years fine. Frankly I'm a bit over really old wine, its nice as a change but prefer most of my wine with say 3-5 years age and still with fruit showing.

Am not saying a 14c cellar vs a 20c will have no difference but youll pay a lot for that difference and only really notice if you are into really long term cellaring.

Yes I certainly look forward to trying it Beefarmer. And I also have 3 cases of the Glenlofty, well two and a half now, great drop for the price indeed!
 
Hi rocket09, just before going to our neighbours for dinner last night, i saw your posting and thought i better top up on the glenlofty, so after this case i think our stocks will be quite similar. yes, it's a great one. last night we had a 2006 Hope estate cab that i got from grays for under $4, and it was beautiful, as usual. It's story of being is an amazing one since it could have been the old virgin hills but relabelled due to an export order being cancelled. The second and this will surprise was a 2013 aldi wine, o'briens i think was the label, a west oz cab merlot. Pretty damn good at what my neighbour said cost just over a tenner. So without prejudice i drink all these wines and take them on their merit. Surprisingly good was the 2013 and may explain recently that aldi had some good reviews in a sydney show. But, the glenlofty is still a better one-as you would expect.

Hi beefarmer. Is the Glenlofty the Shiraz up today with 95 points and 5 gold medals?
 
I have a couple of vintecs. One if for long term cellaring - we do an audit annually and move anything ready to drink to our "everyday" Vintec which is a large one with zones for red and white. Works well for us.

We do regularly have overflow though that ends up on a rack near a brick wall (damn you good wine deals that I do not have the will to pass up!).

I bought a 2nd hand 140 bottle Vintec for $800 on Gumtree. Not sure how you can fit 140 bottles in but I would think they are all the same.

Like most things in life, you get what you pay for with wine fridges. They aren't cheap.
 
We're having similar storage issues. Most of it is currently living under the bed. Someone suggested an esky of sorts, but I doubt I can find one that fits ten cases of wine and still fits under the bed :oops:
