Vinomofo Wine Deals

Thanks for that impression of the Umamu, most of the time people on the forum talk about which wines they've bought recently but not necessarily any clue about what they actually tasted like once having landed - good or bad. I had a broker from one of the more "boutique" etailers cold call me on my mobile recently trying to interest me in the wine in question and I declined, sounds like I got it right...

No worries. I tend to be pretty late on the vinomofo deals so these days I lean on being conservative with the wines I keep, especially since I have regretted keeping cases in the past. I also figure that if it were that good that would have been more of a fuss made here and would have sold out earlier.

If I had cellared the Umamu from the start I might have been tempted to say that it has closed up and is going through a dumb phase and then hope it develops secondary characteristics to compensate for the loss of fruit, but right now I just don't think the wine is showing well and I am not willing to take a punt on a dozen.

Here are some more Vinomofo wines:

Grant Burge FIlsell - At $22 this looks the goods, especially the dramatic improvement overnight after airing. For comparison, at the same price I slightly prefer the Woodvale Woodberry 2014 Shiraz from Dan Murphy's, which I rate as a steal for drinking in the short term.

Thistledown Great Escape Chardonnay 2015: BLACK MARKET Chardonnay 2015 - $12.50 A take it or leave it wine for me. Tastes like a chardy, unfortunately that is the only impression it left.

Friday's Child RIesling 2015: BLACK MARKET Riesling 2015 - $10. Interesting nose, very developed. Palate has obviously lost fruit freshness and acidic line, compensated by some increased viscosity. My fellow tasters liked it and we thought it had oak! Good to keep a few bottles here but a whole dozen would be overwhelming. (HH review here: https://www.danmurphys.com.au/produ...001/fridays-child-fridays-child-riesling-2015)

Greenstone Heathcote Shiraz 2012: - BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2012: Nice development, a wine driven very much by acid on the back palate; good with food. Blown away by the Filsell so not worth the price at $25 for me. Also if you care, my bottles seemed like they were destined for an overseas market.

And for historic interest...

Terre a Terre Rouge 2015 - I think I mentioned this wine before and again it was very good drinking ($15) in the lighter, Cabernet Franc dominated style.

Redclaw Shiraz 2014 - Heathcote, massive sediment already. Has developed menthol/eucalypt/mint characteristics but palate is still a bit hollow at some points. I liked it, for the price, but everyone emphatically rejected it.

Grove Estate Partners Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 - A terrible wine at this point of its life. You could call it harmonious if you were charitable. I am hoping it turns the corner with a few more years in the cellar.

I actually have a couple of bottle of this left from an original purchase in 2014 @ $20pb. I've never liked it though, too lean and the acid doesn't sit well. No way close to a 96 pt wine, then or now.

This is Falcon Ridge. I've never tried it and can't find much on it to make any judgement but the price looks good. Available from winery for $45 curently down from the quoted $50 but that's from NZ.

Anyone snap this one up?
Yep, tried tonight. Bargain of the year for me, powerful pinot with chewy tannins. Wanted to buy more but sold out :[
Is $25 for the Rock Ferry a good price? Very tempted by this now I've my NZ pinot mojo on...

Rolf Binder Heysen Shiraz 2015 $42

Initially offered at $49.90, they reduced the price when I pointed out the $42 price at Summer Hill Wine Shop in Sydney.
Very good wine, tried it at the winery earlier this year.

The Shiraz Mataro caught my interest (Love a good mataro/blend)
Was hoping it might be the Adelina, as I just got the 2017 and love it.

Did a lot of searching and this is a looong shot, but possibly Big Easy Radio NEVER FAIL FALSE IDOLS 2016 SHIRAZ MATARO

The 'Cool Cats' reference led me to here and I got a hit on Big Easy Radio being a side project of Alpha Box & Dice (and a VM connection) form here. Trying to track down varietal %, but the RRP matches at $32 and also 14.5%alc. Definitely a brand VM have sold also.

Edit: yep 80/20% matches here, just no idea if it's any good ;)

Chonka, did you (or anyone else) end up trying this? You're definitely right about what it is (VM sell it as part of their 3 bottle welcome pack) and looks like it's back again:

Gets a score of 3.9 on Vivino.

I also like a Mataro or Mataro blend (Teusner The Independent is a nice drop).

No, never did end up trying it

One of my Forum members posted a TN, he liked it enough to go back for more.

Yes RB I guess you could say we're spoilt for choice! VM seems to be struggling a bit to attract the punters despite having some fairly decent discounts on some items, I've been dabbling in the odd off-piste offering and bought a sixer of the 2014 Charles Cimicky Trumps Shiraz but couldn't agree with Sarah Linhart on the Wine Collective site: "Old, raisined, warm hay and spice. Palate is better. There's still fruit hanging on in here." I sent them back and got a refund despite the knock-down price of $13.99, to me it tasted pretty average. I hadn't realised that Cracka and two others had combined forces under the WIne Collective banner, Financial Review had a good write up in March Wine Collective eyes growth as Dan Murphy's slows Anyway I hope the mods don't delete this as being off-topic, I think it's relevant :)

I've bought the II Associates Black Bay Shiraz 2016 after a good report from someone who bought it (haven't tried it yet), I liked the III Associates Sparkling Shiraz NV and went back for more, although one person didn't like it so much, also the Rolf Binder Heysen (for a friend) and the Thistledown Wizard and Farmer Shiraz 2018 ($25) that turned out better than expected.
But I've bought a lot more from Qantas Wines and Dan Murphy who are both being more ruthless these days. Maybe VM will come back if the EOFY frenzy stops soon, but I hear DM clearances will continue for a while, "Red Blends" supposedly starting the coming week.

The Vinomofo sales model doesn't allow a lot of room for extra "sale" discounts, free freight and 1-3 dollars a bottle off is about it and many people get free freight anyway, at least on Fridays if not all the time.

My Wine Guy started as an offshoot of Cracka, then Cracka bought another small company, then The Wine Society, re-branding as the Wine Collective recently, MWG still separate.

Sorry about the Financial Review link (just clicked on it and realised it was a pay for view), I'm not a subscriber but was somehow able to access it randomly in a google search and read it in full  Relevant bits below:
The Wine Collective will have a more nimble approach and has built strong supply relationships with brands including Vasse Felix, Jeanneret, Tahbilk, Geoff Merrill, Giant Steps and Tyrrell's.
Dan Murphy's bricks-and-mortar stores have suffered a slowdown in growth and the business, part of Woolworths' Endeavour Drinks division, is going through a strategic review. At Endeavour Drinks, sales increased 1.8 per cent but earnings fell 6.4 per cent in the first half of 2018-19 largely because of the drag of Dan Murphy's.
Mr Heinrich sees an opening for a smaller player which has spent months integrating the three businesses – The Wine Society, Cracka Wines and Wine Growers Direct – and officially takes the wraps off a revamped online operation on Monday.

Just a heads up, I'd suggest tucking into one within the return window. I grabbed some a while ago and the first couple I tried were flawed.
Care to expand on "flawed", that's a bit generic for me to understand?

The guy who recommended it has a palate I trust and tasted it in a regular Sydney tasting group set against some other well-regarded McLaren Vale Shiraz.
"McLaren Vale Wine Tasting.
There were 6 of us in the end, and it turned out to be a terrific tasting.

The scores are out of 60, and there was a surprise winner, thats still available at $25.

50.5 2016 3 Associates Black Bay shiraz.
Vinomofo special...My style of wine, young, fresh, syrupy, yummy oak, Mollydooker style, and its only $25. "

Interesting to hear that about the III Associates WM, especially considering that it's under stelvin. The last couple of cases I got from the 'Fo were the Botham Merrill Willis Shiraz 2013 and the Annie's Lane The Locals Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 both of which were more than acceptable but for some reason I haven't found myself hitting the boom button since then...

edit: RB pipped me at the post, now that I've read that it resembles a Mollydooker I'm yet again sorely tempted, not that I need more wine under the house at the moment

My notes suggested it was a deeply frustrating wine, in the sense that it had those big full bodied fruit characteristics (in the manner you expect from a III Associates wine) but was thrown out of whack by an underlying sourness & lack of length. Suspect volatile acidity, but I'm far from a wine professional so take that with a grain of salt. Either way, it killed off the pleasure enough to see them returned.
