Vinomofo Wine Deals

I can't speak to the 2015, but I bought a case of the 2014 earlier this year. Kept 6, with the other 6 split around the family.

I enjoy durif, and this is an enjoyable wine. Reasonably full bodied and fruit driven, and definitely opens up nicely after an hour or three, but it lacks that punch and depth that I usually look for in a straight durif. It's not a patch on their Ballerina Canopy Durif, but definitely a much better drop than a De Bortoli Vat 1, so I guess that makes it good value for the VM asking price.

I have 2 of them left, and plan to hang on to them for a few years to see how they go. From my very vague and inconsistent notes, I appear to have enjoyed the last bottle (just last week) much more than I did the first!

Thanks for the detailed breakdown, that's exactly why I wanted someone to respond! I'll probably pass on this offer, the durif I've had in the past has had bigger cojones than the Gapsted by the sound of it...

Agreed, thanks. Hubby's the durif fan, and he likes it to be punch you in the face bold. So I'll pass as well until someone else actually has a bottle in hand to say.

I got some of the Blass at $20/bottle in an eBay sale from Grey's. (At that price it is decent, not the best red I've had at that price point but a quality, medium bodied wine that is unlikely to disgrace you in any company - present company included. It improves with breathing and probably has decent cellaring potential.) If you wanted to buy some without waiting, you'd probably find it at $25 through one online retailer or another.

I got 6 of the Wolf Blass at $20 via that eBay sale and tried one. It's so beautifully balanced that it's approachable now, but also has the structure to last 15 years. Halliday says drink before 2042, but I'm sure mine won't be here that long. :)

It looks like you can still get them at that price now with the 20% off coupon, highly recommended by me at that price.

I wasn't intending to damn with faint praise but just realised that my comments do look a bit like that in retrospect. It is indeed a very good wine. It didn't wow me simply because its flavour profile was nothing unusual to me (which I wouldn't expect at $20 but which is something I'd be after at the mooted RRP), but it is admirably well made, very tidy and as you pointed out, very approachable right now.

Had my six pack of the Handpicked Collection Tassie Pinot Noir delivered and cracked one last night. At just $30 a bottle from VM It didn't disappoint at all. Delicate with a gamey complexity and enough summer fruits to provide great balance. Enjoyed it more than the '13 Seppelt Drumborg Pinot noir hat I also bought recently as this wine is a bot more balanced. Would recommend this if it pops up again and may buy more myself.
I like your very apt description of perhaps many pinots.....gamey complexity and balanced with summer fruits. I myself prefer the summer fruits to dominate, but I do understand the gameness or sometimes what's known as forest floor characters to come through. A tinge of bitterness can also encroach but balance is what we are all after. Nice comments dude.

Agreed. Your trademark, decent but reasonably low priced Pinots from The Yarra, (I'm thinking the standard Coldtream Hills, Hoddles etc) are always fruity and light. I like this component but to elevate a good Pinot to a very good -> great one it has to have that depth of finish the delicate nuance, the hint of spice, wisp if cigar, essence of Turkish delight. I could go on....

Nothing on JH website any where near this price range from SA.

My best guess from having a quick look is the Kilikanoon Baudient Blend GSM 2012

Seems like something in the VM ad must be incorrect, but palate notes, price, region, and alcohol all match. The halliday rating does not, however, front page says 92 but without the Halliday signature (all other ads always show the signature of who it's from). Wondering if the halliday award inside is just a template. It did receive a 92 rating (just not from JH).

Bit rich for my blood V50 (speaking price wise) not that I wouldn't happily dive into it, but what about the https://vinomofo.com/wines/red-wine/the-islander-estate-the-red-shiraz 2014? no mystery but does anyone know it's lineage?

Got this little snippet on-line but mentions the 2014 as being Malbec and Cab Franc not Shiraz as cited on VM:
The Red (RRP $20.00)The Red 2012 is the fourth release of our house red and continues to showcase the best from Kangaroo Island in a modern Australian red blend. The 2014 vintage is a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Franc. On the nose, you will find notes of toasted vanilla and soft black cherries with a hint of stewed plums and mulberries. It's supple and well balanced on the palate, with fine integrated tannins and a generous round mouth feel, leading to a long lingering finish.

But... the vineyards own site emphatically says that it's a Shiraz (thanks Wineboss!) I'd hardly call Padthaway an island....

Dunno where you got that note, but from the winery itself:

Straight shiraz.

If you had read my post more thoroughly you would have seen that I had already mentioned that it was a straight shiraz, the site it came from is this one: https://www.wineboss.com.au/Order.aspx?ref=p9p

Fact of the matter is that VM have given any unsuspecting punter the general impression that this wine emanates from Kangaroo Island despite the "Padthaway SA" labelling, All aboard mof_s, we’re sailing away to a remote outpost in South Australia that’s renowned for first class shiraz. Here you’ll find captain Jacques Lurton, a talented winemaker who’s been happily shipwrecked on Kangaroo Island for nearly 20 years. He runs a tight ship in his small, closely planted vineyard to ensure yields are low, fruit quality is high and the wines are tasty. And if this juicy, red berry, and spice laden beauty is anything to go by, you’ll want drop the anchor and never leave ‘The Islander’.

I tell you what's incorrect and that is the threesome intimation of the VM advertising. I was all set for a bit of S and M, but then they threw in the G. I can hear them now, Bring Out The Gimp. Monsieur, how do you like your liquor?
Hopefully the wine is nice.

To catch your ear if I could WanD thru all that undergrowth, let me just say that the capital input needed to purchase 12 at $10 or 6 at $20 is the same. But this is where it getz fuzzy. Personally I would expect the dearer to be at least twice as good in quality. Is this a fair assumption? I believe it is, so do some due diligence on the dearer ones and buy those. With the generous refund policy, it's a lot easier returning a six pack as well. Whatdyareckon WandD? Sage advice?

I suspect they carelessly used the Josh Raynolds 92 score for the Halliday score (see the Awards and Accolades tab in the page linked above). The Gold medal and Trophy match.
