Vale AFF member - Penegal

As usual @Bundy Bear is on the money. I first met Mark (@penegal ) at AFF gathering #4 in 2010 in Brisbane :)

You're right @Bundy Bear , he joined Flyertalk in May 2009 as well. Seems longer than 16 years.

The most shocking and devastating news I’ve received in a long time. Mark was a good friend very generous one too. Ever since I moved out of MEL we tried to maintain a ritual of catching up at least once a month during my visits, always sharing good meal and fine wines. Just the other day we set the date for our next catchup and then to hear that he’s gone is truly unbelievable.

@kpc rang me this afternoon and we shared our memories of Mark. We think we both met him at Ozfest 3 (the one that I organized), so it’s been 20 years. We then reminisced that when he was the last person on board the bus in Alice Springs (another Ozfest) , I had gone to his room to find him stumbling to the door, opening it bleary eyed and apologizing he’d slept through his alarm (assuming he’d set one 🤷‍♂️). I helped him pack and get down to the bus (after checking out). Remember he wore his glasses on the bus all day.

Like most here, a trip to MEL always meant contacting him to see if he’s was in town. Generally meant an evening drink, or meal and a bottle or two and not just us - he could corral a group at short notice . Too many times I was a bit dusty and hadn’t had enough sleep at client meetings or work functions the next day.

In more recent years, when he was at Deloittes, we’d meet for a coffee / hot chocolate. We’d spoken about some of his health challenges but he was still the same ol’ Mark.

I’m going to miss him. @kpc and I brought up those who’ve gone before us. Now have to add him to the list
QF WP and all - so saddened to hear this news.
I vividly remember that Alice Springs day.
Vale Penegal.
Too young.

It is so sad to read all these posts but I'm heartened to see and learn that Mark was so liked and loved by so many here on AFF and on social media.
I had to remind myself not to scroll Facebook or AFF yesterday at work.

Had I done so, I may not have (professionally) made it through the day.

But as you said, it is a testament to the man and who he was to all of us, every message was deserved.

I’m now pretty certain I saw @penegal at one of the Brisbane meetings in 2009/10. I took part in the golf at those times. In 2010 I also attended the lunch at Breakfast Creek. Most people at the lunch probably saw me as I hadn’t changed after golf and I was wearing my famous golf shorts.
Unfortunately I was unaware of the chance of meeting Penegal. If I had I most certainly would’ve attended more Melbourne events.

I've been trying to work out when I first met Penegal. While it was around 2010, I am not 100% sure which event it was. I was certainly at Breakfast Creek for drron's fashion show, so maybe it was then.

Over the years, we crossed paths many time in Melbourne when I was based in Docklands. Was always good to see him around.

As per this post with the attendee list, it was AFF gathering #4 in Bne in 2010 where I also met him for the first time :)

I changed computers 18 months ago and a lot of photos are still on external drives, lost or dates have gotten wrong when importing however I knew if I did a bit of digging I would find at least a couple.

Post edited and photos re ordered from the original post as I found the dates and they were different catch ups, have attempted to align with what I posted above.

This was the catch up when Mark had provided the make shift decanters. I know what I brought along, both Mark and another in the photo also knew what I was planning to bring and mentioned some those will need decanting. For the record I did not provide all in the photo. Another on the same night showed up with Grange.

Mark is front left and out of focus. This was the catch up I was late too with the Accor wine that Mark never let me live down, the bottom right may be the Accor wine, Mark had banned it from general photos. At some point he asked me to hold it and took a photo, when I asked why the reply was - so next time we catch up I can send you this as a reminder never to bring such cough again. Also the decanters are back.

Latest phone updates didn't bring all the photos across so I had to go into the computer.

I have included some photos of other AFF members that have passed away.

I have a few more but I think this will be enough for now.

I will miss you Mark
