Have accepted the request for the new card, however will not activate it unless there is some value with it... could end up being a "claytons" credit card in my drawer not wallet ;)

Whether in your drawer or your wallet, it's still not a credit card ;).

Hence the "claytons" in quotes...

Let me google that for you

the name has entered into Australian and New Zealand vernacular where it represents a "poor substitute" or "an ineffective solution to a problem". It can also be used to describe something that is effectively in existence but does not take the appropriate name

Fair call :p. My eyes skipped that bit. Having said that, although familiar with the usage, I did not know the origin of the 'Claytons' term so the wiki article was most informative.

It will be interesting to see if this card is added as a means of payment for flights that doesn't incur the service fee (on that note, I see the long dormant 'Virgin Australia' rep is viewing... ).

I got the email at 2:30pm yesterday. I've requested it, but obviously won't activate it until all details have been announced.

The one good thing about stored value cards is the ability to load foreign currency when the rates are in your favour. I have a GBP card that I have loaded cash on at various times this year when the rate has been good (eg around 0.68/$1AUD).

Could be just a screwed up mailing list? I know someone who has 500 points and hasn't flown them in a year got the email!

1500 points and one flight in ~6 years and I got the email this morning.

Hmmm, interesting.

I've already got a Velocity card. In fact, this year I'll have 3 (was red, just got silver, will be gold at the end of August hopefully).

I've got my bank's Visa card as well as the Virgin Money Flyer card.

So I'm wondering if this card is worth it or not. I'll be traveling to the US, Japan & Singapore Jan/Feb 2014.

Does anyone know if the exchange rate is live rates like the visa/mastercard live rate when loading the card amount at that point?
Or does the issuer e.g. banks make about 5c different compared to the live rate at that point in time?

I quit using the CBA Travel Money back then due to the unfavourable lock in rates at the point of loading as it was not live rate and there was a 5c margin per dollar when loading.

I had a look around but seems that one need to have the card and log in to the card to see the exchange rate upon loading.

I can't understand the enthusiasm for this or other travel money cards. Perhaps it's because I have a Citibank Plus account as my every day transaction and overseas ATM withdrawals / purchases are already fee free and at great exchange rates.

It's all about locking in the exchange rate when it's high. Would you prefer to be spending a USD that cost you 99c if you'd bought it a couple of months ago or one that Citibank will sell you today for $1.10?

I did not know the origin of the 'Claytons' term .

Really? Seems like yesterday they ran those ads - ad nauseum you might say.

Email just arrived in my inbox, card should be with me by month's end - I pre-registered...
Shame it didn't come sooner, 1 Point per $1 would have been great for all experiences I'll rack up in New Zealand over this weekend while I'm over there.

Pretty much this!

28 degrees is a no brainer if you want to avoid a generally poor exchange rate and then a % commission...

Some Amex cards give you 2 points per $1 spent overseas... For me I value this at about 7-9cents per dollar spent and it covers the fees/currency conversion so I am happy enough to stick with this

As for the Virgin card, I doubt it will offer anything above what I am already getting, except maybe at launch

Hey can someone link me to the 28' degrees Product, I can't find it ?

Thanks

Travel Card with No International Fees - 28 Degrees MasterCard

I do NOT recommend using this Credit Card for cash withdrawals - it is not designed for that. Get 28 Degrees Card for overseas purchases, and also get Citibank Plus for overseas cash withdrawals. Benefits are
- two cards should one get locked/stolen/compromised
- you are using the products as designed
- no risk of 28 Degrees/GE Money deciding to "cash out" any over payments and send you a cheque whilst you're overseas.
- no fees at all
