Happened upon shocking footage of a TransAsia Airways crash on Facebook earlier today. While I realise Gawker probably isn't the best news site, it does aggregate a few images and videos together. Seems to lose height and bank quite suddenly.

I'm in Taipei at the moment and the aircraft passed over our office building in Neihu just after takeoff. Latest toll saying 12 dead and 30 missing.

Likewise, Apple Daily is not the most reliable news outlet, but there are some interesting images and flight path screenshots.

There's also a photo of the taxi which got hit in the dashcam footage, driver and passengers not seriously injured but they were extremely lucky.

Glad to hear that you are okay.

That close up dash cam shot is just amazing - rivals that cargo plane (747) video.

Any survivors are lucky. How that didn't turn over (either as it clipped the roadway or afterwards) is beyond me.

Amazing that the guy with the dash cam was able to keep driving in a relatively straight line and not crash himself.

Reports are that one engine had ceased operating and that the flaps on LH wing had not retracted?

Amazing footage of such a tragic event.

Off topic, but an editors note on AV Herald was just added today on that incident: Crash: National Air Cargo B744 at Bagram on Apr 29th 2013, lost height shortly after takeoff following load shift and stall

Hopefully not part of a wider problem affecting the ATR's, otherwise VA wont be in a good position.

I assume the top image is the route of the crash and the bottom image the usual route?

Having seen the video, it seems like a small miracle that there are any survivors at all.

My thoughts with those involved and their families.

This is the early speculation in the Chinese-language media based on aviation experts' analysis of the video. Of course in no way conclusive at this stage.

Yes, that's pretty much the flight path most of the turboprop aircraft take heading out of Songshan, as most will be heading to Magong (MZG) or Kinmen (KNH) which are the opposite direction to takeoff, hence the gradual turn

Poor buggers, all that concrete and freeway piers as well.

In the OP, the propeller closest to the ground seems to have stopped spinning compared to the other one.

If the LH flaps had not retracted, I'd expect it would have rolled the other way. It looks like a Vmca event. Looking at the readout of height and speed surprises me, as an ATR should be able to climb away with an engine failure. I'd be interested in whatever the propellor was doing. It still seems to be turning, but has it feathered (or started to)?

Must admit I'm amazed that there are survivors.

Cripes .. did you notice how the wing just clipped the front of the minivan in front. Another nanosecond and there would have been additional casualties.

In the dailytelegraph.com.au today:

“Flame-outs” occur when the flame that normally burns in the engine goes out, causing engine failure. Twin-engined planes are usually able to fly on one engine.

Learn something new everyday. There is a flame burning in internal combustion engines...

looks like the taxidriver was milliseconds on the right side of luck
