Tokyo (HND & NRT) Stopover Tips

You may be right. I may go to one of the four OW lounges - JL, AA, QF, CX - to shower and then clear immigration to get away into town.Somewhere in this thread there's link to return fare of Yen 4,070 - a bit over aud50. That together with lunch will be better than hotel spend.

The red Narita Express "Nex"
It still Y4070 round trip. Japanese reliable and comfortable.
About 1 hr each way. But leave yourself about 3 hrs for transportation.

Shibuya, Ginza

Alternatively (and a reminder to myself) visit Narita Old Town instead of Tokyo. Only 10 minutes from NRT.

Thanks very much. Is Nex ticket bookable on arrival?

I have been to Narita township several times. Had lunches in restaurants down the winding road to the temple, harder to walk back during snow.

I look forward to visiting Tokyo itself.

NEX is a shuttle, no need to book. Just walk up to NEX counter and buy a seat for next available. The seat is reserved = you get a specific seat number.

This looks like fun:

Starbucks’ year-round digital flora
Sarah Buckley

Starbucks will open on March 19 inside the west-Tokyo garden, Hana Biryori greenhouse, run by a large, Japanese amusement park, Yomiuriland.
With 1,500 sqm of greenery, digital projections alongside sound shows will incorporate on-site flowers and its atmosphere to create an immersive sonic-audio experience. With four to six shows on per day, each beginning once the café goes dark.
The site has 20 projectors and 18 speakers, with the spectacle covering a total length of 60 metres.
Featuring colourful flower chandeliers and a flora and fauna celebration including begonia, fuchsia, petunia, geranium and bellflower, the greenhouse will further boast an on-site otter enclosure.
There are also rotating workshops to create your own moss terrarium, bottle aquarium or flower arrangement.
Alongside 1,200 fish, there are 50 different species swimming amidst two sizable aquariums set up across the vast space.

Once Coronavirus settles down, I’ll be heading back to Japan and this sounds worth a look!

What’s Ginza like if you have no interest in high level brand shopping? I just found a new Aloft hotel which happens to have a special rewards point offer for exactly the amount of points that I have in my account. I found Shibuya was great for a first time short visit.

If I recall correctly there was an art supply store there we enjoyed as well as a wonderful dessert restaurant. Need to write up that TR!

Hi

We have a stopover in HND on our way to HEL in late Dec 2021

Arrive HND at 16:00 and depart the next day HND at 11:35

Have never been to Tokyo before and was wondering where we should stay and what should we do?

Have a heap of Hilton Honors points so would like to stay at a Conrad or Hilton.

Thanks

One option with that short time I would go to Shibuya and have a walk around and look at those main tourist sites that you often see in the movies (the huge pedestrian crossing), and soak in the atmosphere. There is also a major store to check out the bowing as you enter and look at out the beautiful expensive fruit that they sell and, and just generally people watch.

That sounds like a good plan.

What would be the best Conrad or Hilton to stay at?

I haven’t stayed at either but if I were to I would look for the one closest to Shibuya station due to time shortage. And / or, the one that has only one subway, w’ no charges from HND. The Tokyo subway system is complex so make it as simple as you possibly can. Tokyo Metro | Subway Map

Also, this is quite a good thread in general for getting a few tips.

I'm looking at booking a J reward MEL-NRT HND-JFK in July, wondering if this is just a non-starter given the uncertainty with Japan and needing to transit through Tokyo... any advice? Thinking of booking it and making the call later!

I have an F reward four day visit to Tokyo next May. The way I look at it is anything could happen so book it and see what happens. Just book it online.

Your tips for spending 10 hours at HND (T3) during a day? I have a connection there (arrive in the morning, continue in the evening) with access to the JAL lounge but that gets old pretty quickly (though the Red Suite in the First Lounge is very cosy).
What else is there to do in the terminal? Any secret outdoors spaces one can visit to get some fresh air, any hidden little art somewhere, or other interesting spots?

When are you travelling?

It's not possible currently to enter Japan during a transit. We're all hoping though that this will change in the coming months. 🤞

The other half and I have an overnight stop in HND in Feb next year. 8pm arrival and 11.30am departure the next day.
It looks like the Royal Park Hotel is open for bookings but at the moment only as far forward as November.

I know few have probably visited in the last few years but is this normal to not be able to book this far out? Any tips, or room recommendations?

I'm going through in couple of weeks and that's why I'm asking how to maximise the activities at the terminal because I'll be stuck there for that half day.

I see.

I had a ~15 hour layover in HND in 2020 and couldn't leave the airport, so mostly just stayed in the ANA lounge and did some laps of the terminal.

Paging @madrooster and @scoobs214 who might have some tips.
