Time for Qantas Finally to Dump Neil Perry? Rockpool Engaged in Massive Wage Theft (alleged)

I had a Rockpool meal earlier this week at a function at their Alfred Place corporate rooms in Melbourne. I am pretty sure NP didn't cook it personally but I'd sack whoever did. No loss to Qantas if they bite the bullet.

Have I missed something, how has @drron become the bad guy, I have met him and his wife, they are both nice. Quote below, I have also abandoned QF for the same reason.
I was just wanting to know why @drron dislikes Paul Barry. Wasn't any more than that and I respect his call to not to elaborate. Genuine conversation from my part, I hope, albeit off topic. Not tense either, just good conversation, I also hope.

Perhaps we can steer the chat towards whether anyone will notice if Neil Perry is dumped by QF?

More than happy for QF to dump Neil. The days of QF food riding on what was once reasonable/acceptable Neil meals is well and truely over. Just my opinion.

I certainly took it as a conversation with no malice at all.A shame if people with different opinions can't do that.

And I agree back to Neil Perry. On that front although I would love to see him dumped by QF i really am yet to be convinced he is one of the bad guys here.Although the article says that this has been going on for years so implicating NP himself the only case completed so far was for matters after NP had sold out.But then the Rockpool group decided voluntarily to pay compensation going back several years.May be a very good way to deflect criticism especially as they are on record as wanting to float the Rockpool group.

I went to Rockpool at The Rocks in the first few years and it was an outstanding meal. Ever since he has been involved at QF I have never been able to see a connection between the restaurant dining experience and the mediocre (at best) airline meals. In the last 2 years I have had quite a few J meals on QF, AY and CX and QF comes a long way last. Even AY intra-Europe meals on an A320 beat what I was recently servied on a QF747.

However, I want NP to get the flick for the rubbish meals he puts his name to, not because some venture capitalists have srewed over the employees from his former business. On the other hand, if it is later found he has been involved in dodgy wage practices, he should join George Calombaris in exile.

While that is all well and good, it ignores the fact that Qantas is closely connected with the entire Rockpool Group, not just NP, as I pointed out earlier. Qantas' website is littered with references to their 'Rockpool sommeliers' and 'Rockpool recipes' in their lounges and on board. Thus, if Rockpool is engaged in illegal and immoral practices, Qantas should dump them immediately.

No argument with that, was thinking more of the person with the pony tail who I assume actually does have some influence on the menus. Hard to separate the man from the business I agree, and happy for all the connections with Rockpool Group to be dropped on the basis of the wage fraud.

Certainly not on Domestic in any class.

So what is Neil Perry's actual relationship to Qantas? I dare say its not much more than a licencing agreement to use the name in certain contexts.

Mr Perry's company agrees that Qantas may label their cuisine "Neil Perry inspired" etc for appropriate consideration.
Qantas agrees that it will label the dishes attributed to Mr Perry's inspiration such that the average punter wouldn't know what they are ordering
Mr Perry's company in turn agrees to supply Mr Perry for a certain number or certain number of hours of Qantas promotional events and agrees to always support the Qantas brand.

Not much to do with kitchens, at all.

Qantas might be concerned that when Mr Perry sold his previous business, he didn't take steps to protect his various brand names (by inserting various prohibitions or obligations in the contract of sale), or at least have recourse if those brands are tarnished. (But then, perhaps he did and does.)

While not a fan of NP inspired meals. I’m not sure pillorying NP is good journalism, when clearly the “money” runs things while he is a front man. Or do I have that wrong?

Of course not. Did anyone ever seriously think NP is standing in a warehouse by a conveyor belt helping make thousands of economy meals each day LOL?

All these sorts of arrangements exist first and foremost as a branding exercise to boost the reputation of Qantas' food and wine offerings.

Therefore, as I mentioned several times on this thread, now that Rockpool's reputation and, by extension, NP's are set to be heavily tarnished, perhaps it is time for Qantas to sever ties.

Put succinctly, if Rockpool and NP become a bad brand, why would Qantas continue using them to help boost their own brand?

Maybe Rugby Australia should call AJ and suggest they cancel NP's contract, and slap a life ban on him ever stepping foot on a QF tube again ..... due to the enormous damage this is doing to RA's brand :p

Edit - is it even possible to damage RA's brand anymore than it currently is❓:)

That wasn't what I was meaning, but given that he inevitably appears in a kitchen setting when he speaks for Qantas, I reckon a whole swag of people might think that he has some personal involvement of the meal design and/or presentation, at least. Otherwise, what's the point?

No, I don't think it is possible.

I have always interpreted "Neil Perry" as a brand (like Rockpool), not really a person, from a Marketing perspective. Sure, there is a person named that who had a hand in creating that brand at the start, but that doesn't mean that everything that comes out of it now, actually has that person's involvement. I think that's an important distinction (brand vs person) and something that should always be thought about for "celebrity" endorsements.

I don't mind the qantas domestic economy salad meal option. The hot option is usually like good quality dog food scooped into a box. But the salads are usually ok.

Not sure if those are neil perry salads...
