Just saw a 10 news story with the CEO of Tiger saying they will launch an airfare war tomorrow with fares from $15.

He said the only way for prices "was down" and Australians are paying too much for their airfares.

I'll have a dig around and see if I can find some articles or press releases.

Was about to start booking my next 7 domestic flights, might hold off til tomorrow and see what DJ & QF respond with....

any thoughts.. it should be worth waiting for - I am pretty flexible with travel times (not so on dates though)

They've been quiet for a while. If you believe some of the chatter at pprune.org, all may not have been going well in the area of staff recruitment. However there are always 2 sides to these sorts of stories.

Exactly my thoughts- JQ will definitely respond (doubt they'll match though) and it will be interesting to see what effort QF and DJ make.

Looks like I might be making some frivolous trips over the next few months. ;) :p

$15+++ or $15 - big differences :)

I like the fact that Tiger are entering the Domestic run, will help with airfares to certain domestic routes they fly.

I enjoy competition with airlines. It's a pity there isn't more competition in the marketplace.

I have been told that Tiger have problems with their web site and it's difficult, if not impossible to book an Oz Dom flight using it.

Can any confirm or discredit this?

Yeah, I had the exact same thoughts Mal. Given they already offer $49 on some sectors though, that can't be more than $15+++ already so we should get a semi decent offer. When JQ launched, fares were $29 all-in. I would hope (even though its a couple of years later) that fares were lower than this given all the hype there has been in the market.

Fares are now up:

Melbourne-Gold Coast $14.95
Melbourne-Launceston $14.95

Melbourne-Mackay $24.95
Melbourne-Rockhampton $24.95
Melbourne-Sunshine Coast $24.95

* Buy between 17 Sep and 23 Sep 07, or until seats sell out. Fly from 23 Nov 07 to 18 Mar 08. Limited availability only. Flights to/from Melbourne are subject to regulatory approval. Conditions apply.

Thanks Futaris, they're great prices. DJ, JQ or QF haven't gone on sale yet. Could be an interesting day. :p

I only get the $14.95 fares showing up for OOL->MEL and not the other way around. Sold out already perhaps?

They're all there at $14.95, it's generally only available on flights that are less desirable, eg saturday.

Anyhow, Jetstar have responded:

Jetstar - Cheap Flights

Melbourne - Gold Coast $14
Melbourne - Launceston $9
Melbourne - Sunshine Coast $24

01 - 29 May 08

Sorry for being naive but what is the point of a sale for May 2008 now?

I think most people would just buy tickets for the thrill of getting a cheap airfare rather than for any specific reason. And if you happen to be busy and can't go at the time of the trip then no big deal just cancel the ticket or not show up.

Well I must be mad, I can't get a single MEL->OOL flight for $14.95 for any day. :S
And I could swear that the JQ sale was for May and I was searching may flights and now its for February and the prices are so much higher.

They haven't launched the sale officially, but the fares should be loaded. It just maybe that you're getting that page off a different Jetstar server.

I see, thanks for that.
Any help with the Tiger fares? I'm trying to get a same day or next day return for $30 - any chance of that between Fri and Mon?

Little chance of getting a OOL-MEL vv same day return for $30, but you may get lucky. Probably Feb is the best time to try, since most people don't travel in Feb, and that's why the sales are on. You may have to book mid-week.

Thanks, futaris.

By the way, here goes Jetstar again with its: Unable to process transaction

I think it'spart of the Tiger model. Cheap sale fares are generally way out in the future somewhere (where they can put a reasonable amount of seats on). Clsoer to the time when more seats have sold, no need to sell such cheap seats,

Just a thing the Tiger Airways T&C caught my eye:

"Anyone above the age of 14 but below the age of 18 years may be accepted for carriage unaccompanied with a signed indemnity form at the point of check-in at each departure airport by a parent or a guardian. Parents and guardians must remain at the airport until the departure of the flight. Prevailing laws of each country may differ in respect of the carriage of unaccompanied children."

If I'm 16, does that mean I cannot check in (and then fly) unaccompanied if I turned up at the airport alone?
