The first post-“Tiger says G’day” email marketing campaign, hit Australian inboxes this morning. Tiger is offering flights PER-SIN for S$21.52 (around A$18) plus taxes etc, only problem is, their web booking engine is broken, so all the clicks they are generating are in vain. Here’s the message on Welcome to Tiger Airways (P.S. I believe PHP has a simple error suppression method…)

Warning: main(http://127.0.0.1/skylights/cgi-bin/skylights.cgi?module=SB&page=COMPACT): failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 502 Proxy Error in /files0/apps/tiger/doc-root/_includes/omnibar.inc.php on line 18

Well… the booking engine is up, but I certainly can’t find availability at the advertised prices! (12 random dated return PER-SIN trips searched +/- 1 day on each date) (Taxes/Charges/Fees are about A$250 on top of any fares.)

Qantas is currently quoting A$927 lead in price for PER-SIN return, some of the better deals I did find on Tiger were just over half that price, even if I didn’t find the lowest advertised price.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Same - did a random date - August 07 - cheapest was $54 - which in fact is pretty low...

Are they allowed to advertise ex-tax prices in Australia.

I found this in oct when i was looking to go

haven't tried for the return leg probaly try to come back through Darwin.

Availability has improved significantly, I am now getting return fares for under A$300 (total), usually for the day after or before the dates that I am looking at.

(And to clarify my previous post, the A$250approx, taxes/charges/fees is for a return trip PER-SIN.)

has qf or j* or sq responded with any sales ?

Personally, I wouldn’t expect SQ or QF to respond by lowering their fares. TR would appear to have quite a different product to either legacy carrier, and –
  • TR is (half)SQ’s LCC, so I guess SQ isn't going to take it on price-wise.
  • QF has Jetstar (either domestic or (half)Asian) A320’s it would be able to move onto the PER-SIN route, if it was feeling under pressure, rather than reducing its prices.
Although, both legacy carriers, continue to promote their pre-existing (inclusive) “sale” fares at –
  • QF “Singapore Sale” = A$927 return
  • SQ “Autumn Take Off Fares” = $870 return
As from today, I think the time has passed when those sorts of fares can be advertised as “sales” !

QF has recently had some lower fares. A few weeks ago return fares for May were available for around $650.

No, advertised retail prices in Australia must include the taxes by law.

Well, someone needs to tell Tiger, because they're not doing it.

Also, I'm looking to purchase a fare SIN-SYD in Jul, and on the basis of what I've seen on their website, it won't be Tiger.

Bit of a con job, actually. But Australians will generally pay above the odds anyway.

yes they are.

The legislation/law states that Australian Domestic airfares (where the origin and destination are within Australia) my be shown with prices inclusive of all surcharges fees and taxes

However international airfares are allowed to be shown exclusive of surcharges, fees and taxes.

Take a look at Virgin blue if you try to book a flight to NZ from MEL it will be shown exclusive of taxes with the taxes being added on later same with JQ. however Qantas shows international airfares inclusive of all taxes.

Surprisingly AirNorth advertise their domestic routes exclusive of all taxes

I think its great that QF price everything inclusive even on international (still give you a breakdown though), good on them for starting a good trend !

Interetsing JQ didn't on there international last time i looked (if i remember correctly)

Unless you fly from outside Australia.

NZ - I believe fares are ex charges.
SIN - Ditto.

They're only pretty angels because they realise they can't get away with it from Australia. From overseas? It's open slather.

And how do we define "advertised in Australia"? Is that advertised to an Australian market? Or advertised for sale to an Australian customer? Does the ACCC or any Australian advertising laws or guidelines apply to a foreign company marketing their product to Australian and processing the sale outside Australia? I am not sure what the legality is for this situation.

Yup. !#@$ annoying. Compare with NZ, EK etc all tax inclusive and have to go through several screens to get the equivalent QF fare. :(

I don't know about a false start, when they first announced PER-SIN flights my wife & I jumped on the bandwagon and got the $19+tax return flights. The arrival time into Singapore is horrid but it saved us over a grand. I can live with that.

Unless you purchase sale fares from Tiger their regular airfares are much more expensive than QF.

I just looked at a return flight SIN-PER departing 19 April and returning 15 July and it priced at S$680.

On the QF website the same dates priced at S$621!

Thats comparing a regular Tiger fare with a QF sale fare thats available for sale until early April. Of course QF have not offered the same level of fares for those wanting an ex PER departure as opposed to Ex SIN.
