As for the type of people. I've stayed in MANY caravan parks (maybe that proves the point). At OLP, at Port Augusta in need of a sleep before driving onwards, at darwin when the value inn wasn't available. Nothing wrong with caravan parks and you can get great value for money. Same with backpackers that often individual rooms with ensuite - basic, cheap, functional.
I just keep thinking of 'My Name Is Earl' :!: ;)

Not sure where I am going with this ramble, but my comment was not meant to be degrading.

I didn't understand it as being degrading. Demographics just work out to be that way. And of course its not all of the passengers on TT are first-timers or - to take a phrase from The Simpsons - slack-jawed yokels. Some of them could be flying QF for what we care.

I find it a bit unusual that one would or might choose a carrier based on demographics, but whatever......

Travel on aircraft is 95% of the time more than a mere means of getting from AAA to BBB. This is why we harp on a lot about service. What constitutes "good" service varies by airline and sometimes how much you paid for the ticket.

Drama at MCY Sunday 2/8.Got this email from mrsdrron who was flying DJ-
"So in the maroochy airport yesterday, there was a family of 5 (4 adults 1 baby) waiting on the tiger flight to melbourne, obviously it was overbooked and they were bumped, the check in girl told them the next plane was WEDNESDAY - you should have heard the comotion ! the men had to be at work monday - so they had to go and try and get on the deathstar flight later that arvo - drama just like the tv show !!!"
All I can say is why risk it.

I'm surprised TT would heavily overbook.

With so little aircraft at your disposal why would you even try. Unless you had a bump policy which included possibly paying for flights on alternative carriers.

Not that i'd fly them for any money, but it always surprises me watching the pax who have been bumped due to overselling of the flight that they give up so easily...if it were me, nothing short of either A. Getting me on the flight or B. them organising and paying for another carrier to take me would suffice...none of this 'you can travel tomorrow and we'll give you a $50 voucher for your troubles'...get real, never accept the first offer is always my rule for any negotiation.

If I had complied with all the requirements, I too would be very difficult to shift in this regard. I don't know what the fine print says but maybe they would get us on that. Ultimately, a raised eyebrow, or voice level raised just half a decibel from you would probably get the "I'll have to call security if you continue to act in a threatening and intimidating manner Sir" treatment. The deck is definitely stacked in their favour!

Thinking about it it becomes stranger as this must have happened at the gate.I left mrsdrron after she went through security. The TT plane had just touched down-1240 and scheduled to depart at 1250.So i paid attention to the checkin desks and the TT desk just had a sign on it-checkin closed. So i presume they had been checked in and the next email just in from HKG she said they had BPs.
So It would seem the pax had fulfilled their part of the contract and i would be most insistent that TT fulfill their part-namely have me on a plane that day to MEL at their expense.

Could it be that people are only interested in purchasing cheap airfares and are not aware, or don't care, what can happen flying a LCC?

Considering how the media warps people about QF - frequent and large delays, deplorable customer service (hah! See how some other carriers compare....), dinosaur-old aircraft and rip-off fairs - do you really think you'd be surprised?

As it stands, barring the recent incident re: the wheel 'falling off', seems that DJ is the only airline in AU that is immune from any criticism. Essentially, they always seem to be the good guys...

Its because TT have the highest amount of no-shows in this country. I used their ADL-CBR a couple of times, and the guy said that on average around 10-20 people dont show up. And when I flew a MEL-SYD flight I noticed 187 pax booked on flight on the screen, yet only 170 showed up in the end.

I am guilty of forefeiting alot of Tiger's "Free Seats", and it seems that heaps of others have also... especially when you book them 10 months out

Meanwhile, back at the show, channel 7 tech staff need to update their Airport touchdown scenes, A320s do not have B777 landing gear, there's only 4 wheels on the 320 main gear, not 12.

Cheers Dee

Tiger are double dipping! They already have the revenue from "No Shows", and are selling the seats twice. If more passengers turn up then seats are available, Tiger should have to wear it, and fly the passengers on other airlines at their cost....esp. when their next flight may be a day or two later.

Gets back to the old saying about arriving early and checking in early...

I noticed the distinctive 777 landing gear ... neglected to post.

Watching from Melbourne last week, I saw a DJ Advertisement put on toward the end of the show!

That could be argued with traditional airlines, but with the number of taxes only and $9 seats and similar they have sold, they're not really making much in the way of revenue from a fair number of seats - hence the reason for no-shows as well. (If you only paid $30 a few months ago and your plans change/get a better offer, it's far easier not to bother using that ticket.)

Could not agree more. It is not a passengers fault the airline has taken a chance to overbook the flight. Why should the passenger have to ensure they are at the airport early just in case the airline has overbooked the flight?

No 777's tonight ...
Watching from Melbourne last week, I saw a DJ Advertisement put on toward the end of the show!
The DJ ad was on again. It's the one comparing 1999 with 2009 where in 1999 guy knocks off work and drives through pouring rain at night to meet his girl (never gets there in the ad's 30 seconds) while the 2009 guy finishes work, heads to the airport (no rain?), fly's DJ to wherever the girl is and walks off down the concourse with her arm in arm.

Here's the ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDu38zRPl2U

Actually the 777 did creep in right at the end! :) It is an MH 777 - the blue and red are unmistakeable.

The concept of overbooking and 'standard industry practice' is interesting in light of some low cost carriers.

The argument used to be that overbooking is standard because of so many business travellers on flexible tickets and passengers holding multiple bookings (to keep flexibility).

That might still be the case for some carriers today, but for LCCs where the money is lost if you fail to show it would be interesting to see how they could run the same excuse.

It's called "throw away ticketing". e.g. when fares are about say, $30 some buy two or three for a given afternoon and use the one most suitable - not traveling on the others and forfeiting the fare.

The multi-booking throw-away ticketing is an interesting concept. (cheaper than flexi no doubt sometimes)

Interesting that QF (particularly on Intl routes) outlwas this practice and will cancel bookings if you have multiples (eg SYD-LHR legs) - which presumably helps them manage no-shows

I do have to admit my 10c JQ return SYD-OOL is a bit of an option value ticket. Will see what else I have planned close to the date.

But TT seriously devalues their service if they are willing to bump people with no recompense, and at no fault pf their own, without running a decent enough schedule that lets them recover.
