The way out of lockdowns etc in Australia

The NSW Court overturned the ban at the last minute so the inevitable showdown has been avoided.
Police reports of the March in QLD has 10,000 people.

Maybe SAPOL did not want to try and be King Canute?

Personally I think that things are less likely to get out of control, including social distancing, if what is clearly going to happen anyway is allowed to occur in a more moderated way that if it becomes "police vs demonstrators" chaos and morseo as it was sparked by a police over-action in the first place..

Secondly in terms of pandemic risk:
  • there are very few infected Australians at large in Australia at present
  • the protests will be outside

To me the much bigger risk would be to try to suppress what will in the main be reasonably peaceful protests if managed well, despite no doubt the best efforts of a few radicals who will try and inflame matters and who will no doubt cause some angst.

Imagine my (non-)surprise when I turned on BBC news this morning and the first thing I see is people marching in Sydney in huge numbers, no social distancing........ What a joke.

And perhaps a good reason why quarantine should be in a government monitored hotel and not at home! I read one of the organisers of the rally today describing it as an 'essential service'.

Interesting to see the impact of the easing of lockdowns in Perth. This is a client of mine who I know a few people on here visit, including one of our mods when he visits.

A high court case to get QLD to hand over the Health advice for the border closure has been lost.
The QLD Government lawyers and Senior ministers are now saying the QLD border closure is not the major reason for tourist business losses.Yet on the Gold Coast tourism bodies are saying that 60-80% of their numbers are Interstate travellers.

Maybe the article was updated? The QLD govt in the article is saying the border closures are not the sole reason for tourism losses (as opposed to the 'major' reason').

The reasoning of the High Court seems sound.

What would the Gold Coast hotels know though

.Yet on the Gold Coast tourism bodies are saying that 60-80% of their numbers are Interstate travellers.

The Gold Coast is decimated at present. I was speaking with the Marriott up there this week on a business related matter. 95% of their staff are stood down at present.

They will resume some staff in about a fortnight.

It's quite irrelevant what losses have been incurred. The issue is whether there is an active health reason to close a state border. There isn't, so the closures are now unconstitutional. I think the plaintiff derailed their own case by arguing losses.

The "Issue" in Qld perhaps , is the looming state election and a very canny new labour apparatchick listening to the street talk and directing the governments actions.
I have noted this before and will repeat ; ordinary folks have had a huge fright and are risk averse.
Many commercial enterprises are also reluctant to gear up until they are satisfied that they will not have to shut up shop again.

I nearly committed an act of violence against my radio today. Chap called ABC talkback - retired, has been out fishing, very nice, thank-you, very peaceful where he lives, up the coast etc etc. Hopes that they go reeeeaaaaallllly slow out of the travel and social distancing restrictions, as he likes the peace and quiet and 'business will just have to put up with it'. (I'm retired and no longer run my business, but the day I turn that selfish I hope someone will put a mirror in front of me.)

Though last night she was denying the border closures was hurting tourism.

I think many commercial businesses are bleeding so heavily that thoughts of a second closure are the last thing on their minds with current (negligible) rates of infection.

Sure that cough doesn't live in SA?

W-e-e-e-l-l-l-l hang on. This retiree has 'paid' about 20% of my total super assets so far - even including recent 'bounce' (I'll leave it to your imagination as to how little that is in actual $$ ;) ) and I have zero cash income ATM. Your definition of 'having it pretty good' may be different from mine. 😭

As I mentioned in another thread, think of franking credits as 'Job Keeper' for self funded retirees. :) but its one-off, not multiple dips.

Seriously though, this selfish attitude in some retirees isn't new. I live in a coastal rural community (like the guy above) - there was a proposal to bring Atlantic Salmon fish farming off the coast here, and the opposition was largely from a few retirees here. Didn't want to be disturbed by the boats offshore ( ). Fortunately the industry established OK and now we have abt new 70 jobs here, more families to support local supermarkets, doctors and a good healthy export commodity. Seriously, some of these silly old codgers need to be reminded of the opportunities they had.

According to our boss at work today, Premier Marshall is announcing on Friday that SA will open its borders to QLD, WA, NT and Tasmania in the next 2 weeks with the remaining states by early July potentially

I have been wondering where the lockdown plan came from.It certainly hasn't been mentioned in any past epidemic that I have known.I can well remember travelling around Asia at the height of the Swine flu pandemic that was estimated to infect at least 700 million people world wide.Deaths estimated at 175000-500000 worldwide.

Well It seems the basis of the lockdown program came about as a computer simulation of a flu pandemic commenced as a school project by a 14 year old.Her father was though a complex systems analyst and so s paper was produced modelling the effect on social distancing on a community of 10000 people with children being the most prone to the virus and most infectious.Covid of coursev is basically the opposite with the elderly the most prone and infectious group.

So 3 articles.
