The Velocity Status Run Master thread

This article is probably worth a read if you follow this thread:

I'm in a situation where I'll be around 30 SC short of attaining plat mid-Feb. After that, my SCs will slowly drop off and I will be also chasing the SCs I'll be losing. I should get there by end of April anyway, but would have lost ~100 SCs on the way. Been hoping for a DSC but we haven't had a real one since last July(!)...

I'm trying to weigh up whether $360 is worth:
  • Economy X on the ~4 flights
  • The 100 SCs 'wasted' which could go towards requalification (1/8 of the way there!)
It's unfortunate that you need the 1000 SC to qualify for the first year, and it also is the only opportunity to 'manipulate' the anniversary date.

If I'm reading you correctly, the question is regarding whether Platinum is worth $360.

For me, Platinum is definitely worth $360 because I save far more than that booking cheaper (later in the day) fares and then using "Fly Ahead" to fly on an earlier, often more expensive, flight. And I love the convenience of getting to my destination/home earlier if I arrive at the airport in time for an earlier flight. I also appreciate the free internet (when it works), and having extra legroom seats on every flight (not just 4 flights per year as you seem to suggest) is a nice touch too.

But really you need to weigh up how Platinum works for you. If you're Gold you still get things such as priority boarding, lounge access and an extra luggage allowance. And if "Fly Ahead", free internet and extra legroom doesn't matter to you (or doesn't matter much), then it's hard to see how spending the $360 will be worth it.

Bit of a clarification, I will definitely hit platinum in April regardless, since in my case it's a rolling qualification window (as I am currently Gold). It's if it's worth hitting Platinum earlier, since I have a chunk of SCs dropping off which I need to catch up to (and earn on top of). The 4ish flights are the ones in between Feb and Apr.

So really your question is:

Is it worth spending $360 for one month of Platinum?

No.
