While on the topic of first home buyers, I don't think I have updated RE: penegal sister's first home for a few weeks.

She settled in mid August. It was delayed approx 1 week due to the vendor needing to re-finance one of their investment loans. She didn't move in immediately, instead taking her time to plan the move and do a few odd jobs. The place was in great condition, with only a few minor works required before moving in.

Moving about ~8km (and not being kicked out of the previous place) makes life a lot easier! We moved a lot of the small things ourselves in cars, did 1 trailer load, and then hired professional movers for the larger items which meant costs were extremely reasonable (e.g. A few hundred bucks!).

Upgrading from a bedroom in someone else's house to a unit of your own means you need new furniture & appliances (fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, couch, TV unit, coffee table, dining table, chairs, kitchen appliances and plenty of random bits and bobs you don't immediately think of). Between my father's colleague who was downsizing, yours truly and other family members she was able to get most of this as hand-me-downs for free. Some of the items are a bit old, but everything is in working condition to get her started, and she can upgrade at her leisure in the future. So really, she has been very lucky. I love her couch - it is old, but very comfortable.

She had a housewarming party yesterday with about 25 people and the place is looking really great, and could easily accommodate that number.

Anyway, so for me, I am probably going to sell up and move next year sometime. The current chateaux penegal is a little too big for one person, especially one person who is away travelling more often than not. This is compounded by the possibility that I may find myself making a career change around the same time, so watch this space.

I was lucky in the same respect with large items. None of the big furniture in our house is ours, such as the couches, tables, fridge etc. Certainly makes things easier. I had bought all the smaller stuff over a few years so I was pretty to go once I had the place to myself (except for a kettle!). Couches have seen better days but with an indoor cat there isnt much point upgrading.

The more wine you drink, the less you will have to move

That is the plan. When are you coming over?

Also, a 3000+ bottle wine cellar is a difficult requirement when looking at new houses.

Shingles vaccinations are available in Australia so if you are over 50 they say you have a one in three chance of having an attack. Currently 3 of our friends have shingles none of whom were vaccinated. Ouch....it hurts![/QUOTE] Ran into a friend at the doc's last week, coming in to have shingles diagnosed, she's the second person in a fortnight I've heard of. Asked the GP what she thought of the vaccination - I've had chicken pox aged 5 and again at 23 plus get cold sores, so thought I might be particularly vulnerable. Sadly we don't have an audio equivalent of her dismissive snort - in her opinion it's being pushed by drug companies with no benefit that she has seen. As MrMac has recently undergone cancer treatment his immune system's been compromised; I think I might err on the side of caution and pop back for a second opinion!!

I'd like a shingles vaccination. I was shocked to be told when I was thirty that I'd never had chicken pox (I though I had, since my sister definitely did, I must have been naturally immune), then caught it a few months later (before I'd got around to bring vaccinated). I do not want shingles on top of that. I wonder if it's more or less urgent for me since I had chicken pox only a decade ago?

Suze2000 the shingles vax is treated as an over 50 age recommendation in the US. Shingles seems to really affect the older folks in our community when their resistance is low. My parents in law and sister in law have all had the shots in the age range of 60 to 90 and there were no complications.
I suggest you read what Princess Fiona wrote regarding shingles and nerve endings getting inflamed. All I see are friends getting their lives messed up.

The things you see on the train. Caught the E train to the World Trade Centre stop and saw a woman doing her make up. Nothing unusual about that but she didn't have a mirror.

She had her smart phone on selfie movie mode and watched herself on screen as the trowelled on the make up.

Surely the inventors of this technology wouldn't have ever thought of using it for that purpose?

Oh the things I see on the London Tube at times ... My recent favorite was one girl assisting another put on fake eyelashes! Another girl was traveling with hair rollers in. The make-up routine and/or nail polish I see at least one in 5 trips, and there is a myriad of other odd stuff too.

I do that all the time....

Catch the E train? or
Put your make up on, on the train? or
Use your smartphone in movie selfie mode (or maybe mirror app?)

Or all 3? :p:p:p

Just ordered/transferred my ADSL service to NBN for my new place. I think I'm more excited about that than anything else to do with moving.

P.S who's idea was it for settlement on the 6th November? Melbourne cup week! Clearly i wasn't thinking straight at the time...

These discussions have had much valuable information - thanks Princess Fiona and others. I've made a note to mention it to my GP at my next annual checkup. I got chicken pox was I was 42 and it wasn't pleasant. I was aware that shingles could result later in life but had no idea there was a vaccination.
