The Operational Upgrade Thread

Who said good things only happen to good people?

My lovely premium economy bulkhead on QF52 has been swapped for 3J in business! Did not bother using OLCI and I have SEQ 325 on what appears to be a full flight which is in contrast to last weeks QF51.

How often does Qantas do op-ups during OLCI? My Y+ seat became a front-cabin J seat when I did OLCI 10 hours before departure, for QF52 tonight.
Where are you now? Come and say hello if you are alone.

I was just upgraded on check in at LAX for my VA flight to MEL, from a W reward to J. I was dreading the flight home so this was a very pleasant surprise indeed, even if it is a middle seat. Was advised the flight is oversold.

When I got to the gate my boarding pass was ripped up and the first thing that went through my mind was downgrade. Luckily handed boarding pass for 7K instead.

She said it was a dup seat and they were trying to page me in the Qantas lounge. I told her I was in the Emirates lounge. My guess is some ungrateful sod wasn't happy with their allocated seat.

FWIW 1K was CL Emerald. I saw boarding pass with name and status in Qantas lounge. I do not recognise the name and when I googled it got a former rubgy league player and I don't think he would be Chairmans Lounge.

Darren Lockyer?

Must have been a refurb 744 - how was Skybed Mk 2?
It was OK sitting upright but then I reclined partway and it was very uncomfortable.

I slept ~30 minutes as I was hooked on Poppit which was way more important. ;)

Must have been a refurb 744 - how was Skybed Mk 2?

Having been acquainted with the CX Cirrus seat, and this was actually my first time in the Skybed Mk2, my first thought was that the Skybed felt like a Y+ seat that lies flat. Perhaps it's an exaggeration, but being a solo traveller in a 2-2-2 config doesn't help. At the fully flat position, it was incredibly tight at the upper body, and thought it was worse than the CX coffin - although it was a while back since I had the coffin, so it's likely that I've gained weight since that time. The seat itself is actually quite hard, but the mattress made it a lot more comfortable to seat on. Personally, I also think that it's a design fault that there isn't any reasonably sized storage area that can be reached while I'm on the seat. The storage at the back of the seat in front is too far to reach without getting up.

Having said that, the Cirrus is newer, and is regarded as an exceptional product, so perhaps I'm just being unfairly harsh on the Skybed. In the end, I did manage to get some good sleep, and in general, it's still a reasonably comfortable seat, all things considered.

As a WP you need to try to snaffle 3E, 3F, 5B, 5J, 14A or 14K for the best seats with their own storage. Also any other upper deck window seat has side storage.

Not sure if it is Op Up or not but I could and did allocate myself on seat 2A for VA BME-PER E90 flight. Food is still the same but at least I got a bigger seat. I am VA Gold.

Two in a row last month, J to F on QF127 & QF128.
Started as a PE sale fare with points upgrades to J, so not too shabby.
Both flights were virtually full.

As a WP for 3+ years who flys almost entirely in Dom Y I got my 2nd ever opup!! Yay QF;-)

full flight BNE-PER so really grateful as I managed to get some work done!

Im thinking its because I just booked F to DXB and they are trying to say thanks haha!!

Just did QF93 + QF94 last week. Op-Up from J to F, both ways. Very much appreciated (it should be noted that due to a last minute re-booking I was on the most expensive J fare you can get). And for those wondering... it was the Pol on the way over, and the Tatt on the way back.

We had a bit of a bingle at LHR T5 last week. On the escalator in front of us a chubby chap with two big bags started falling over. His bags were pulling him back, he lost his balance and toppled and stumbled down a couple of treads. I had visions of him falling backwards down the slope in a snowball of people and bags grinding along at the bottom until the mechanism jammed or someone hit the red button. Luckily my wife stopped him before he got to me.

But she had a bruise forming on her leg from the sudden contact with one of his bags and was whinging and limping as we went into the BA First lounge with two hours until our JNB flight, where I'd picked up Y+ for only a couple of hundred extra on the Y fare. I got her into the quiet area, propped up her legs and soothed her down with champagne and Panadol.

But still, she wasn't real happy.

Not until we got to the gate and they ripped up our boarding passes and gave us new ones for upper deck J on the B744. Woot!

She was smiling then. I even got the exit row window seat.

Wasn't expecting anything much from BA, but that was a nice little surprise.

From time to time there will be a need for cabin crew to upgrade passenger(s) on a two or three class configuration from whY to J due to medical needs. One example might be where a whY passenger develops severe asthma but the economy class section is full.

Other reasons might be if two passengers were double booked in a full economy cabin but it was not noticed until everyone had tried to take their seat.

However there was very brief mention of a 'galley (processed) upgrade' on AFF in the last few days.

it has always intrigued me. Once an aircraft's doors are loaded and secured and the plane has taken off and levelled out, if I am not mistaken the critical time for the aircraft's trim (weight distribution) has ended.

Apart from a lack of say business class meals loaded or the forward section cabin crew's desire to do less work along with possible raised eyebrows from other staff or business class passengers, what stops cabin crew from selectively upgrading 'nice' or 'good looking' passengers, those who might be prepared to offer a spare hundred smackaroos or similar for the privilege, or who ask (not that I've ever heard it) on board if there is any chance of being upgraded for free?

Is it a case of a cabin crew member facing questioning by management or the sack if the latter somehow found out?
