The Operational Upgrade Thread

Had an Op Up on American Airlines New Orleans to Miami (AA526) a few weeks back from an el cheapo (O) ticket. Not at all sure why it happened - the plane didn't look that full - not that I'm complaining :)

Had an op-up from Y+ to J on QF15 on Thursday, flight was oversold they told us after they paged us in the lounge. Was delighted when I heard my name called!

One of the FAs later told us a Sydney flight had been cancelled and some who were flying SYD-LAX were accommodated on the Brisbane direct flight.

FWIW we were travelling on points and had bulkhead seats selected. Five people total were paged in the lounge.

Irony is that the BNE/SYD flight they thought was u/s ended up going after all.

QF52 SIN-BNE yesterday, originally on red-e deal, upgraded to Y+.
Did the Thai beef stir fry and grilled salmon in the lounge, along with a few glasses of red; didn't eat on the flight.

Service was good, staff was friendly. Last leg of 8 day BNE-KUL-MAA-SIN-BNE trip. Next trip a weekend in Tokyo in August, see if I get another upgrade:)

With the silly season (aka school holidays) ending in July, you'll need to pray very hard. :)

Or hope you get a flight full of Japanese school children travelling down under. Last time I flew back from NRT every seat was taken and there may well have been a few op ups (I was booked in J). They were beautifully behaved and very quiet.

Two op-ups for me in July:

MH31 (IST-KUL): Y to J (handed the new BP at the aircraft door)
QF6 (SIN-SYD): Y to Y+ @ the check-in lounge.

Two op-ups for me in July as well:

QF21: SYD to NRT... PE (Y+) to J... Online check in still showing me in PE.. at airport handed over the new BP. Don't think the flight was full.
QF22: NRT to SYD.. PE to J... T-20 hours online checkin already showing me in J. Y and PE were full. J had a few spare seats.

Loving QF right now...

Doesn't matter if the whole flight isn't full, you only need your class (PE) to be full or oversold. :)

sorry that is what I meant QF21.. PE was not full either.. I walked through the cabin.. So it could technically not been an Op-Up.. but a status based Upgrade.. I am a WP1

Got one on FJ a couple of weeks back, plane was completely full, got the magic beep at the gate.

I've always wondered how people get Op-ups on FJ considering FJ don't get your QFF status information.?

It was sold as a QF flight number so I don't know if that had anything to do with it

BA 0015 01 Aug y+ -> J

At early check-in at SIN the agent was confused. Gave me a BP with a seat, then noticed I had a confirmed (different) seat in the reservation. Made a telephone cal and replaced the first BP with one with the original seat number. Got the J BP when going through the gate check-in.

Happy wandering

Fred

Not really an op up but at Mel Mh we were given tickets to Golden lounge as check in noticed my wife's 50th birthday
A very pleasant way to start our trip

Just returned from around the world trip from Johannesburg getting to Johannesburg had booked a triangle route Syd - Per - JNB then in December JNB - LHR - HEL - SIN - SYD. Perth to JNB being sold as QF303 actually flight SA 281 on the 28th of June.

We had a minor issue at Sydney with my Partner leaving his passport to work, so I was checked through and he was only to Perth having received his pass at commencement of boarding.

When we went to check in at Perth I asked the Qantas check-in staff if we were seated together and she said can I see your boarding pass, she then said "unfortunately you won't be sitting in these seats" rips up the boarding pass and hands us two new ones with a short pause "because you'll be sitting in business class" first op up I've had was completely not expecting it as it was a South African airlines flight.

We were both gold at the time, I am now platinum. I had linked the booking with my rtw business class ticket so don't know if that helped but business class wasn't terribly full.

Was excellent and the airline also far exceeded my expectations.

Op up this morning BNE-DRW. I normally fly direct from Sydney but this time via BNE. Might have to do it more often if an op up is in order. I have rarely received them in direct flight. Maybe 2 in 5 years

Mmmm I've got a flight coming up on Sunday with QF and the loading is so far J4 C4 D2 I0 Y2 B2 H0 K0 M0 L0 G0 E0.

Judging from the seatmap there's 1 WP and 9 SG (2 of which are seated next to each other). Anyone have any idea if they'll op-up 4 pax to J or just the WP and leave the SG's behind. (I've been on the same flight with the same loading but with only two SG and both were given op-ups so we know the Y cabin is full enough to trigger op-ups)

My main question out of curiosity however is does anyone know how they hand out op-up's? If there are more people of the same status to go into a set number of seats would they base it on who's the first to check-in or PCV?
