The Operational Upgrade Thread

All this hacks me off. I have flown probably 60 times in the last 12 months domestically. MEL / BRI / SYD / ADL / PER Etc etc - 98% of the time on QF. Internatoinally I have been to London 5 times, and Singapore twice.

Have nearly 4000 SC's this year and 2 months to go - have been QP for 10 plus years, LTG for last 8 or so years.

Had one op up in the last 12 months. And I dont wear stubbies and thongs !

I feel like I am being discriminated against given the previous message of "2 from 2"

My comment wasn't meant to stir anyone up, just an observation. I have flown CNS-SYD twice in my lifetime (once 2 years ago and once this week) and was saying that I have received an op up both times. First time I was SG and this time WP (in the most recent one my GF who is SG and was on same booking also was op upped).

I have also received in my lifetime the following op ups:
AYQ-SYD (was originally booked AYQ-ASP-SYD but inbound aircraft broke and we were put on later direct flight)
SYD-AKL (flight delayed 6 hours - was first ever visit to F lounge so not all bad)
SYD-DRW (who knows what reason)

I know I am by no means the biggest flyer here but I do do SYD-DRW return every second week for work, plus usually 6 or so domestic sectors plus 6 or so international sectors per year. I just think I have been lucky (unlucky) with delays and with what sectors I have flown, that is all.

Wasn't taking it too badly :)

I just reckon there is no system - you get lucky or you don't. . I can't really vomplain because I have had several decent op ups over the years - but recently not a lot. I actually counted my domestic flights after I typed my last note - its 87 sectors in the last 12 months not including international. So I reckon I am a reasonably FF. Maybe Q know I will just fly them so don't feel they need to sweeten me up.

The system is firstly the flight has to be full in the lower class, then they start finding people.

In my view that is the highest factor in all this luck - getting a completely full flight in the lower classes. (Or at least "full" enough to start op-ups).

All this speculation of "the company doesn't love me" or "that b*stard SG got op upped before me" is just that, and frankly all it's doing here is infuriating people and shortening their life span.

If you want to travel a higher class, don't rely on op-ups: pay for it.

There's more to it then just "lucky or not" (but in the end, that's the best way to describe it!). Let's say Economy is oversold and you're traveling in Business. Unless Premium Economy and Business are also full, there's little chance of getting an upgrade.

A lot of upgrades occur over peak travel times for students/parents etc (school holidays, Christmas etc). The overbooking tends to be in Economy.

So a lot of upgrades do start in either Economy or Premium Economy (from my experience) and then roll forward as appropriate.

Which is why for long haul liesure travel I look for the best Business or Y+ fare available if I can't use points for J. Because in almost 20yrs of flying regularly with "Elite" status, if have never had an op upgrade on a long haul sector :(

Must be the colour of my eyes?

:D

Good things come to those who wait!!

Your stats get into the ' interesting 'level

What sort of routing, generally?

Yesterday: Missed my PDX-LAX flight and got upgraded to first on PDX-PSP-LAX . Then upgrade from Eco to Economy Plus (Premium Eco but Y headphones and Y food - new to me.. ) on QF16 LAX-BNE.

I can't really complain, apart fron the occasional trip to NZ, all my OS travel is in J. With less sectors even offering F, the opportunities for an upgrade are getting few and far between.

However, much of my travels have been return flights between SYD-LAX / SYD-SFO with QF, UA and NZ (when NZ did SYD-LAX). Sometimes 3 or 4 times a year.

Unfortunately, current corp travel policy doesn't favour QF. Which doesn't help!

Oneday when I get the call, it will be a genuine and pleasant surprise :p

OpUp

Got surprise upgrade to business from Y, SYD-CNS. B767 and 2.5hrs. At the gate, the scanner went beep-beep and I didnt have the slightest idea of what was coming. Anyway, pleasant flight, very good service, even better weather at destination. Thank you, Qantas.

My husband and I travelling back to ADL from Sin Jan 16th from E to J. I am PS and QP and he is NB. OP-up happened at check in. Went from 30J/K to 2E/F. That was my first op-up since joining FF and QP in March 2010. :D

ADL-SYD, Red e-Deal fare (non-upgradeable), Sunday, 1pm flight (hardly peak time?).

Received the upgrade at kiosk checkin - Seat 1C. I didn't even notice "Business", thinking it was one of those all Y 737s.

My partner was already checked in and in the lounge, so I spoke to the guy at the desk about having been moved away from my partner. Of course, he says you've been upgraded and to cut to the chase, managed to get another J BP for my parner!

Not sure if it was because it was my birthday or WP status or both?

Has anyone else had an unexpected birthday present from QF?

Recently I got an upgrade from SFO to SYD, deep discount whY to J in a first class seat! The elapsed day was my birthday.

Very noice indeed. The flight must have been chronicaly oversold. They were going around the QP asking for volunteers to be offloaded. Never found out what the deal was.

Do you know the registration of the aircraft?

Methinx you may have had a 4 class aircraft being sold as three with the First Seats being used for Business class, some Business class used for PE and some PE seats used for economy.

I suspect you were in one of the seats in rows 36-39 if on an ER?

When we had preferred carriers, I used to say I must travel at this time and they would switch to QF.

I would also get flights already heavily booked.........make the switcharoo

There are ways around it if you have some authority and information.

QF582 PER > SYD, Sun 20/03 on a Red e-Deal (Q) fare.

OLCI at T-5 produced the expected Y boarding pass.

Re-checked at a kiosk at T-1 and a J BP popped out....and very much appreciated.

Do you have status? If so, what level?

Hi Doc.

SG here. I guess that would've been a factor.

Also, just realised my points balance crept over a 100k threshold a couple of days beforehand due to some non-BIS activity. Probably just pure coincidence that the Op-Up followed.
