The great hand luggage only challenge!!!

The NEW challenge

As I stare at my packing for Sunday's trip to the cooler climes of HKG and PVG I have been struggling with my luggage for this trip. Given the cold in PVG (-3) I was thinking a large winter coat might be in order.

However as the planning begins I realise I wont need a suit at all so all I will need are a couple of pairs of poofter pants  and a 3-4 shirts. I wont be socializing much given the multiple cities in a few days and I am travelling alone...

SO the thought occurs to me - can I manage on just a 20in rollaboard and a laptop bag...

The game is afoot!

Thanks for the reminder. I will be in PVG in a few weeks and I don't own any clothes suitable for -3

You can always have the FA hang the coat for you ... and wear it in HKG to and from the airport.

That's what I keep saying - you probably don't need a suit. Poofter pants - are they the chinos? I Googled them - they're just a pair of cotton pants. This forum is the only place I've ever heard the term.

I was in PVG last week (Downtown actually), and also Suzhou, it was cold alright ! i needed to take boots, it was snowing, but now you should be fine.
Enjoy it :D

I wish i could find warm wind proof compact jacket... i have warm but they are really bulky and would take 50% of the room in hand luggage so i just carry, fine if you going from cold to cold, but terrible if you are comming or going warm to cold or vv.

I will have the same dilemna on my next trip. Pittsburgh and Poland are both pretty cold this time of the year, barely making it above 0°C.

Was hoping to do carry-on, but with a jacket and a pair of safety shoes this might be pushing it a bit.

In Osaka the other week, I found Denim was quite useful, especially when it was snowing lightly. If you look around the Flounges of our region, you would notice that Jeans are a commonly used travel apparel.

Just make sure you wear them when checking in; they do weigh somewhat more than cinos or trousers.

I can wholeheartedly assure you that no self-respecting poofter would be seen dead in Chinos.

As I have made my opinions re cotton trousers abundantly clear in other threads on this board, I don't intend to say any more on the matter, other than that I don't imagine they are suitable when the temperature is -3, especially if it's windy too.

Well the CHinos are thick cotton so I will be fine. Thankfully (?) my life revolves around hotel-cab-office-cab-hotel so the real need for warm clothes will not be so great...

You might want to try layering with a Gore-Tex coat/shell on the outside - I find them to be fantastic at stopping the wind, yet allowing some moisture to escape when things get a little warmer. Certainly living two years in NE US proved the effectiveness of this rather than labouring a thick coat around.

Yes, of course - I have a large collection of Valentino, Chanel and Lanvin Couture gowns which I love wear when I travel - not only do they LOOK like they belong in First, but I feel like a Princess the whole time. Of course I have to check-in with more luggage than Joan Collins, Ivana Trump and QEII combined, but it's worth it to feel so pretty.

Well the single bag is not even full!

I would never have believed that a pair of trousers would elicit such vitriol...

I've never heard of Lanvin or Valentino - do they make Chinos? Chanel make over-priced perfume as I recall.

So you parade around in haute coutere? Chinos will make a comeback, just mark my words :)

Yes. Yes they do. Exquisite, customised, hand-made Chinos, in any colour the customer desires. Strangely, though, the most popular colour is beige...

Anyhoo, when packing a small bag for cold climes, you can't go past GoreTex et al for their wind-stopping power. It's very light, and looks... OK.

Sounds good. If they're less than $100 I might be interested.

I'm going to South America next month for 3 days - easy one for hand luggage only - after the challenges faced here, it's not an issue.

About time this thread got a bump since serfty mentioned it today.

For casual trips like weekends away, i have become a fan of the Eagle creek small duffel bags.
Eagle Creek ES Cargo Duffel - Small
Although the medium one should also get past most security people unless you fill it up 100%

Ooh, big thread bump! Lots of good information in this one.

A question though - has nobody copped flack from customs about traveling internationally with one bag? When I was working in Japan I had to fly back to Australia for 3 days for a wedding - did it with carry on and got hauled over the coals by customs in Cairns about why I had so little luggage.

Or maybe I just looked dodgy?

Or maybe I just looked dodgy?

Bingo ;)

Ihave never had any problems with the rollaoard and suitbag.

I did once get pinged by outboud customs staff for being over weight for hand luggage as aI had a whY coloured BP for a CX J seat and they would not accept that I was in J...
