The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Is it a surprise that it is highest in WA and QLD.Shows up incompetent leadership
Or it just shows a lack of significant outbreaks. We’ve seen hesitancy drop every time there is an outbreak. All we need to do is sneak in a few house hunters, reality show crews and moving trucks and that hesitancy will just melt away.

NSW only had 72 more cases than VIC for the day (though NSW had 11 more deaths than VIC). This was despite NSW doing over 80% more tests than VIC.

So there could in reality have been more new cases in VIC than NSW for the day.

High vaccination rates in NSW are working to along with other measures, limit transmission.

I think one thing Vic is a little behind is vaccinating critical workers in key LGAs.

I think one thing Vic is a little behind is vaccinating critical workers in key LGAs.

Yes but not just essential workers, but also all living in those LGA's. Apart from having a high number of people who work in jobs that cannot be done at home, they also have a younger population who gained access to be vaccinated later due to that.

The Commonwealth Channel is only from this week on Day 67 of the outbreak (and mainly from tomorrow with Moderna arriving at any scale) starting to get enough GP practices and Pharmacists vaccinationing in the key LGA's. The Commonwealth did start about a week ago re-directing more doses to the few sites they had in these LGA's, but they has only opened up very few sites, it was constrained in what they could vaccinate. Even now it will take another fortnight for them to get enough up and vaccinating. As it is having not been open when they really needed to have been many of these newly approved facilities will probably give very few AZ doses. Whereas if they had of been up and running a month or so back they probably would have.

Even though it is the Commonwealth Channel the State Government has today announced cash grants to GP's and Pharmacists in the key LGA's to enable them to maximise their vaccination rates (The grants can be used to pay staff, or rental for more space (or a separate space) such as an empty shop nearby).

Pro-rata the Commonwealth Channel had less GPs and Pharmacists up and running in Victoria than other jurisdictions. Indeed during this outbreak in August the Commonwealth actually paused the approval of more facilities in this Channel in Victoria. The facilities that they had were mainly located in the regions and suburbs which typically experience less cases. So in general country regions had the highest vaccination rate, then more affluent suburbs in Melbourne and then suburbs in the north and west the lowest. This coincided where the Commonwealth had approved the most facilities in per head of population.

So given the demographics and what facilities were open vaccination rates were low.

For a while now the state channel has been directing 50% of doses to these LGA's both through large hubs but also by opening up additional state hubs (ie the drive through being one such site) pop-ups at schools, council buildings and religious locations. This has led over the last month those LGA's having the largest rise in % vaccinated. But this is from a low base.

With the Commonwealth Channel now finally vaccinating at a more appropriate level in these LGA's the recent rapid vaccination rate in these LGA's should now accelerate further. As Moderna will also be disproportionately go to these key LGA's they will receive first and second doses at 4 weeks. This is quicker than the current second dose rate at state hubs of 6 weeks for Pfizer/AZ. GPs are doing Pfizer at 3 to 6 weeks, and AZ at 6+). So the second dose rate for the key LGA's will probably catch up to the rest of Melbourne and the State. Indeed the first and second dose rate may well in just over a month exceed the rest of Melbourne.

The Vaccinations per LGA are updated weekly. The last week is now out.

As per my post just above they are now approaching the same vaccination rate as most of Melbourne due he recent State Hub ramp up in those LGA's over the last month or so. Now that the Commonwealth Channel is also belatedly focusing on these LGA's by distributing opening more facilities in these facilities and in supplying more doses in these LGA's these suburbs should accelerate even faster. The Commonwealth which had previously approved very few GP and Pharmacists in Victoria until very recently, will by mid-Oct finally get to reasonable numbers. Way too late for the channel (Primary plus Aged Care) that originally was meant to be delivering 75% of vaccinations, but better late than never.

As these were, and are, the suburbs generating the most cases, this should start to have more and more impact in minimising hospitalisations and other adverse health outcomes.

So next week hopefully most of the problem VIC LGAs will be up around 80% first dose. Hopefully not too long before second doses speed up there.

It's going to be interesting to see how these are treated
I guess a reasonable compromise could be to require those with the less effective vaccines to have a booster of a TGA approved vaccine after arriving in Australia.

Well I hope they do at least recognise Indian made AZ as this is what Seat Son had in Dubai.

I'm not that surprised - "why should I get a shot, there is no COVID here" is pretty common thinking in QLD and WA at the moment.
And from the figures to date the same applies to S.A as well.

Which is why I pointed out the graph could be the lower than average high school completion rate in QLD and WA..... sigh.....

It turns out VIC case numbers were higher yesterday than NSW. VIC case numbers were under reported yesterday.

Today's case numbers were slightly higher in VIC than in NSW. The real figure could be a much bigger difference as NSW is doing a lot more testing than VIC.

NSW's high vaccination rates are working to keep their numbers down for now whilst VIC's case numbers continue to climb.

Well today is the first day of better access to Commonwealth Primary Care Channel in Victoria. So vaccination rates should now climb.

No news on any increased activity in the Commonwealth Disability and Age Care Channel though that the Commonwealth has since the recent outbreaks started has in Victoria only been vaccinating at the rate of only 7% of the National Doses rather than 25.9%. So hopefully that too will now see a surge as it has now declined to be at only 18% share of total coughulative national doses, whereas when the outbreak started in Vic it was about 27%.

Better access in the Primary Care Channel as in it is only now opening up a reasonable, but still low, number of GPs and Pharmacists in Victoria and moreso it is only about now (started about a week ago, but will still take another 2-3 weeks) to open them up substantially in the LGA's of highest cases, which were also the LGA's with least access to the Primary Care Channel in terms of actually having GPs and Pharmacists within their own suburbs. More are also to be opened up in Melbourne as generally speaking the Primary Care Channel had better coverage in the regions that in Greater Melbourne.

In addition increased doses of Moderna and Pfizer are now physically arriving in the Primary Care Channel in terms of being available to actually be injected into arms. The Moderna is now arriving, which is a little later than was indicated. As not enough of the Primary Care Channel has been activated this week, the Commonwealth has agreed that 30,000 doses of Moderna will be used by the Monash Health State Channel in SE hotspots.

Greg Hunt Media Release12 September 2021
Residents in Melbourne’s north and west will benefit from additional vaccines and a rapid expansion of vaccination sites across the region as part of a three-week vaccination blitz.
To assist these communities and all Victorians, the Commonwealth will surge more than 417,000 doses of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to Victoria in September.
The surge will consist of:
  • More than 127,600 additional Pfizer doses will be delivered by the last week of September to 532 Victorian GPs, increasing their vaccine allocation from 600 doses a fortnight to 900 doses a fortnight.
  • More than 108,700 additional Pfizer doses will be delivered to the Victorian Government as part of Operation COVID Shield.
  • An additional 180,700 Moderna doses will be delivered to Victorian pharmacies over the next two weeks. This is in addition to 119,510 Moderna vaccines that were already scheduled for Victorian pharmacies this month.

The not so good news is most of those doses is to address the doses not provided in July and August as it would obviously have been better to in terms of assisting in suppressing cases and adverse health outcomes have had more people vaccinated in July/August rather than late Sept/October.

70.03% of 50+ are fully vaccinated

30.78% of 12-15 have had their first dose. This is even higher in NSW (44.46%) and VIC (37.08%). When tomorrow's numbers come out on Thursday NSW should be past 50% first dose for 12-15. So for all those concerned about unvaccinated teenagers (despite healthy kids not dying from COVID-19) they should all have had an opportunity to get their first dose at least before reopening.

70+ is at 94.1% first dose. There's the possibility that maybe later this week or sometime next week it could get to 95%.

When Sunday's numbers came out yesterday 35-39 reached 40.2% (now 41.2%) fully vaccinated, over half way to 80%

75-79 has 80.2% fully vaccinated, the first age group to go past 80% on the national average.

45-49 is at 59.9% fully vaccinated and 40-44 is at 59.6% fully vaccinated. When today's numbers are released tomorrow both should be past 60% which would mean every age group 40-44 and up would be past 60% fully vaccinated. 40-44 and 45-49 may reach 80% first dose later this week as well.

SA 16+ has reached 66.69% first dose (over 2/3) and TAS has reached 75.42%

NSW is at 74.97% fully vaccinated for 50+.

As of yesterday's numbers released today, in VIC every age group 40-44 and up is past 80% first dose and every age group 30-34 and up is past 70% first dose and every age group 65-69 and up is past 70% fully vaccinated.

60.92% of 40-44 in VIC are fully vaccinated, however only 30.13% of 35-39 and the numbers are even lower for younger age groups.

64.24% of 16-19 year-olds in VIC have had their first dose, but only 11.3% are fully vaccinated. So 52.94% of 16-19 year-olds in VIC have had one dose, but not two.

If supply can surge in VIC and 2nd doses at mass hubs be brought back down to 3 weeks the fully vaccinated numbers should begin to climb rapidly.

What's the point of carrying on about supply when I can go on the website of two major pharmac_ chains in Melbourne and have mRNA swimming around in my immune system before breakfast tomorrow morning?
