The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Woolworths just started that there're advocating all staff to get vaccinated, setting up a hub in Sydney LGA areas of distress.
Also giving all staff upto 8 hours paid leave to get the jab.

It's this type of movement & positivity from large corps that will get the critical %% heading north.
I think that was announced by I guess the NSW authorities maybe about a week ago.

The workers in the big 5 supermarkets (Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, IGA and ???) in the 8 LGAs are in the priority queue (I'm guessing with the pregnant women that was also announced recently - I'm thinking/feeling just afterwards).

Edit: to add a relevant article Supermarket workers in south-west Sydney to get priority access to Pfizer vaccine

And with increasing supply and delivery mechanisms (e.g. pharmacies): we could actually do a fair bit better than that.

2 issues 1. to keep people coming forward as we start scraping the barrel
2. Some states are at the slower end now and may not necessarily accelerate with the others
We are sure to get a graph from ABC or something like that tracking our progress and have a projection line based on the last 7 days average.

And Tassie is going to start vaccinating over 30s. Ok small population but it’s keeping the momentum going.

I ignore ABC - it always seems way under. We optimists need something better than that :)

Can I ask where you have seen that?
I listened to Morrison’s press conference. He stated it quite clearly. A reporter then asked did that mean they wouldn’t vaccinate 12 to 15s and he said they intended to once they had the ATAGI recommendation but that these goals would remain of the 16+ population.

That's a shame - I would have thought bringing in the 12-15 will actually help us meet the 80% of eligible target. I think the thinking was school-based jabs, so at least a simplified mode of offering/appointments. Yes more jabs required but babies get many jabs and parent of kids are mostly used to kids getting jabs.

Honestly with today's announcement - all States and Territories should open up eligibility for Astra Zeneca to anyone who wants it tomorrow.

Is covidlive more your thing? Not sure who else might spend time preparing such a graph.

If I remember correctly it was because the transmissibility levels were different in children to the adult population so they wanted the % based on the adult population. They would refresh if necessary, but that was the current thinking

Yes I love CovidLive and then spend a lot of time doing my own extrapolations :)

UK likely has heard immunity because covid went rampant. Maybe we just should have engaged in a Darwin theory and got it over and done with last year. Shame on you for berating someone who wants to see their family having already missed some of their family members important events. Family is all we have.
Hear hear. And the vaccinated should not be held hostage by the anti-vaxxers or the hesitant. This plan should have said something like 70% vaccinated or whatever percentage has been achieved by a specific date that was calculated to be long enough for every who wants a cough to get it, plus a bit longer, but no more.
I don’t believe we will ever achieve 80% nationally and I will seriously go postal if I have to wait another year to see my son because of crazies or fraidy cats. That’s just not fair, right or reasonable. Many of us have missed important life events already for the greater good. My willingness to keep doing so is waning.

I’m sorry but you’re all being too optimistic. There will be hold outs not vaccinating and we will be imprisoned here for another year while the economy goes down the gurgler before we reach 80%vaccination.
We will see in a few months :).

I can only hope that when fully vaccinated levels reach say 40-50% people who are fully vaccinated will tell the governments in polls we need to open up and they'll come under pressure to come up with a real plan.

Uk is 71% of adult population fully vaccinated and a bit under 90% with one jab (according to the official UK Covid site)
Ok, so I (and the UK government) was a few weeks premature in claiming success but nevertheless the core part of my argument remains, that the Uk has shown (or will shortly show) that 80% of eligible is achievable.

You need to be more optimistic! Of course while I’m optimistic that it will happen I’m not as optimistic that it will happen in the timelines espoused by some. But once people eventually realise that this is what is needed the message will eventually sink in. I agree not everyone needs or wants to travel but they hate lockdowns and it has to eventually sink in that vaccination is a key part of the strategy to avoid them.

I get it that many people are angry/frustrated in this echo chamber about today's announced vaccination /freedom plan, but its important to note given the stats coming out of NSW - hospitalisation and ICU numbers across age demographics - show that everyone is vulnerable.

Federal Health Minister noting 77% intending to get a covid vaccine.

UK getting to 90% first dose and 70% two-doses.

80% is really achievable.

The past few days, NSW Premier is trying to get momentum saying August is vaccination month in NSW, so we shall see how Australia goes in the next few weeks.

While uptake has increased, I think unfortunately that way too many people Australia wide are still waiting for Pfizer.

With the ready availability of AZ while there has been some recent ramping up, it still is sadly well below what could be happening. At least that "Made in Australia" AZ is finding welcoming arms in other countries now.

Well let's hope the 77% figure wanting to vaccinate is accurate and that a few incentives may get us over the 80% mark.
Today we passed 12 million doses given.
So if the target population is 20 million then 80% is 16million.So 32 million doses needed. If we continue at 1 million doses a week we would get to 80% the week before Christmas.
