Sydney business class rage over Qantas delay

By Larissa coughmings

A QANTAS international flight has been delayed for almost 24 hours due to mechanical problems.
Angry business class passengers on the Singapore-bound flight QF31 had to be subdued by airport police officers this afternoon after they became abusive towards airline staff.

The flight, which is code-shared with Air Malta's KM2031 and British Airways flight BA7371, was scheduled to leave Sydney at 4.55pm yesterday.

The Qantas website lists the departure time as 4.30pm today - almost 24 hours later.

It is understood passengers were given hotel accommodation overnight by Qantas.

Australian Federal Police officers at the airport were called to the Qantas Club lounge during the afternoon after passengers began swearing at staff over the delay.

"It was in relation to some harsh words that were being said,'' an AFP spokeswoman said.

"When our officers arrived the situation had been defused.''

Steve Re of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association confirmed the flight had experienced technical problems last night before taking off.

He said passengers were asked to disembark so engineers could fix the problem.

After returning to the airport this morning for a 10.30am departure, passengers were advised of a further delay.

A Sydney Airport spokesman said passengers were still waiting at the departure gate to board the plane at 4pm.

What and economy passengers don't get angry?

Very poor form from the pax who were abusive towards the Qantas staff.

Kick them off the plane and make them swim, walk, paddle or fly another carrier to Singapore.

Absolutely. It's not the staff's fault!
And being abusive isn't going to make the plane fly!

... wouldn't we all like to fly an aircraft that was late BUT fully serviceable rather than one held together by staples or smoke and mirrors :!:

Then again, I recall being stuck in the terminal for a couple of hours due to a "major technical malfunction". Turned out that 2 of the attendant call buttons weren't functioning.

Not what I would have called a major malfunction...

They don't even work on QF when they are functioning. ROFL, sorry I couldn't resist.

One wonders if there will be a few memberships cancelled with resultant loss of points, SCs etc?

The pitfall of being abusive in the QC is that they DO know who you are!

Darn, what were Qantas thinking! That flight could have easily made it to SIN without aviation guidance systems and 3 engines...

Shame on you QANTAS putting safety first...

As anyone on this forum knows, the last thing a sensible person would do is raise their voice or make threats at an airport. On the other hand, this is a report from The Daily Telegraph so there is likely to be some exaggeration in order to grab the attention of/appeal to the demographic targetted by this paper; MelUser has already pointed out the problem with the angle taken by the page sub who wrote the headline.

We don't know the full story (you rarely get that in the Tele) - the QF staff member(s) concerned may have been very quick to push the panic button too...

A little back ground.

All aircraft have whats called an "MEL" (not Melbourne ) which is Minimum Equipment List that is dictated by the manufacturer and the FAA (in Boeings case) and in most cases CASA will just follow on. Within this list there are some minor (acceptable) items, some items that must be fixed within a certain time (or number of flying hours) and others that must be fixed before further flight.

Sometimes these are over or under protective so airlines may also make their version the list more stringent but not lower any limits.

It's just possible that whilst a call button may not be an issue by itself there may be a requirement that adjacent call buttons cannot be unserviceable. ..... or some other combination.

I hope that makes sense. ;)

QF seems to be having a rough trot, wonder what happened to the upset JQ pax or perhaps that sort of thing with JQ is now standard:

This information is for the following passengers who were scheduled to depart:
  • • Bangkok to Melbourne on Jetstar and Code share flights on the 02 June 2008, flight JQ30 departing at 2100 (9:00pm local time).
  • • Melbourne to Denpasar on Jetstar and Code share flights on the 3rd June 2008, flight JQ35 departing at 18:45 local time
  • • Denpasar to Melbourne on Jetstar and Code share flights on the 3rd June 2008, flight JQ36 departing at 2350 (11:50pm local time)
We regret to advise that your flights have been delayed due to an unserviceable aircraft. There is no greater priority than safety and security at Jetstar.

I just can not imagine needing to be restrained by police due to anger over a delayed flight. The only reason would be if I had been served excessive alcomohol and was out of control - personally not an issue as excessive alcomohol + sim = sleep rather than anger.

Though not an excuse, booze might have something to do with it?

Otherwise... totally impotent, pointless and misdirected rage IMO.

Reminds me of the angry scenes at the LHR T1 BA Flounge reception when there were delays due to 1 runway shut down after the BA 777 crash landing. Though in that instance I'm glad that I wasn't witness to anything overly abusive and certainly no police were called. Still unpleasant no doubt, both for the poor staffers and others within earshot.

Reminds me of tonights news in Melbourne. A really upset passenger who was angry at QF over the delays this morning. ... caused by the Fog :!:

Reminds me of tonights news in Melbourne. A really upset passenger who was angry at QF over the delays this morning. ... caused by the Fog :!:

The news I saw (no online links I can find at the moment) had a bunch of unhappy passengers, but understanding of the fact that airlines can't control fog.

The cause of their unhappiness was twofold:

1) lack of communication from airline(s) and...

2) that a planeload of diverted (QF) PER-MEL pax were confined to their plane on the tarmac for 7 hours at ADL (total trip length 14 hours). I'd be a little disappointed at that!

Wot - no mention here of any currently ongoing industrial action?

Or has the fog confused the issues ...

Same here - keep plying me with alcohol, and I will find a corner to curl up in and wait to be woken to board.

But then, I am generally flying long-haul en route to a tournament, and usually have a few days up my sleeve, so delays like this won't be an issue, domestically, I always allow a few extra hours, LH, a few days.

2) that a planeload of diverted (QF) PER-MEL pax were confined to their plane on the tarmac for 7 hours at ADL (total trip length 14 hours). I'd be a little disappointed at that!

A few years ago, my LHR/SIN/MEL tried landing in MEL a couple of times and finally aborted and pointed west landing an hour later in ADL. Fog was the problem and from memory it was late JAN, early FEB...

We sat in the plane for many hours before we we let off into a transit lounge. The problems we faced were...
Another aircraft was parked behind us and was refueld first, then the refueling truck broke down followed by a power outage in ADL followed by our SIN flight crew being over their flying limits!

Customs (not Qantas) would not let anyone clear in ADL even though there were PAX traveling onto ADL (they later relented on this) and we were held in limbo for over 10 hours from memory.

Only premium customers were allowed into the QC as well and that rearly got up the noses of QC members and Gold FF's.

In all, I got home approx 13 hours late. Oh yeah, also, mobile phones were not allowed to be switched on (Qantas). I finally said screw you and turned my phone on and told my wife the situation. She had been waiting for me at MEL for 3 hours by then and the arrivals board still indicated the ETA as being an hour or so away.

That's my ADL horror story!

Mr!
