EK yesterday provider was OnAir - $1 for 100MB - again was so disgracefully slow that crew had to reboot / reset / reboot continually - I just gave up in the end as it was again unusable. Again crew are copping all the flack for this and wasting so much time on it.

So 2 questions:
1. Has anybody ever really truly and seriously connected to WiFi on any airline and found the speed acceptable?
2. If it is so difficult - why do airlines continue to offer a service that just does not work?

I did take a screen shot yesterday of the $1 service on EK and will be sending that off to SQ to stick a rocket up them - mind you $1 for a 100MB that takes a month to reach the limit is about what it is worth IMHO.

I don't even know why they bother to charge $1? I mean, people are paying $x,xx_+ anyway. Our speeds were terrible too - took forever uploading 5-6 photos onto FB whilst in the air. What car did you get at FRA / MEL ?

We use our own limo service when we arrive in London so it is a BMW or Mercedes that we book separately from SQ. Tends to be about £60 to go from Heathrow to Canary Wharf. It is about £50 or a bit less to get dropped off at Heathrow.

Used EY from BNE on the 787 last week. They had a free promotion for J and above. Speed was OK to browse a basic webpage. Still when you can be doing other things on a plane at normal grounds speeds, such as drink, eat, read, watch etc I would prefer those things

I've heard it's a demand management thing. So that you don't have everyone connecting just for the hell of it as that would make am already slow connection even slower.

Just a price signal to try and manage the performance.

AA domestically in the States isn't too bad. Managed to watch my flight on flightaware, send emails. change seats for my next flight, and post on AFF.

Gday

Free wifi in JAL First class SYD- NRT on 777-300ER earlier this year was ok from a functionality point of view. But unless i needed to stream a live sporting event it isnt much use and the speed is nowhere near good enough for this. Could browse etc fine but i was having way more fun enjoying the food drinks service etc to be stuffing around on the net. Must be noted that it wasnt operational until we left Australia, so the first three hours or so. I guess the primary use for it would be for business travelers who want to work and stay connected in the air.

Pele.

Wifi works very well on JL F, other airlines should learn from them how to provide this service. I managed to write TR, upload plenty photos and use Skype onboard.

Is there anybody in the house who actually does know why a fast reliable internet service cannot be provided when pax stump up with hard earned readies for such a service?

Like 50 years ago the Yanks tried to sell us this pup that they put men on the moon when computers basically didn't exist - and they showed pictures to try to substantiate these claims. Now they reckon that have visited mars with computers streaming the whole time - yet we cannot get a reliable WiFi service in aeroplanes that fly just above Aaron Sandilands head height? Something doers not compute here! :D

I think maybe have a look at how much money was allocated to the moon/mars flights vs wifi on airlines and you might find your answer!

Yep wifi on JAL F worked perfectly... although as I recall, not until we left Australian airspace. Or does it work right away now?
