So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

you would think but it’s been nearly 2 weeks and NRMA is still counting the beans. Likely also they can’t recover blood out of a stone because the other party is uninsured.

the salvage value alone is prob $20k in parts. So it’s a no brainer for me.

Yes the Europeans have been very slack (greedy) in sticking to three year warranties. Kia is now 7.

If modern machinery lasts for 3 years, it should generally last for at least 5-7 so the Europeans won’t lose a lot if their quality remains high.

I have 2 cars (RR silver spirit & MGB) which are 33 and 53 years old respectively, and as my daily driver a 9 year old SUV.
The Mazda SUV has been slowly disintegrating over the last couple of years, parts are coughpy and seriously expensive. Yet my old cars have durable components and are more easy to repair . I’m not actually speaking about the mechanics of the car here, the drivers side sun visor in the CX-9 has failed, it will cost $360.00 to replace.
The passenger side mirror has a faulty electric motor (probably some issue with software) and won’t realign after using reverse to park. This can’t be repaired, it must be replaced at a cost (plus labour) north of $500.00. Just yesterday I went to get something from the glove compartment and that is now failing too.
Now my RR spirit while a quality built motor in 1987 is using technology from 30 years ago, and it still functions perfectly today .
I accept that cost is important when buying a car, but this throwaway world where after 5-10 years the vehicle starts to fall apart requiring excessively expensive parts to keep it going is not IMHO an improvement.

My Landcruiser 200 is a non DPF diesel. Current lC200 all have DPF.

The instant asset write off of $150K is attractive and would mean that that 7 year old can be swopped for a brand new one - essentially a cash neutral position.
But I baulk because of the DPF.

20 or so years ago a mechanic friend told me that the time of buying good 5 year old cars will come to an end. Instead we will be buying new cars and ditching them in 5 years as they become too expensive to maintain.
He probably said this too early but perhaps he makes a good point.

Finally picked up new (to me) wheels - a Mazda CX5. Gosh, I love it so much already. I can see why it's so popular.

Off to spend some more money on that instant asset write off....

Used 2013 LC200Sahara diesel 110000km.
Redbook private sale $75000

Brand new 2020 LC200Sahara diesel
$120000

Instant asset writeoff $150000 assuming its legislated.

GST say $15000
$105000 immediate 100% depreciation at marginal tax rate

Effectively a cash neutral transaction swoping new for old.

Is your MBG like this one and I must say what a strapping lad is standing next to it. It is a 72 flow throughScreen Shot 2020-03-01 at 9.11.45 pm.jpeg.
My daily driver is a 9-10 year dual cab ute (diesel) with all the ARB bongos added and tradie white in colour.

Whats a good online place to privately sell a car?

Facebook Marketplace
Gumtree
Carsales

Free ad or paid ad??
I have used carsale paid ads in the past. Just be mindful of the scammers: "I am buying the car for my daughter. Give me your bank details and I will send you the money and a friend will pick it up".
