Six million people a year would use train to Melbourne Airport

The train station will be close to fifty years old at the airport before it sees its first train.

I've been on Skybus when it's taken more than 50 minutes to get from Tulla Apt to its Spencer Street terminus. This happens often enough during morning peak hours on weekdays.

While I haven't experienced it more than once, there can apparently also be delays a kilometre or two from the freeway turnoff into the airport, because so many motorists are trying to get into the car parks or taxis and other dropoff vehicles are trying to access the terminals. This will only get worse as passenger numbers gradually climb, even if we have economic downturns sometimes.

?? There is a train station at the airport?

I think there is spot at MEL reserved for a train station (many years ago), however because of political waffling it has never been utilised.
markis10 I tried finding the spot, have you got a map (or similar) that shows it location.

There are 2 platforms at Southern Cross reserved for an airport train that were built when the station was redeveloped. I believe there are also facilities (or at least space for) for a city check-in service like Hong Kong.

I think this quote says enough about the vested interests preventing a rail link to MEL.

An airport rail line made ''perfect sense'' and should be built, Public Transport Users Association president Daniel Bowen said.
But powerful industry lobbies - including taxi, bus and airport companies - say it is not needed.
The government has sided with these groups, arguing the SkyBus from Southern Cross - which takes 20-30 minutes - is good enough.
SkyBus managing director Simon Cowen said there was no pressing need for the rail line. ''[A bus] is going to be a viable option for a long time to come.''
Victoria Taxi Association policy officer David Samuel said congestion was not yet bad enough to warrant a rail line.
''We wouldn't say that a rail link is necessary. It [the airport] is such a valuable, easy earner for taxi drivers, they are always going to be inclined to want to go there,'' Mr Samuel said.
Also keen to see a rail line deferred is Melbourne Airport, which last financial year earned $90 million from parking. Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff recently said that it did ''not make economic sense to have a rail link''.

So have I, but in reality that's a rarity - expect 35 minutes maybe 8:30am-10:00am week days and as little as 15  on the odd occasion.

The company does employ their radios and effectively.

When delays such as this occur, expect the bus to take the 2 or 3 year old "freight" entry or even Melrose drive. I have experienced both.

I have also been taken south down Pasco Vale road when there was appanely an accident somewhere.

I think I own about 25mm of the road to Tullamarine so I am ok about you leaving the train idea alone while I dress up as "the troll". Six million blips less per year would be a concern.

Don't fear. road transport is ingrained into Australian culture.
Q: "Do you support the development of public transport"
A: "Yes, it will make my drive easier"
