I can't agree more with this!! It's like the people that as soon as the wheels touch the ground they whip their phones out!

I do this (as well) when getting into SYD to check the train timetable. ;)

Also to facebook check in at the holiday inn to get 50 PC points ;) ;)

Well I do this too (after the all-clear announcement), but it's discreet and just to SMS a pick-up person (or to check E/F for any "seat changes" on next onward flight ;)).

I would never make a call until inside the terminal though.

I see so many people do it while the plane is still slowing down...

I don't usually turn my phone off when flying, so when I'm on final my emails start going thru. Gives me a chance to get some read/reply if need be. I wouldn't even consider taking a call until well within the terminal.

(Now, before you yell at me for not turning off my phone, ask any cabin crew in-flight to show you their phone, I can guarantee its on. Most airline staff don't turn them off. The real reason for no electronic devices, is so that if there is an evacuation or emergency you can hear the cabin crew. Not talking on your phone, or earphones in.)

I know Cabin Crew usually say something like "as we've now turned off the active runway, if your phone is within reach you may now turn it on". Guess they figure if there is an evacuation it won't happen between this point & arrival at the terminal.

If you think people who turn on phones at the end of the flight is annoying spare a thought what it would be like if you had airphones like they do in the US. Murphy's Law would dictate that the loudest most obnoxious person would also have an unlimited budget for the call costs!

SWMBO asked me to share our situation with you. Four of us including 2 kids currently sitting in the J lounge in Brisbane. Our children are absolutely silent. Sitting here entertaining themselves, reading and just sitting waiting patiently.

Next table over "there is an arrogant business man in his pinstriped suit, loudly sharing his phone conversation with the whole lounge". If you want peace and quiet, she says to ban the men in pinstriped suits.

Tell SWMBO that she needs to get her own moniker so she can post. She sounds like a gal who doesn't mind giving her 2c worth on things!

I keep my iPhone in 'Flight Mode' all the way through, safe and saves battery life. It stays with me during the flight as it's my MP3 player. As soon as we land and the PA says we can switch the phone on, I hit the switch and, well, nothing happens because I am with Vodafail and their coverage on the tarmac at Sydney is appalling!

Honestly it sometimes takes until I am in the terminal for the network to lock on. And before you ask why I don't leave Voda, I am locked into a bl**dy contract for the next 6 months, but then I am getting out quick smart.

Guilty as charged! :-|

I normally switch on my Blackberry to check my email, confirm my car rental details and/or text whoever might be picking me up. I wouldn't make a phone call though, it would be quite embarrassing given the number of people around and the enclosed environment.

Sorry Liam but you are wrong here. Mobile phones can cause issues and should should be off until told to turn them on. There has been debate in the past on it and while there is the possibility of interference then they should be off when told so. Thinking you know better does not make it right. I've also yet to see cabin crew with their phones at all let alone on. Have you seen them with them on? Are they in flight mode as well?

A mobile phone left on will continue to hunt for a signal and as a downside will flatten your battery much faster. It will also be using maximum signal power to look for a station.

My twins (14 months) always travel with me in F with their nanny when traveling internationally without their mother. When Mum is there, the nanny still travels in F so she can assist with comforting the twins, if necessary. WE try our best; sorry to others.

BowTieGuy - you, wife, kids and 'nanny' all travel in F? No disrespect at all, kudos to you, but must be nice to be some people! I've had to slowly claw my way to WP/LTS through a bunch of J and many (too many!) Y+ flights. :(

My twins are usually well behaved but I've had my experiences when they're crying. Thankfully, it's always been when we're landing (and their ears are playing up). Thankfully, other pax have been understanding. For whatever reason taking off never seems to bother either of them. WTF?

Changes in the air pressure when descending are more noticeable as the pressure increases. And children don't know how to relieve the pressure. Take off is more noise then discomfort too.

Sorry that after reading this you feel the need to apologise. If anyone wants to whinge about a child genuinely crying in discomfort (as opposed to behaving like a cough but coughish behaviour isn't limited by age) then the problem is theirs and not yours.

Sucking a bottle on descent worked well with our little one. I believe as they get older that a Lollipop of some description is a good idea (never tried it, I've just been told it works).

The solution is simple. Have rules regarding noise, behaviour, etc in business class, and make parents responsible for their kids. Child (or adult) makes a persitent nusance of themselves >>> child and parent forefit their business class seats without refund and gets relegated to economy. Do the same in economy and forefit the return trip/receive a fine. Set these rules and lets see how many parents still let their kids run amuck.

:D She really only likes sharing her 2 cents when it involves correcting me, telling me I'm wrong or telling me what to do or not to do. :D Otherwise, she doesn't feel the need to share her thoughts, because it doesn't affect her if people do something different (and v.v.) in fact, she is sure that everyone here hates me because I'm too opinionated. (of course, I'm too stupid to realize if people hate me and I don't really care anyway = supercilious )

Basically she is very clever and I'm really lucky. I'll pass on the suggestion.

Sounds like the perfect relationship! The man knows his place and SWMBO is always right!! :)

I understand this only too well. :)

OT:

Two words for the secret of a long-lasting relationship.... "Yes Dear" ;)
More words to smooth the long lasting reationship:
"No Dear, your Dress/Butt/anything-else look fine" ...

As for kids and ears, mini serfty suffered this. On descent one would thing she was dying from the amount of noise; however the amazing thing was that after landing you thing nothing had ever happened ... "daddy, I want to go back on the aeroplane" :)
