Should I get an Ipad?

So what do people think about a proper case for the iPad - like not a big leather compendium thingy - but I see a lot of people with a back "shell" type thing?

Or do most not bother?

I use the smart covers - they work very well. The back of ipad2 did get a little scratched but not too bad. The key advantage for me is that you can remove them easily. So if I am on the train and holding the iPad for the entire time it makes it lighter and smaller to carry.

I bought one that you spray a liquid on and it takes 24 hours to set (much like car window tinting). It's excellent. Lifetime guarantee too.

Can I ask which one you bought?

I'm looking at passing my iPad 2 down to the kids, and I think that is going to require some form of protection for the screen.

Thanks Simon.

I have a leather one with a small keyboard inside the cover, and a stand, which makes it like a mini laptop. To be honest, I have never used the KB. But it gives it really good protection. And it gets thrown into my wifes bag a lot, so it needs some superior protection.

It's this one I think:

ZAGG | invisibleSHIELD | iPhone, iPod Cases, Screen Protectors, Covers, Shields, Skins

Bought from the Apple store. The only one they had which has the spray-on liquid.

I have a Power Support screen protector on my iPad and iPhone (iPhone also has one on the back too). They are easy to put on with no bubbles and have been on since day 1 (iPad 1 and iPhone 4 both bought on launch day).

Ok. So what software do you use to convert your videos to iPad format??

Most of the video that goes onto my iPad is recorded using EyeTV on my Mini. Usually this is rugby union games, Queensland reds. I convert them to mpeg using the in built Eyetv convertor. I use that format because I also share the games with my brother in Munich using Dropbox, and it provides an ok trade off between size and working on his non -apple technology. The files are roughly the same size as the iPad convertor in eyetv produces.

For DVD I use a combination of DVD shrink and Handbrake. For example I currently have Around the world in 80 treasures on the iPad much easier to carry than the DVDs.

I actually use "o player HD" for non-mp4 format so no conversion required.

Sorry I should have stated from AVI (or DVD I guess..... But I can get it to AVI).

I guess I need to check out this Handbrake business....

Thanks guys - I knew you'd have the answer :)

BTW - back on topic - yes you should! Only problem is I've lent it to my mum for her upcoming trip to Melbourne and I'm a little concerned that I won't get it back ;)

I use AVPlayerHD on my iPad so there is no need to convert AVI's. There are a few apps that will play AVI's, much better than messing around converting files.

I swear by AVplayerHD it works so well with nearly any video format and as tony said no conversion, just FTP or http upload the videos (or via iTunes file copy)

Love it Paddy - I always wonder what all these grown men used to play with before iPad came along?

Has anyone passing through MEL arrivals noticed if they are selling the new iPad at First Duty Free?

I'm sure they have it in departures (stock permitting) but there doesn't seem to be any way to preorder it for collection prior to arrival.

I was keen to buy one for home and work use. But then I learned that iPads don't run Word properly, in particular do not support the track changes feature which is essential for my work, so I dropped the idea. When Microsoft finally get around to producing Windows 8 tablets that run all the Office software correctly then I will probably buy one of those.

Those are looking good! Not so sure about Windows 8 on a normal laptop/desktop though.

If you have an apple Tv too then air video is a great way of streaming things to your TV. The iPad/iPhone works as a bridge from your hard drive (requires a Mac and an app installed on the Mac) to the apple TV.
