Should I get an Ipad?

I use AVPlayerHD on my iPad so there is no need to convert AVI's. There are a few apps that will play AVI's, much better than messing around converting files.

I swear by AVplayerHD it works so well with nearly any video format and as tony said no conversion, just FTP or http upload the videos (or via iTunes file copy)

Agree totally with both these posts. I never use iTunes for video. I'm yet to have a file that AVPlayer HD Can't handle. Well worth the few bucks to save the heartache (and to install the videos once the App is on, plug in your iDevice, go to the 'Apps' tabs for it in iTunes and scroll down, you'll notice AVPlayerHD and you can add your videos in there).

Just remembered this video stuff. Is there supposed to be some problem playing AVI on iPad. Because I got one on mine that's plays without any extra app.

Edit: it was recorded with a canon point and shoot camera and transferred direct to the iPad.

Some AVI files don't "just work" for some reason (usually the high res/larger files). Most work fine though. Also, it's beneficial to re-encode files that are higher resolution to conserve space.

This may be a very stupid question but... Does the iPad 1 play HD video? Lots of my movies are in HD format and would seem a waste if they didn't play it. Not looking to spend much as it's really only to be used on flights where AVOD isn't that great.

This may be a bit technical, but...

So today I was given an iPad 1 by my father as he has upgraded to the latest.

However I obviously want to format/register with my itunes account but also backup his photos. What's the best way of going about this?

I notice he has the AFF app too.. *waves* :D

Throw it into DFU mode and then restore on your iTunes.

DFU Mode for Dummies

How do you activate DFU mode?
In order to put your device into DFU mode, with the iPad connected to your computer and turned off, you must press the "home" and "power" buttons together for EXACTLY 10 seconds at which point you must release "power" but continue to hold "home". After about 15 seconds, the device will enter DFU mode.

There is no way to tell from the screen that this has happened as it will remain blank. If you see the Apple logo, the "connect to iTunes" graphic, or anything but a blank screen, you got the timing wrong. You can just try again until you get it right. It is perfectly normal for the iPad to reset just before the 7 second mark. Do not be put off by this. The timing of your button release must be exactly 10 seconds. It is best not to even look at the screen! You may like to try using your watch or a clock to get the timing precise. Hold both buttons, count to 10 seconds exactly, release the power button but keep holding home. Simple!

I find the easiest way is to count 'one thousand, two thousand, three thousand...' etc, ensuring you get the timing right. You will see a pop up message on iTunes saying 'iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode'. When you see that you're good to go:)

Enjoy:)

Why do you want to reformat it?

Just change the iTunes ID and delete any apps/data you don't want.

Always best to nuke it and blow it away starting fresh. I do with any device, iPad, iPhone, laptop, anything.
