Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone would know the shortest commercial route operated by an airline, anywhere in the world.

This will help solve an argument and short of checking every airlines route map I have no other way of finding out.

Thanks.

Thanks for that.

A 2 minute flight:?: Meal service would need to be very quick.

Who would want to fly a mere 11 miles by the crow? That's what a car is for.

OK....this is AFF isn't it? :D

As for within Australia, my nomination goes to GLT-ROK. 57 mi, which is almost as close as BNE-OOL, except the latter can't be flown, you need to drive it (which can be hell on earth once you hit the traffic in the Gold Coast proper).

I flew GLT-ROK as part of the QLD coastal milk run in May. The flight was a mere 25 minutes and there was no inflight service (and the FAs specifically told us this).

My nomination is BLT-EMD which is 40 miles (I did once as part of BNE-BLT-EMD). According to QF timetable still runs on Fridays.

What would be interesting - not too hard to justify crossing a pond in prop - what is the shortest commercial jet flight, and shortest widebody jet flight? HKG-CAN?

I'm pretty sure that the Emerald to Blackwater route was considered so short that it was excluded from points earning for years.... until the revamp of the QF FF program (about 2001?) when it suddenly started to earn 1000 points due to the 1000 pt minimum.

In the Star Alliance timetable I stumbled across a daily 26 mile flight from Martha's Vineyard (MVY) to Hyannis (HYA).

One route that I flew with Ryanair early this year was their shortest route across their network which was Glasgow Prestwick to Belfast City. Flight time was just 17 mins. And yes they did the full service run also, seat-belt sign remained on for the entire flight.

It's still a $90 flight though, there are a few cheaper ones you could take for points :p

Interestingly, QF suggests a refreshment is served, on a 20min flight.

Previously qantaslink PQQ to SYD had stop at TRO, apparently 47km flight.

GLT-ROK doesn't offer so much as a boiled sweet.

In fact, we didn't even see the seat belt sign turn off.

Nor on BLT-EMD (not that would expect anything). 20mins is from "gate" to "gate", so including taxi-ing time (at least 5 mins), really only leaves 10-15mins in the air ....

Another similar route used to be NAA-MRZ (57 miles) . But this sector is no longer.

The worlds shortest flight

Blink and you'll miss it: World's shortest flight | News.com.au

Scottish airline Loganair triumphed in the battle for the route, between Westray and Papa Westray, Scotland.
With a distance of approximately 2.8 kilometres between the airports, the flight duration usually lasts less than two minutes, but depending on the wind direction can be much quicker.

Gee this is shorter than a good number of runways.

Re: The worlds shortest flight

Just researching 2014 trips and we will be visiting Tinian. That Island when the USA took over had 6 2700M runways. It was where the Enola Gay and bockscar took off carrying Little Boy and Fat man.

Re: The worlds shortest flight

Here is a youtube video of the complete flight from take-off run to landing - World's Shortest Flight: Westray to Papa Westray - YouTube . Clocks in at 2:32 in the video. Reading the comments, the flight is actually part of a triangle - Kirkwall to Westray to Papa Westray to Kirkwall, thereby linking both Westray and Papa Westray to Kirkwall.

There is also a ferry joining the two that is cheaper.

What would the cruising altitude be for this flight?
