Hi, hoping that experienced fliers can provide some guidance on seat selection. We're flying Perth-Sydney on QF568 then Sydney-Santiago on QF27 in two weeks. We have business class upgrades requested, but currently ticketed for economy on the domestic leg and premium economy on the international leg.

Obviously we hope the J upgrades come off but in the meantime want to select the best seats we can. Any tips? Currently we are in 37J and 37K for the premium economy international leg and 31A and 31B for the domestic economy leg. We might be able to move about a bit if we've made obvious bad choices! (although looking again at the seating chart it already looks like slim pickings - we're getting pretty close)

Also, any guesses as to the likelihoods of getting the J upgrades? We requested them well in advance (ca. 12 mths ago) and I'm SG, for whatever that's worth

Cheers, Mike.

There are a few variations in the 747-400s, so worth having a look at the various seat maps (try The QANTAS Source |).

The PE seats are fairly similar, although window variations and number of seats varies between aircraft. We had 36AB on a recent flight, and had a mis-aligned window. Not that it mattered particularly. The PE seats lean back further than Y, and that means that the person behind is likely to grab the back of your seat as they climb out. The back row seats avoid this, but you get the noise and distractions of toilets and bassinet rows in the Y cabin behind. But a two seater such as those you chose on the side can be good for a couple if you like a little more privacy.

If you post the dates I could check the loadings on Expert Flyer.

We prefer A/B or J/K when we travel as a couple. They are very fond of pulling the window shades down so if there is a misaligned window it is not a big deal IMO.
We have not had much success in the upgrade lottery on this route - once I think and that was when QF flew into Buenos Aires. We are lowly Gold though.
We found PE fine despite the disappointment of no J upgrade.

Hi All,

Flying on this version of the 747 in a few months, whilst I've flown in PE on the 747 many times i've always sat in JK, this time only 35,36 AB are available, from seatguru both 35 and 36 AB look the same, any preference on these 2 rows?
