As I have said, I haven't flown international for 15 years so have no status! But I am abit confused about seat pre allocation- if someone patient could explain that woud be great.
Alot of you seem to be able to preselect seats months in advance or be preallocated seats without necessarily choosing them- and are able to find a seat map of your flight indicating which seats are taken. Is that a status priveledge, a clever IT priveledge- or just can't I find it. I am flying QF 93 next week (so disappointed to miss out on an A380) and had a look at preselection (economy) on the qantas site and they are offering me one of about 5 (middle) seats and 1 aisle.
Some explaination would be much appreciated.
Thanks

To be more precise, Qantas Frequent Flyer Silver (PS) can select seating.

Gold (SG) get better options than Silver and Platinum (WP) better than Gold.

Other than status giving you the option of preselecting seats at any time, without status you can select seats on international flights up to 7 days before you start them, and if they include domestic flights as part of the booking, those seats can be selected too. That’s why you have the option now.

Even without status you can ring Qantas as soon as you have made a booking and request seat allocation. Unfortunately you can't see it online. However if you go to Expedia.com.au you can see available seats for your flight (or any other for that matter)

grussellt - this is interesting, thanks for the tip

if you go to Expedia.com.au you can see available seats for your flight

but - Where on the site can you see this? And how? Do you have to log in first?

thanks- didn't know that. I couldn't find it on expedia- is it only if your book through them? I was logged in

If you have your Qantas Booking reference you could try www.checkmytrip.com. Bring this up and enter your booking reference and surname.

When the booking display comes up look for little +'s with orange background. Click these and you may see a seat number beside "Seating" if a seat is allocated.

If there is a seat number, click on that and a pop up window will appear; showing a seat map if available.

After the price list comes up with details of flight you should be able to see on the left hand side of each flight offer a spot that says "preview seat availability" & simply click on that. No need to be logged in.
