SCs to be earned on Velocity Reward bookings (6mo promotion) [AusBT]

Nice promo. Granted, there is a bit of a cash premium difference between Reward seats and the cheapest Any Seat award seat, so this promo allows one to escape that small "premium" (or larger one if the cheapest Any Seat award seats are gone).

There was a commenter on the AusBT article who mentioned that this isn't new since Qantas have done it for a while, then the follow up I had to laugh a tiny bit. Didn't have the heart (or an account) to remark that QF ASAs can be had at Classic Award levels (with usually again a small premium on top of the normal co-pay when booking a Classic Award).

I guess we'll be waiting for the email to come out after Sabre transition.

What will be interesting - will you get points as well? The article does not mention points (it does mention status credits). Many of us would like to think that points will be awarded (a little "rebate" on the expense), but then how would you calculate the points anyway? If you pay more cash (i.e. use less points), do you get more points back (and, if you pay it all in points, do you get no points earned)? (Unless VA switch from a cost-based points calculation to a distance-based one).

I'd still be alright if only status credits were awarded but no points.

Now to work out what would be the most economical points outlay to get Platinum :)

Reward on VA = SC only
ASA = Points + SC

All SC earn will be per flight segment.

bring on the SC runs!

How do you find the booking class of an award seating without actually booking it? What class are Reward Business seats?

I'd be inclined to think that it will only be status credits being awarded.

I was looking at booking a Biz fare to LAX with points in May. This would seal the deal IF the Reward seat at 96000 points + $450 attracts the SCs
If it's any seat award only then the points cost becomes prohibitive for me :(

Earn Points and Status Credits on Any Seat redemptions with Virgin Australia
From 13 January 2013, members will earn Velocity points, status credits and eligible sectors when they redeem for an
‘Any Seat’ with Virgin Australia. This will count towards maintaining or upgrading a member’s status.

For reward seats during the promo period it's only SCs.

Regarding the earning of SCs on points upgraded fares this was Virgin's response on Twitter:
"Business seats that are upgraded from flexi seats will continue to earn flexi points."

I assume from that they mean status credits not points - but we've seen Virgin get these things wrong in the past :)

100 SC for 13800pts + $22, nice!

Without wanting to be intentionally depressing about this - I could easily see points rates for redemptions being "enhanced", starting from the 14th of January (especially so for journeys requiring multiple sectors) - so I'm containing my excitement for now. :-|

Even doubling that you would still have a pretty good SC earn when looking at the total cost of hitting a status level with each airline.

Reading between the lines I got the impression VA didn't want people hoarding points - so increasing the level required to redeem them won't change that situation. If they've got spare capacity they might as well use it (for redemptions) and if people want to fly on a particular date but can't then more flexis or more expensive (as in not the regular cheap price) savers might be sold.

Interesting - so with the new business class being Z.

If I book two regular flexi's, and upgrade them with points to business - theoretically I should receive extra SC's for Business?

Keen to see how all this pans out... shame I now have the problem of too many status credits :( hahahaa. I need a p1 teir or something as discussed in another thread.

Hi everyone
First post! (exciting times)
I'm very new to all this, so I'm just looking for a bit of confirmation
I'm flying on a business reward fare (Z i think?) from SYD-MEL on 13 Jan. I booked roughly a week ago.
Based on what I've read, this should qualify for SC earn. Am I right in concluding this?

I don't think so - it says clearly somewhere that tickets need to be booked after 12 Jan

You may get lucky though?

Yeah, just re-read the article. I think I let my enthusiasm get in the way of what is pretty basic reading comprehension.

Thanks though
