Rumour has it & Qantas [778 non-stop London from Sydney]

Clearly the economics don't work, otherwise it would have been done by now and SQ would be switching out of a 345 into a 777LR if it were a run away success, instead of scraping their ultra long hauls altogether.

However until you try it don't knock it. In recent years I have done Singapore to New York or vv in business class non stop, via FRA and via HKG. In business class I would chose the non stop every single time if I could. It's amazing how quick the time passes and your sleep isn't interrupted by stops (which add a couple of hours to the trip and often occur at inconvenient times). Now in economy of course it would be a different matter! (Although I think I could survive it in an exit row)

The Asian and Perth flights are the trickiest to get a decent kip and it does not help when you slide down the angle flat seat and your clothing stays where it started. Therefore exposing bare skin.

The new business seats upgrade for Qantas A330's will apparently have certification to operate in recline mode on takeoff and landing. If this is true will be great to get to sleep earlier especially shorter overnight trips.

Think of those poor souls down the back who have to sleep in upright position in confined space?

I do

Used to be one. Looking at your profile you see the pointy end a lot more than aft.

Hardly. Most of my flying is economy although I do try and make that as comfortable as possible.

Revisiting this now called sunrise project by QF and right now 787-900 has started its tripping from Mel-Perth-LHR. I think this is good though the seat ( not pitch)squeeze is maybe a downer.

The same two teams have played the quarterfinal and semifinal.

Not much new in that article other than not to expect an announcement during QANs August results

The A350-900ULR variant is already flying with Singapore Airlines (SIA) on the world’s longest route between Singapore and New York, which measures 8,285nm on the Great Circle Mapper. But supposedly the A350-1000 variant is going to have better performance. The 777X is not flying -8X variant. Anybody care to discuss there flight experience on Singapore - Newark?

Lots of people have taken it. Even before when it was an A340.

It's LONG. But in business class it's IMO great. Not sure about premium economy.

The QF proposed project sunrise routes surely do need that better performance as they don’t have the advantage of the SIN-EWR route which typically doesn’t face strong winds (usually when travelling westbound) as it either continues in easterly direction around the globe or does EWR-SIN via polar route depending on prevailing conditions.

Agree, and LAX-SIN is even longer by flight time.

Actually LAX-SIN is ~1.5-2 hrs shorter than EWR-SIN, not terribly different in flight time to QF8 (DFW-SYD) or QF9 (PER-LHR). Have done LAX-SIN nonstop in Y+ and J, it was fine in Y+. Preferableto having mid flight inconvenience of disembarking, carting bags around and security.

If you look at travel times, its SQ22>SQ21>QR921>QF 8/9, SQ37.

If we are talking about routes, we forget about QR921 AKL-DOH, which I think is the longest route with poor suffering economy passengers, complete with 10 across on a 777!

Just did a PER-SYD in Seat 30F on a 737. Same 17" seat width as the QF 787 , and it was a fast flight at 3.5 hours flight time. It was awful! Had a rather large person next to me, and I'm not small either - can't imagine a flight 5x longer.

Talk of a 779 with a hundred seat stripped out plus extra tanks as stop gap until 778 is ready

777X may still be used if the A350 has problems. But this may be well after C19 issues have calmed down. And more like Sydney direct to LHR or JFK.

This is a really good laugh. The 350 can do it now. Perhaps some payload/cabin juggles, but overall within it's capability. Boeing can't even make a light twin fly safely.

It is an ungraceful fall from quite a height.

Airbus took decades but they got there. Even the A350 itself is far more comfortable than the 787 as a passenger IMO.
